Room Camp 10-12 and SP takt op. Destiny 5 Spy×Family 5 Good Luck Girl! 8 Wishing you all a happy Mother's Day, Reitaisai, and the anniversary of Cornell '77. Tomorrow, I hope to finally start Musou Kakyou.

It says a lot about how few goodies/promos we've had lately that a lineup promo airing is worth talking about. Apparently, the Toonami staff have even less free time than James Rolfe. They didn't even alter the AssClass topical to say it's airing at 12:30 now. But yeah, I like it so, even if I could've done without the maybe transphobic clip from One Piece at the end. Reminds me of @mochi, wherever that dude is nowadays.

Oh, I don't doubt it would do well for Toonami. The nostalgia factor may be muted, but I'm sure there are a lot of old-school (err.. new-school? Weird to think, since the block has been around so long) Toonami and even [asa] fans who would come crawling back to see the end of Bleach. It would work better for us than it would Netflix. And as for ratings concerns, the modern era of Toonami (as in, the last two or three years) has had decreased expectations, so I don't think it would matter much.

Personally, I'm wondering if the return of Bleach is a big enough deal that Netflix would want dibs on it. It was a big franchise in its heyday, but the original anime ended over a decade ago. And consider all the people who love to say that the series was never good after the first arc, which might mute any nostalgia factor the new show has going for it. I guess we'll see what happens... and believe me, I want Toonami to get this one as much as the next guy. I think the real test for whether this block will be able to keep punching above its weight is the next season of MHA. Either Crunchyroll is going to get it and may or may not let Toonami have it, or the Japanese companies take Sketch's suggestion to heart. But at that point, will they have enough money in the budget to air it anyway?

General Content Ratings Thread 2.0: Same Principle, Different Format
Blatch replied to PokeNirvash's topic in Anime & Manga
Oh, don't worry about takt op., because while I may not be including it in this omnibus, it's still being watched at a decent rate. The same can't be said for WEP, though; contrary to a previous comment, it is on hiatus, not the least of which is due to its slow but painful slide in production quality, which culminated in a polarizing ending. At some point, once I finish steeling myself, I'll start it over, and I'll change a rating or two in the process... #6 (where I stopped, but also right before things went downhill) is another jersey foul: I don't know why I didn't give it a 14DV. And as for my sudden burst of activity, it has more to do with you watching and rating a lot more anime than I do, plus me wanting to get back for initially not posting in this thread for a year and a half. Good thing I've proven I'm actually capable of doing this at a solid clip. 😃 Now it's time to get down to business. This time, one show rules the roost, and it marks the first time I've ever achieved the dream of making images for a show the same day an episode came out. Hit it! Spy×Family Mission:1 - "OPERATION STRIX" - TV-14LV Mission:2 - "SECURE A WIFE" - TV-14DLV Mission:3 - "PREPARE FOR THE INTERVIEW" - TV-14LS Mission:4 - "THE PRESTIGIOUS SCHOOL'S INTERVIEW" - TV-PGV The iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls Episode 11: "Can you hear my voice from the heart?" - TV-PG (review post here) Hackadoll the Animation Episode 10: "Let's Go Out to a Hot Spring!" - TV-14SV Episode 11: "VA Police, Move Out!" - TV-PGV Nichijou Episode 25 - TV-PGLV Episode 26 - TV-PGV Room Camp Episodes 1 through 3: TV-G Episodes 4 through 6: TV-PG Good Luck Girl! Rounds 7: "Is This That So-called Boy-Raised-As-a-Girl Pattern?" and 7.5: "I'll Never Forget What You Did Today!!" - TV-14 Next time, the Cinderella Project festival approaches (and probably brings more melodrama with it), the Forgers find out if Anya got accepted to Eden College (except she totally did, because otherwise there wouldn't be a show), the saga of the Hackadolls ends in sublimely ridiculous fashion, Ichiko was apparently traumatized as a kid and we get to see all the juicy details, the OutClub works on finishing the Yamanashi Stamp Rally (in other words, that's the plot of Room Camp), and we take a trip to the mysterious and wonderful land known as Gensokyo, where there's sure to be a new incident to solve. Oh, and maybe I'll fit another show in there somewhere; doing at least three w/ images per omnibus is a tall task for me. -
Yeah, I wouldn't say there's no chance whatsoever of a S2 to this show, but Crunchyroll's aparent schism with Toonami means it won't happen soon. Maybe it'll resolve itself once the lawyers sort out the paperwork. And it's especially annoying since I was really intrigued by the finale. Ryo meeting his partner in justice was really satisfying, and I liked the integration of more mystical elements, such as Ryo placing the mirror in its right place, and the sword the Chinese girl is going to use that apparently represents the whole of her father. On the other hand, it's made this entire season feel like an extended prologue to the really good stuff. I wanna see these two characters duke it out with Lan Di! Too bad Shenmue III doesn't have that. And a bonus comment: finding out that the two mirrors hold the key to a massive treasure vault gave me Fena war flashbacks. Hopefully this franchise has better ideas for this plotline than that show did with the weird hunk of crystal.

Cool. I mean, you're probably already watching OP subbed, but in that case, you must be a big enough fan to want to double dip. If that's the case, then I think the newly-minted Warner Bros. Discovery is to blame. They probably suddenly slashed the budget to make up for... whatever. Same reason as TBS and TNT aren't making new scripted shows.

It all started about a month ago, when I was looking for new Binding of Isaac mods to download. I stumbled upon one that changed Dark Esau's sprites to that of Koishi Komeiji, a character I liked very much a good number of years ago, because I saw a bit of myself in her, but also because she's cute as a button. So I downloaded it, and before I knew it I was looking up fan art of hers on Danbooru. This rekindled my love for a franchise that basically served as my introduction to deep weeb-ery, back on 2014 when I was a sophomore in high school and didn't know better. Tumblr played a big role in it, as I ended up following a few people who blogged about the series, and one of them made weird images and videos like this that probably played a role in my brain becoming increasingly broken and prone to laughing at avant-garde shitposts over the years. Now, I was only deeply invested for a few games as they came out, but I found myself coming back to the series every so often, if only for the fan works. It just wasn't until recently that it blossomed into a full-on obsession, and right as I was about to take my love for iDOLM@STER to the next level by watching the IRL lives starring the seiyuus. So much for that crap. So what am I talking about, anyway? Oh yeah... the Touhou Project. Or as it's called in America, old hat. Now, how can I make this involve content ratings? There's no official Touhou anime, but there is a lot of fanime in varying levels of quality. But once you sift through all the Flash-animated IOSYS music videos, recreations of the openings to various anime, and... yes, even Cookie, there are only two major series with episodes long enough to potentially air on TV: Musou Kakyou: A Summer Day's Dream, and Fantasy Kaleidoscope ~The Memories of Phantasm~ (since everything's got to have two titles). Guess I'll start there. In an alternate universe, one of these showed up on Toonami for April Fools', maybe replacing Mind Game on that one night where they aired subbed content. But since our timeline is too lame for something like that to ever happen, coming soon, you will be seeing my thoughts about this franchise rendered in the only way I know how: snark, starting with the first episode of A Summer Day's Dream, since it has an original story and professional voice actresses. If it was good enough for Squid Girl, then it should be more than enough for this plucky indie franchise. And by the way: I've actually played the games (the ones from the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil to Phantasmagoria of Flower View, anyway). So while anyone can claim they like the franchise based on consuming anything (like porn), I figure I'll throw in a show of confidence.

It could be that we're in the twilight of this version of Toonami's existence, but I don't see it that way. It's not an original theory, but I think the block is only going to end when Jason says so. And why would he have any reason to? Action animation has been in [adult swim]'s blood since the very beginning. So long as they keep making new action shows, Toonami will be able to air them, and the block will have value. At this point, the question becomes if they'll be able to air anything else. It's also funny that you mention the TOM 4 era, because in my personal worst-case scenario, I see Toonami reverting to a two-hour block like it was in the dark ages, only instead of an hour of Naruto filler buoying the block, it's an hour of One Piece. They could lead off with any co-pros they're making, and then tack on a classic rerun at the end. Would you be willing to continue watching if it came to that?
-
I see. Hmm... at this point, my biggest hope is that this rerun is somehow temporary and they're waiting for the ink to dry on an upcoming contract, but the rest of your post didn't inspire confidence. And Primal S2 is probably going to become a Toonami original just so they have something to tide us over with until the next round of co-productions starts. In that case, I haven't seen any of this show, so I'll start with S1. If AMC really is preventing Sentai from licensing out to Toonami, then that's just galling, especially after Made in Abyss gave me newfound optimism regarding this block. I hope it's not true, if only because I've started to wonder what the future is going to be like, and things have gotten pretty existential. 🥴
-
Well, that's disappointing, but I think some internal politics we don't know about played a role in this. After the debacle of late last year with the block having to stall week after week because they couldn't get anything new, the Toonami crew now knows better and isn't going to test their luck. At least Primal S1 is only five episodes; whether a premiere of S2(?) or something new from Sentai follows it, I think we're on okay shape. Least I still gots Lupin to watch. I also find it interesting that they're having AssClass lead off the block and moving One Piece up, both of which Sketch suggested. Granted, the former is only for a week, which makes me wonder why Primal is suddenly going to knock it off. Lately Toonami has been prone to bursts of micromanagement like this, whereas in the past the block would try to stay consistent as possible to help keep the ratings stable. Guess we're a long ways away from that era now.
-
In my eyes, Fena started out nicely but turned into a joke by the end. Black Lotus had lower peaks, but was at least good the whole way through, and I probably would've liked it more had I been familiar with the Blade Runner mythos. But yeah, I don't think it's controversial at all to say that Shenmue has been the best of the CR originals. Ideally, it'll get a second season announced at the end of the finale on Saturday, meaning it'll outlive the brand it was originally made for.

Spy×Family 1-3 The iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls 11 Hackadoll the Animation 10/11 Nichijou 25 Wow, that was actually lots of fun. It helps that this show rates well: all three eps have been in the 14 range so far. I have no ETA for the next omnibus (as it'll depend on how much I want to include), but I can confidently say it's coming soon. And if you'd like a sneak peek at my images, go here. Trunks Thread 19.1: A New New Frontier
Blatch replied to PokeNirvash's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Poor Shimabukuro... he can't seem to succeed at anything, not even being the most notorious sex pest in Jump. Since it's been a long time since someone other than EmpressAngel posted viewing notes in here, I'll chime in with some stuff. Shenmue is almost finished, and I'm still enjoying it very much. However, I've found the plot to be bloated and harder to follow since the action moved to Hong Kong. I'm not sure if I would pin the blame on the show itself, but it's a stark contrast to the first half's narrative cohesiveness and simplicity; no matter what Ryo was doing, even if it felt like a side quest, he was always making some progress on the main goal. And everything that wasn't was still highly entertaining, like his encounters with the crazy old dude, or the various forklift adventures. This arc, on the other hand, seems to have as many dead ends as juicy ledes, and some parts of the overall story (like Ryo briefly moving into that temple) seem superfluous, though I guess I appreciate the narrative filigree (and Ryo getting to spar with that woman in the China dress). On top of that, I miss one plot point in particular from the first half: Nozomi talking to Ryo about if he actually had plans in life beyond trying to avenge his father. Guess that was never going to go anywhere once sailed the high seas. As a result, seeing her in the end credits feels rather awkward for reasons that go beyond her having practically disappeared from the main show; couldn't we at least have gotten one look at how things are going in Japan right now? Hopefully we'll get it in the finale. And speaking of: ooh boy, that promo. Looks like Ryo has immediately forgotten everything he learned about the Wuda in charging straight at Lan Di. I don't think that's gonna end well; looks like he still has a lot to learn, which is a bitter pill to swallow given how far I thought he had grown over the course of this arc. But that was sort of what I expected, given that the Chinese girl is primed and ready to finally enter the plot. Lupin the Third: Part VI... hmm, okay. I watched parts of Parts IV and V, and while I didn't finish the latter, I actually skipped most of the former in favor of watching the last four episodes, which is really weird given my viewing habits. All I can remember from the climax was that Leonardo da Vinci was involved; seems just weird enough. This time around, we have what seems to be a bold attempt at making a Lupin show where he isn't the main character. (Caveat emptor: I haven't seen The Woman Called Fujiko Mine.) Instead, we have... Tatsumi? That was my first thought; maybe it's the Sentai connection talking, but this Sherlock Holmes seems gruff, but also not particularly interesting, except for the fact that he has a Japanese schoolgirl; making things worse, Lily is a rather generic name, but that's just my opinion. The meat of the episode is typical Lupin: mostly not anything you haven't seen before, but entertaining nonetheless. Hope I actually ride this installment to its conclusion. Content ratings watch: Looks like this episode got a 14SV just for that scene of male gaze towards the disguised Fujiko? I didn't see anything else. If so, it seems overblown, but then again, so have a lot of Toonami's ratings in the recent past. Also, interesting tidbit I randomly noticed: You Moriyama, the director of Megalobox, did the ED, which I certainly wouldn't have guessed. It's nice and light with a bit of English lyrics, and I think it'll be a nice way to end my lazy Saturdays going forward. I miss Made in Abyss. Looks like Toonami aired another external music video, probably during One Piece (since I didn't catch it). Make that another week without a game review, which I'm genuinely bumming about. Has Toonami stopped doing any sort of goodies with TOM narration? I hope not, because it would be a waste of the new Absolution and this sweet, sweet packaging. -
Jason Demarco Just Gave out some bad news for toonami fans
Blatch replied to CountFrylock's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
This was enough to make me wonder: do you think we'll see any HD remasters of Gundam shows on Toonami? And if so, which one do you think would come first? I don't know how possible it is, but I'd like to see G Gundam air on the block, as its self-contained story and different tone compared to the rest of the series would work best. Wing would work better as nostalgia bait but I can't see viewers taking to it, and if Sunrise (or whatever they're called nowadays) really wanted to be bold, they could even air the 1979 original, but I don't know what that would accomplish outside of making up for the show's original run getting screwed because of 9/11. Of course, they also have that new series coming out with the female protagonist plus a new season of Iron-Blooded Orphans, so I bet we'll see one of those come first. First of all, hell yeah, but I do wonder if AMC calling the shots means Sentai might be limited in some capacity. We probably won't be screwed unless anime starts to air on their flagship. I also forgot about YashaHime. Viz is still very much a player in the industry, but I don't know if they still have their catalog titles from at least ten years ago. What was the most notable thing they licensed? Blood Lad? Well, other than Bleach, and lest anyone forget, it's still got a final season in the works. Hopefully Toonami is still able to do business with their leftovers and table scraps. -
Given that they had no trouble announcing the last two acquisitions, I think they'll add at least one new show on the 7th. They could still stall, though. We haven't any any DC animated movies in a decent amount of time, so I wouldn't mind another one of those. But I probably wouldn't watch it, if only because I never got around to any of my DVR recordings from late last year. As for Sketch's post: boy, what I would give to have at least half of those shows on Toonami. I don't think Girls' Last Tour would be possible without Jason recomitting to their pledge to show more non-action shows, though, as it's rather philosophical. Also, wait at least a few months so I can make my ratings images, thanks.

Round 6: "Open Your Eye-es!!!!" - TV-14DS The iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls Episode 10: "Our world is filled with joy!" - TV-14 (review post here, though it went up just today) In conclusion, happy Patriots' Day. I was aiming for an Easter release, but I figured I'd wait just a little because this holiday means more to people where I live. And now, the time is ripe for announcements. I have three new projects I'm giving screenshots to, and the first is a show that is currently airing. After taking a mulligan on takt op. (though I'm not dropping it, I can assure you), I figure it's time to take a crack at a show people actually like, and that show will be Spy×Family. You know, the hot new Shonen Jump thing? Mixed feelings on that magazine (and Crunchyroll, who has this show locked up nice and tight) aside, it looks like a show with a fun premise and interesting characters. Consider it part of the ongoing effort in this thread to include every show that involves CloverWorks and/or Atsumi Tanezaki. Project number two is a little thing called Girls' Last Tour, the second piece of the trinity of great shows to air on Amazon's ill-fated anime streaming channel (all of which Sentai subsequently rescued, because they love you, and you should love them back). Made in Abyss was the first, and the third was Land of the Lustrous, the latter of which I hope to also get to. This will be a rare case of me giving ratings images to a show after having watched it, though I never finished the initial subbed viewing. (This treatment will be dubbed.) Because of this, I know that the ratings won't be as boring as hell. And the last one is something I'm keeping a secret for a little bit longer. All I can say is that it's going to be something off-kilter, but also very special to me, and it'll involve something I haven't done in a very long time. As for some hints, I'll give just one: it's actually a little more obvious than you might think. And in addition, I plan on giving content ratings to Room Camp (also known as Heya Camp for all you weebs), the interquel to Laid-Back Camp which I've never seen, and will then roll right into S2 of the main feature, plus all sorts of ratings for other random crap I ain't seen before. So yeah: get hyped. -

Made in Abyss, Episode 13 (1-hour finale!)
Blatch replied to Blatch's topic in Episode Discussion Archive
Boy, does that ED get at me: revisiting the early layers of the abyss; even Marulk gets confirmation that their friends are okay; and Orth somehow has cherry blossoms, which represent a change of seasons and probably rebirth. Not to mention the tease afterward. Damn evil White Whistle. 😈 LATER, Made in Abyss... until July, at the latest. The movie is available on HIDIVE, but hopefully Toonami will be able to air it soon. And on a more cynical note, no Lupin promo tonight? So we have another night without a goodie, unless they either already aired a music video or are going to cram one in One Piece's slot. Disappointing. Welp, nevermind. Here it is. [lay down and take your rest] -
Made in Abyss, Episode 13 (1-hour finale!)
Blatch replied to Blatch's topic in Episode Discussion Archive
Yup, pretty much. As far as "scientifically engineered to make you cry" is concerned, the blanket and stuffed animals go a long way. But for me, it's Nanachi stopping things so she can apologize to Mitty that takes it over the top. After this, we get a little bit of everything: a mysterious flashback, Riko regaining consciousness, more naked funtimes... you know, so things don't get too oppressive. But it's this last past part of the episode that really ties everything together. Get ready to experience the Abyss's beauty one more time.
