Chapinator_X
https://www.crunchyroll.com/animeawards/en/vote/index.html These awards usually discount quality content in favor of what’s popular, but I’m surprised they used Golden Globes rules to nominate Sarazanmai as a comedy instead of a drama. Also, shutting out Kaguya-sama & Sarazanmai in favor of O Maidens in Your Savage Season for AOTY nominations was a questionable decision.
The1gairon
Demon Slayer was definitely the darling of the year.
MasqueradeOverture
Y'know, I'm not as in love with Demon Slayer as everyone else is. IDK, maybe it's because I've seen the demon vs. blade-wielding warrior thing too many times before. The animation's nice but that's about it. PokeNirvash
Demon Slayer's good, but it's not 10/10 material. Also, Zenitsu sucks and Nezuko is overrated.

Toonami is supposedly getting into the meat of the show, the point that everyone is supposed to be on board with it, and I really don't see what the hype is about. There are still plenty of things to praise about the anime! But Zenitsu is really getting on my nerves, Inosuke is so simple he wore out his welcome an episode ago, the demons all have tragic backstories that the battles have become predictable, and Nezuko barely has screentime. I need to lower the volume when it starts now because everyone SHOUTS in my ear all the time! Edited February 18, 2020 by elfie
HardcoreHunter
I don't give these awards much weight, but I do remember the annoyance when they gave Demon Slayer best anime of the past Decade back on New Years. I think Demon Slayer is okay, but as I said in one of the episode threads is that if feels like it's copying a lot of the steps from Inuyasha; but poorly. It isn't a carbon copy but a lot of the characters fill the same roles. The problem more seems to be that the plot is kinda aimless. In Inuyasha there always felt to be some sort of goal in mind, and there was enough stuff going on in the background to explain how the party was getting by between episodes like Miroku or Kagome doing exorcisms, or them slaying a demon for pay. There is no such thing in Demon Slayer. First of Nezuko being being hypnotized to view humans as her family is similar to the Necklace Inuyasha has to wear, but worse. It just removes tension for simplicity. You don't want to remove tension in an action drama. With Inuyasha they at least kept a human element in Kagome needing to be the one to invoke the curse and condition Inuyasha to reflect on what he did. Nezuko has no choice, she's just brianwashed into thinking everyone is her family. From her vision it's kinda fucked as well because we have seen that she sees them as her dead family. Her family that she has already seen killed, but is now fooled into thinking is alive. Now if that is ever undone don't you think that is going to have some dark implications on her ability to cope with the death of her family? Also despite us getting to see that she directly sees other humans as her family, they introduce characters like the Yellow haired Demon Slayer who lust after her, and she tries to avoid him. Who in her family is she seeing him as? She seems to have enough sense to avoid him despite him being family towards her. Either way it would have shown a lot more for her character and her bother should she have remained a threat, and having her actually hold back on wanting to eat humans. Like would he just leave his box with every stranger he meets if he thinks she might kill them. Also we needed like an episode or two to build up his bond with his family, because I'm pretty sure she never acted like she does now from when she wasn't a demon; despite her brother saying she's the same. The flashback shown show that she wasn't at all like this which brings up the next issue. Things progressed too soon. It was what, one mission and he got his first major lead in finding not Naraku? That's kinda bullshit pacing. Not only that but the bigbad is clearly in one of the most populated cities we have seen, being very easy to spot by any demon slayer; but MC-kun seemed to be the only one to have found the Most wanted super mega awesome demon? He didn't even have any masking ability other than he could act human which isn't an exclusive trait among demons from the half dozen we've seen already show that ability. Speaking of which there is a healer in that same city that is a demon along with her assistant. This also goes against what the first Demon slayer we met had said about being pretty much a ghoul/zombie when you become a demon and nothing can change that. I find it hard to believe that the MC is the first one to make all of these discoveries withine 72hrs of getting his license. These feel like reveals that should have happened far later in the series, but they wanted to reveal it early so that MC would stop pulling punches against demons trying to talk with them. Except the first one that probably would have talked to him and spilled everything that wasn't under a curse would have been that Spider one who was wife of one of the big bads men, and he cut her head off right away rather than trying to talk her to death like he did with every other demon thus far. Third there is no good break between episodes. Inuyasha like I said did a good way of starting out episodes to show that the characters have lives between fade outs, or episodes would add in things like lets do this dumb thing for some quick money or a room to stay in. DS does none of that. There is no explanation in the anime at least in how they haven't dropped dead at this point from lack of food or rest. He isn't getting paid for demon slaying from what we can tell in the anime. The bird shows up says good job go here next. Which also sucks because it removes the need to actually use any information gathering skills or traveling and talking to people to get leads. In Inuyasha they would talk to people and if a demon was starting shit they'd have to assume that they had a shard, and sometimes there wasn't a shard. This one the magic crow just gives him the exact info to reach the next plot point with no filler needed, concise but bullshit. A lot of the issues with money and lodging though could have been overlooked had it been samurai rules. Like hey you have this sword this means you're at a different status level than others and can get free food and board wherever you go. That would have solved that issue if they didn't want to have money involved. Fourth this world makes no sense at all from the first episode. The MC has to be told about demons roaming the mountains at night, and he acts like this is news to him. From what we have seen demons are far too damn common, and he should have been exposed to this sooner than the viewers. This wasn't his first trip out of the village, he's made delivers before that. As well his family probably would have had a similar rule against going out at night because of that. Though then we go to a large city which has a mix of people knowing what demons are and completely oblivious to demons at the same time. The cities have a big nightlife despite this being a thing. So you're expecting me to buy that despite this being a problem for humans since the beginning of time that nothing has been put in place aside from a dozen demon slayers scattered across the country to defend themselves? From what we have seen it would be impossible for any large cities to exist without a handful of demon slayers to manage it at all times. The mangaka doesn't seem to have their mind made up on if Demon Slayers are meant to be a shadow organization or a semi-wellknown mercenary group; because a lot of people seem to have no idea what demons or demon slayers are, while at the same time having demons attack regularly enough where them being a shadow organization makes no sense. Fifth The Sun is OP please nerf. Its pretty much the problem that every vampire series has tired to nerf since the 90s. It's hard to have an overly threatening enemy when you're 100% safe from them for half of the day more or less depending on seasons. This isn't even like the sun hits them and they burn a bit if they don't move their ass. No they die the moment any ray of light hits them. This brings up the film John Carpenters Vampires to mind as why the fuck don't they just mob justice style hunt the demons like its the end of Shiki, and drag them into the sun? It goes back to the last issue of the world doesn't make sense. When the demons have this one huge weakness and it's never really exploited, then why are all of these battles done at night? Also the times when the sun is actually used are bullshit. You don't just forget about the sunrise when you're outside. I go out into the woods all the time in the middle of the night and wait for sunrise for hunting. There is a whole process of the sky changing before you'll even see the first ray of sunlight. In this show the sky goes from black to holy shit it sure is bright out. I do like this show but it does have a lot of problems, and the whole AOTY is a joke. It means nothing when it's a company that is trying to sell a product they own stakes in. At least with gaming it was originally done by journalists who were supposed to be unbiased. Then it got to the point where companies were releasing games with a GOTY edition at launch that it just became a buzz word. 1

Nezuko's design can't be the driving force of this thing alone. Social media and a honeymoon phase seem to be the main reason why it has as much hype as it does. This is the first action/drama shounen we have had in a long time that isn't an isekai or heavily ecchi fanservice. The ecchi series a lot of casuals are cowards and don't want to admit they like it, ontop of most of them not being very good story wise. The Isekai have become too formulaic, it's golden child SAO hasn't even been getting talked about since Gun Gal Online was introduced. Also it is animated by Ufotable they are good at drawing dramatic low light scenes and making eyes glow in the dark. For people who aren't used to this it probably looks amazing to them compared to a lot of the flat budget techniques many shounen series have been using. It's hitting a lot of fujoshi marks so we're getting a lot of fujoshits latching onto it. Same thing happened with FMA and Inuyasha ie majority of the porn is yaoi. I can tell that a lot of the reviewers are either super casual dub only watchers, or are only watching because their husbando is in it; because they keep comparing it to the best thing since FMA. FMA at least had a lot going for it, and I don't think it's saying much on someone's refrence range if the last great anime they have seen was from 17 years ago; 11 if you go by bortherhood. If you're super casual though and only get your anime through Toonami then yeah I could believe that they haven't watched anything better since then. As well I can believe it if they're only watching Dubs through Crunchy because crunchy barely dubs any shows, more so since their partnership with funimation ended. I've also encountered the new generation of anime fan that is possibly worse than ones that will watch dub toonami only. That is anime fans who refuse to watch anything prior to them getting into anime. They only watch new and will not watch any older series claiming they look like shit, or can just read how it ended. These people have zero reference for anime other than what is out; and the amount of people I've run into in public like this is annoying. So pretty much honeymoon period by uncultured swine who avoid anything that isn't action shounen etc. If you talk to anyone who watches a lot of anime this show is at best okay, or passable. For baby's first anime though this seems to be the best thing since the ipad.

Demon Slayer just falls into the same issue of black clover, in that other have done it before and have done it better. The big bad in Demon Slayer is pretty much a Naraku oc. An effacement sadist demon with black scraggly hair that really hates humans, but cloaks himself in disguise to fool humans, and can make other demons, that he controls via threat of a kill switch. It's the same character. Naraku just had a lot more build up to his character and introduction than "hey there is a demon king that created all demons, you should find him" two episodes later and he's introduced. They set it up like just finding info on the guy would have been a journey in and of itself. Nope he's just chilling in a heavily populated city, and acted like a fucking retard as if it was absurd a demon slayer would have found him; I mean his disguese is so perfect of wearing a stupid fedora the Michael Jackson wannabe bitch. Naraku at least had something better than a hat. The Baboon pelt was originally to mask his smell; not the best cover when they just switched to looking for the guy who smelt like baboon and wore a baboon pelt, but then he had the better idea with barriers; which didn't get old or overused at all (cough). The main issue with digital was more that transition period where everyone decided to try new styles when they were changing formats, and moe blobs blew up so they were trying to find that sweet spot between adorable and jesus christ what have you done to their eyes. Anytime you change a format though you're going to have a learning curve, so for a long time that was held against digital because we could take the peak of Cel animation and compare it to hot garbage and end the argument. Also why the argument doesn't get brought up much anymore since there have been improvements. Usually when it is brought up though it's because they insert garbage looking 3D renders that clash hard with the aesthetic of the shot. Overlord has some "epic" battles that were pretty much ruined due to the poor 3D animation used. It's really bad when you consider that 3D renders in anime aren't a new thing. Zoids did it 20 years ago and IT SHOULD NOT LOOK BETTER THAN MODERN 3D IN ANIME.

I never liked Naraku's baboon pelt, especially when I learned that's what he wore before I started watching IY in 2004. My associative image of Naraku was what he actually looked like (as a humanoid), so to find out that he was hiding behind a stupid-looking robe for so many episodes was such a disappointment. I'm over it now, but I'll never forget that initial disconnect.
