Naraku4656
so i need advice. i have a job that i like and i work with people that i like and i'm making ok money. problem is that my skill set is very niche and i am getting kind of tired of doing the same one thing all of the time. i was told that i'm doing very well and that they're very happy to have me on the team. so i don't really have to worry about being replaced (hopefully) but searching on monster on indeed nets me pretty much nothing when i look up what skills i have and what job they would translate to. another manager from another department wants me to move over to their department. i'd be working more in depth with some similar technology. it would give me way more latitude if i was to look for another job, but i don't know if i'm going to even like the work enough. it would require me to be on call, which i'm not now and would require that i may work late/on weekends which i also don't do. it wouldn't get me any more money or a better rank but it would get me more easily translatable skills. i've already applied for that position but i can withdraw and decide not to. i may burn a bridge with this person but it also might be better if it's not going to really do anything for me. what do

Lacks_Sympathy
I always look at a couple of factors when I'm evaluating a job. 1. Is this something that I'm passionate about? 2. Is the compensation commensurate to my skills/experience? 3. Culture/Leadership 4. Organizational Stability/Growth Opportunities 5. Work/Life Balance At the end of the day you have to way the pros and cons for what's important to you in a job. If you're happy and content with what you are doing (professionally and personally) then you should stick with it. I tend to have a little bit of an aggressive personality when it comes to stuff like this and kind of go with the "nothing ventured, nothing gained" mantra....so I'm always looking for greener pastures. I'm just a believer that you always need to grow and evolve if you want to reach a certain goal that you've aimed for. If you're already there and want to focus on other aspects of your life, that's great. If not and you feel like you have further room to grow then sometimes the risk is worth it. Good luck either way.
Naraku4656
i'm also very ambitious but it'd be almost taking a step backwards in a vain hope that it'll let me take a step forwards. the job i have now is great it just doesn't really translate well outside of my company. the job i'd be getting i'm less interested in, but i can more easily explain it to someone else
Still Me
if you like what you do now and it makes you happy...then don't change course...you don't want to get into a job that you dread going to everyday....I mean I like what I do now...and I'm ok with that...I'm not aspiring to be a pharmacist, I like more hands on and I like talking to customers....I feel more mobile....so don't change anything if you're not 100% sure you're going to be happy. Naraku4656
so even though it doesn't really have any portability, you think it's better because the devil you know vs the devil you don't?

GunStarHero
I'm one of the two chefs de partie at my casino and I was offered the promotion to sous chef. I declined because the increase in pay was negligible and because of the duties involved for such a menial raise. It was also not a traditional sous chef position and I would be more of a manager that would also cook. Our executive chef is kinda...uppity, and for no reason. So all of this has made me decide to stay put. I also bare in mind that there's a reason the position was open in the first place. And it was open before I even started my job there 8 months ago. Just use your judgment . Don't ruin a good thing, blah blah blah.
Distortedreasoning
you need to figure out what you want most. sounds like you got a nice set up at work where you like your co-workers and you ok with pay but you are getting bored with your work and you want more pay. if i were you then yeah, i'd take the transfer and prepare for whats to come and hope for the best. kind of sucks you have to be on call and work weekends but this could be your ticket out to something you want. Distortedreasoning
By executive order, I declare that my career counts and I will draw upon my smut wisdom to answer your question: It sounds to me like you want to quit the job u have now so you can get a job that will help you find another job if you ever quit that one. I personally wouldn't give up my weekends and go on call and burn a bridge just for that. agree 100% being on call sucks, especially at no extra pay. NaBarney
All of that sounds awful. You may as well make the change, if the biggest downside is being on call and working weekends that shouldn't bother you too much since you don't even do anything on your PTO

DragonSinger
I haven't worked a normal job in years but taking the second position just sounds like a pain if you're not getting paid more for it, especially if your free time is now spent being on call. Also, Nab is for taking the second position, so that probably makes it a bad idea.
CAC
Yeah i'm kinda in the same spot, doing good where I'm at but don't know enough to move up. I pretty much have to go back to school if I want to further my career and I really really do not want to do that, so I'll stay where I am till I screw up and get fired.... scoobdog
Without getting too specific, how is your current skillset niche? Unless it requires a highly specialized education, you should be able to sell yourself to performing any task with the right sales pitch. If you're not interested in leaving your comfort zone, though, you are better off staying exactly where you are. There is not point to advancing up the ladder or trying a new job if you're not willing to leave your comfort zone.
Naraku4656
well it's more a matter of if it is worth it or not. if it's not going to net me anything then why go over. it's not getting me more money or rank but it does get me different skills
