Custom ranks are generally awarded in contests and as a thank you for donating to the server fund. Pretty much disregard all the extra stuff Quackers linked because it was way too much for me to keep track of by myself in the absence of a full framework to do that stuff.

Kinda silly but the in-game rationale for both mega evolution (and the remake itself) in oras is that the games take place in an alternate universe to the original games without mega evolution.
