We're at the peak of covid cases and i don't see them going down drastically enough where I'll be ok with going to bumfuck Ohio for no money lol. Like seriously 12 comics are going to risk their health to tell dick jokes to each other for no audiance.

I really hope so too, but I'm also not going to do something stupid. Believe me I would love nothing more than to do stand up every day, but you can't just ignore the fact that it's still very dangerous to throw something like that. Even a month from now it's still going to be a serious risk. Alot of comics are also overweight and almost all of them smoke so the risk to them is even more so. Thank you for saying that btw

Ask the resident comic about that honestly.. I've heard open mics and the comic world could be pretty cutthroat long before he provided some insight.

okay I will

Good decision! I know it sucks because I know how much you miss doing stand up, but I’d much rather you keep yourself healthy!

Thank you :)

Yeah I very much enjoy being alive. Covid would complicate that. A friend of mine is going and he's in terrible shape. I really hope he doesn't die. And I wish he wasn't going

depends on the person honestly. To get "make a living" great it takes at least a decade

Yeah, it’s not a fun time. As someone who has unfortunately experienced it, I seriously urge everyone to avoid stuff like this for quite a while...

I’m in good health and it hit me hard. I felt like I was on my death bed. So I can’t imagine what it would be like for someone who’s health is already compromised. Hopefully you can talk your friend out of it!

I can't talk him out of anything. "I'm not gonna live in fear" is all he has to say on the matter. He might fuck around and not live at all. This isn't a fucking joke. Btw I'm really glad you recovered.

Unless you're all putting the mic in your mouth you should be fine. Hell people work at the grocery store every day and manage. Just come out on stage and put a condom over the mic. Be a prop comic, the highest form of stand up comedy...

I’m sorry to hear that. It’s definitely not something to take lightly, especially if he’s already in poor health. I sincerely hope he changes his mind about going

Thank you so much! ☺️💗

It took close to a month, but I’m finally feeling so much better!

Most of it is learning comedic timing. So long as you aren't stumbling over trying to remember the joke and have a good pace you'll be fine. The people who bomb bad are usually either crack heads who just want to get up on stage to say things, or people who tell lots of inside jokes because they're the funny friend in their group and only know how to make their friends laugh.  The crack head ones are just bad though. I remember one guy was up on stage it felt like forever. He was just screaming about how much he hates his dad and that he's going to kill someone. Then started crying into the mic over his girlfriends dead kid. I was like wtf, how does anyone follow that? They eased into it though and the next person up just told really mean feminist jokes, and would call guys in the audience misogynistic assholes. Nobody was even talking to her she just picked fights with guys in the audience, then started talking about how powerful her pussy is. Her four friends at least thought she was funny, but were hiding their faces when everyone started looking over at them for being loud. Really if you think you can do better than that, then you'll be fine.

Did you catch the rona? I think my cousin has it, but he doesn't believe in it. Thinks is some Democrat media vodo or something. I'm like dude not much else is out that is giving people lung blood clots. With my lung issues I'm staying the hell away from him though lol.

I don't think he takes it as seriously as he should, but at the end of the day he's his own person. He is overweight and does smoke which is my concern. At this point I just hope he comes back healthy. There better at least be a damn audiance

Lol if you tell me where you saw the female comic I more than likely will know exactly who you're talking about. Idk the male because too many comics in Pittsburgh do the whole "I kill people" thing

It was at the improv. Yeah when I was going you'd find the occasional psychopath that just wanders onto the stage and just talks about drugs or gives murder confessions out of the blue. Also accurate image of how my really dumb cousin feels about covid19

I've seen her twice and nobody laughs at her stuff aside from her friends who are helping to empower her but also deeply embarrassed by her. What made it worse is that she did very little to change her act at all. It was just the same thing different marks in the audience. Then there was some girl who tried to copy Sam Kinison. The thing about Sam Kinison is that everyone knows after a point what you're trying to do. The thing is you really, really have to have a hell of a voice to do a Sam Kinison tribute bit. Also Sam's mic was calibrated for screaming into it. That is what they do all those hours of mic checks for. Open Mic night not so much. So when you yell into a mic that is set for people to just talk like normal humans, it peaks like crazy and makes whatever they're saying impossible to discern. I've seen a few sam kinison bits and they usually don't go great.

I did. I initially tested positive for Influenza A and Influenza B, so they wouldn't test me further. But I wasn't getting any better, so they finally had me come back in for more testing and ended up being positive for covid.

It's for the best, honestly. It really does a number on your lungs and breathing. My oxygen level was so low, the doctor basically told me to be prepared to be hospitalized if it got any worse. Definitely keep your distance if you think he may have it!

Record, invite me, broacast it live....I don't care, just make sure I see it.

I mean, I already saw Joker, so I know how this turns out....But I've never seen it in Ohio.

True. People are going to do whatever they want to do. But I do hope your friend has a safe trip and is able to stay healthy!

Yeah seeing as I already have lung issues and had that lung biopsy back in march, I've really been avoiding most everyone lol. I know in my case it would be closer to a coin flip for my survival odds.

Yikes! Yes, please be careful! It’s scary stuff!!!

I am apparently an overachiever and had also managed to develop pneumonia on top of everything else, so I’m sure that didn’t help anything. But it for sure gets to your lungs and wreaks havoc. I still have some tightness in my chest and it’s almost been a month since my symptoms started.

During these crazy time, a lot of bands are streaming live "concerts" / "fests" for home audiences. You guys should do the stand-up comedy open mic version of that.

@ghostrek your material better be riddled with sci-fi references or I'm gonna be majorly disappointed. That could be your schtick. You're the sci-fi comic. Make fun of Ghostbusters, but avoid making fun of the gender-swap Ghostbusters, as that's low-hanging fruit.

Kinison is one of those comics you really shouldn't attempt to mimic unless you're really good at it and it's understood you're doing a tribute show or something. There's a difference between doing a tribute show and being an open micer that's trying to bite their style. I see comics constantly try to do jeselniks dark shit and they wonder why it bombs. It's because that guy is a working comic that's been doing it for a long time and you're a kid trying to copy him lol. Sorry that's a pet peeve of mine. Don't get me fucking started on The kids that try to copy Mitch Hedburg. Cringe fest

There's actually people doing zoom shows. I'm not totally opposed to it but what works on there wouldn't necessarily work on an in person crowd. I can't really explain it. I'm sure you know what I mean being that you're in a band. I'll do it of someone asks me but I'm not blowing up inboxes begging to do a zoom show. I have done a podcast and a script reading online already which was actually pretty cool.

Saw someone try to do a mitch out at WVU, it was very cringe. Like you said though a tribute is one thing, open mic night is not meant for that. I do however like the meta nature of comedians realizing how cringe they were at one point, and will then do an imitation of themselves in the past doing a shitty imitation of someone else. I feel like that has some more personality to do and makes it something that is more theirs because they're making fun of themselves. Though there's also seems to be a fine line between telling a fun story about your life or childhood, and it becoming a ted talks. I feel like too many people use George Carlin as their idol to emulate. This is usually boomers that don't know what they're talking about, never understood the satire; and think a tight five is enough time to try and get political. A lot of people really just look at the success of a comedian rather than the road it took to get to that point. George didn't start out with political satire. He did an act and would work in a political joke, it went over well so he'd add more to the next act. After a while it is what became expected of him to be a political satirist. It wasn't an overnight thing, but he was doing it since the late 50s and 90% of the people just remember him for the HBO special he did in 08.
