One thing that bothers me about anime

That's more of a line than a gap..idk. The line represents the meeting of the lips pretty well in that pic honestly I think. Do you mean when they have the mouth open or something? The giant and sometimes triangular eyes characters have in some styles of anime is what gets me.

Weird flex, but cool I guess.....I don't think that happens often.  Maybe it happens a lot in Hentai....Which tells on you.

The line is actually separating two, individual mouths. It's an evolutionary trait to allow for multiple phallic devices, ideal for hentai.

Its existence in general.

This analysis of the Eva movies left me feeling pretty shook. Not gonna lie.

Even though I've never watched Eva except for EoE, this resonated a lot more than I was anticipating...

It goes into the themes of rejecting escapism and embracing the real world and how basically the entire fan base got it wrong.

My escapism has always been drugs, not anime or video games but I guess it doesn't matter what method you take the result is still the same.

As gay as it sounds, I found this video to be extremely powerful and a refreshing and necessary splash of cold water. It has helped me become more life-affirming and optimistic. Though I still struggle to make meaningful connections with other people, I am at least trying to live for me first and foremost.

Center. Is it an artists mark or something?

Yes.  And the image you provided is a perfect example of a digital Line Drawing.  The gap in the center is a style of Line Art.  The thickness of the line denotes how deep verses how shallow the object is.  The thicker the line the deeper that part is on the object.

This phenomenon happens because line drawings have little to no shadowing/shading.  In a realistic rendering there would be some form of shadowing at the corners of the mouth and under the lip, but in a line drawing there is no shadowing - instead they make the line thicker to represent shadow...the gap in the middle is where the lips meet at the shallowest point - if you were shading the lips you would use hardly any shading at the center and it would look almost as if the top lip and bottom lip were becoming one - if the lips were to become one without shading...there would be no line separating them, thus...gap.

I hope I typed that in a way that made sense.

anime_face_shading_normal_lighting.png.8749470ad1e429bb7bd3746d61804d94.pngSo, you'll notice that the little bit of shading that is present is on equal sides of the image (on all but the nose.) Equal meaning the shadows on the left are the same as on the right.  They are mirrored and underneath (below the chin, below the bangs.)  Which means that the Light Source is hitting directly center, slightly from above.  The lightest/brightest part would be top center of head, center of chin, center of lips.  So there should be no shadow, and therefore no line at any of those points.
