It's sorta funny to think this was an Adult Swim Action show back when it aired, and I agree with you this show just reminds of watching Toonami back during the 2000 - 2008 period

Yeah I remember all kinds of weird animation was on tv in general back then Aeon Flux, The Maxx, Serial Experiment Lain etc. This fit in perfectly. Definitely what I consider the golden era

Oh wow yeah, I remember those.

Man, I almost forgot about The Maxx, it seemed so neat and disappeared so quick.

And that mature Spawn cartoon too.

Im gonna look for the Spawn show - totally forgot about that one. The Maxx episodes can be found pretty easily around the web. I recently rewatched and it was totally worth it.

Oh cool, I should do that too, I don't remember it in detail at all anymore so it'll be fresh.

It's too old for "HD" so I think upscaled is the best they can do, but on the plus side it was made in widescreen

Didn't remember for sure, but it's widescreen on both Funi's streaming (upscaled 1080p HD) and here's the old Geneon trailer also in widescreen

https://www.imdb.com/video/vi3617521945?ref_=tt_pv_vi_aiv_1

It depends on how the show was originally made.  It may be possible to remaster it to HD.  If it is locked into its original resolution then yeah, all they can do is an upscale.

Even still I feel like it should look better than this.

I my mind it's always had somewhat of a "hazy" look to go with the atmosphere, but yeah its definitely kinda soft. I can live with it if it was an early digital show given its age, since I don't remember.

Also if QTEC did the upscale for the Japanese BDs they always use too much digital noise reduction.

I didn't catch it's first run back in 05 either

I bought the dvds over the years when I found each at a decent price, and this is my first watch of it in awhile

But then again, I'm used to serving others their first time.

Yeah I haven't seen this in years, my first watch in a long time.

he only claims responsibility for edits when they make him appear "woke"

What edits are you talking about?  Do you mean the Alicization rape scene?

The man is on record multiple times stating he doesn't like fan service.  And they avoid those kind of shows like the plague.  Granted, most of them aren't worth airing, but still.

And yeah, I remembered when some edits happened in Fire Force with Tamaki and he said "we aren't editing Fire Force," haha.

If it is a case of a botched remaster that is quite unfortunate indeed.  I wonder if Funimation's versions look better or if they're the same.  Did they put this on Funimation Now or just releasing Blu-Rays?

Looks like an "animated in 480p LOL ur stuck in SD forever" kinda situation like all other early 2000s anime.

Only way you can really push something like that to higher resolutions is by going frame by frame in Gigapixel AI or something, because the standard QTEC method does jack shit.

thought so too

I think she was getting more established around this time

I think Fujiko was her first anime role

Looks like Fujiko was her first major role in a series.  She was Luna in Sailor Moon, apparently, not sure how much we count playing animals.  Her first one listed is playing Luna in a Ford commercial?  That can't be right?  Sounds like a commercial that would be in Japan and I don't know why it would ever be translated.  She was Kaori in Akira.  Though I'm not sure if this list on Behind the Voice Actors is in order of when the animes originally came out or when they were dubbed, and that could be throwing me off a bit.

And yeah she had had quite a few roles by this time.

And good god I didn't realize Metal Gear Solid 3 came out all the way back in 2004.  Doesn't feel like it's been that long...

Wow, you were ready fast lmao.  And once again thanks for the screen shots (except GXP's shitty art.) :D

But he has said that.  Though annoyingly I can't find the quotes now.  And to be fair, there's a difference between a fan service show and a show with fan service.  The foodgasms and fan service in Food Wars were highly overblown in my opinion.  The closest you could probably call any of those to a fan service show is Kill la Kill, and even that had a story and great animation.  Definitely not one of those shows I would call a cheap excuse to show some T'n'A.  I'm thinking something like Queen's Blade.

408.gif

:D

I don't think Toonami has ever aired any show like that.  A few of Tamaki's scenes were edited early on.  I think one of them didn't get past because Shinra was grabbing her boob under the top.  And for Toonami's part, I saw little to no edits of Administrator!  Though I don't know how you could show that season and do any heavy edits to her, especially when she is fighting nude!

Though the fan service got pretty heavy at times in Space Dandy, and they co-funded it, I still wouldn't call that a fan service show.  Also Demarco probably would have funded anything that had Watanabe remotely attached to it.

you guys were thining of series like queen's blade? like, i'm a huge fan of sexy fanservice, but demarco or no, stuff like that would NEVER air on toonami. like, even if demarco were a huge pervert, madl in love with fanservice, he'd never get stuff like queen's blade or high school DxD or Monster Musume approved on toonami.

reasonable fanservice shows are things like tenchi muyo and is it wrong to pick up girls in a dungeon and darling in the franxx. and weve already had shows of that caliber of fanservice on toonami. it's not unreasonable for demarco to say "i'm against straight up porn on our cable tv action block."

was paranoia agent in widescreen, though? since it's from 2005 i don't think it was. whatever visual issues you're noticing probably come from the fact that they decided to air the series now in 16:9 when it was made for 4:3

they should frame it like they did for DBZ Kai

It's available on Funimation Now. And when they posted that they got it they also said it will be getting a blu-ray in the near future.

I'm curious about this too.

Side note: Not that Amazon's info section is reliable, but it does actually list the old DVD set as being widescreen since it has aspect ratio as 1.78:1

Still been looking for something even more definitive, but I think it's possible that it might have been one of the earlier shows created in widescreen going by these two old Paranoia Agent DVD reviews I just found:
Here's one review for the volume 1 DVD posted back in 2004 that said the disc was in anamorphic widescreen:

https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/13010/paranoia-agent-vol-1/

"16:9 anamorphic widescreen presentation. Hope you got a big TV, because this is a great looking DVD. Some minor grain at one point that didn't look like it belonged, but there are several instances when it's used purposefully. The animation and colors rarely venture outside of the real world. The blacks are full and night is scary. The colors are rich and vibrant, and there's hardly anything over the top in terms of color usage....at least nothing that wasn't meant to be funky."

And this one mentioned it too and seems to be a review of the UK release of volume 1 posted in 2006:

http://www.cineoutsider.com/reviews/dvd/p/paranoia_agent.html

"Anamorphic 16:9, the picture is clean, with good contrast and colour reproduction, and there's not a lot more you can ask of an anime transfer. There are signs of an NTSC to PAL conversion, but it's a good one – there is little evidence of unintentional blurring on movement."

Interestingly also, like the one I found last weekend, old youtube posts of the OP and ED that I've found so far also seem to have them in 16:9 too despite being posted in like 2005 and 2006.

I also remember that one of my old favorite studios back when they were in their prime, Studio Gonzo, back when they were cutting edge, were already experimenting with moving to widescreen (some of their shows at this time were 4:3 and others were 16:9) at this point for some of their shows, like they did for their big 2003 show Last Exile (actually also released by Geneon/Pioneer like Paranoia Agent now that I realize it).

From what I remember, Betterman was the very first 16:9 TV anime. GITS and Paranoia Agent were just among the first 16:9 TV anime to air on [as].

1999? Holy shit...

Well, maybe not holy shit. I heard there were some OVA's released in 1.85.1 on LaserDisc in the 80's.

I'm thinking of a fan service show.  Like I said, not the same thing as a show with fan service.  So yeah something like that, or an ecchi show.  Demarco will never get anything like that.  The most extreme thing he got was Kill la Kill.

Uhhh I don't see Darling in the Franx being reasonable fan service.  I recently saw a clip of the show on a YouTube channel I watch.

Just wow... yeah.

But what I was referring to is Demarco says he doesn't like fan service personally, but it's obviously not enough to stop him from airing shows given some of the stuff he has shown.

DITF is also EXTREMELY homophobic so if Demarco has any sense he won't license it
