Barney the dinosaur EDITED for TL;DR

Ugh, let's try this again. TL;DR in red at the bottom.

Boo's recent T-Rex with boxing gloves vs Barney the dinosaur posts got me thinking yesterday...

When Barney came out, I was already outside of his target demographic age wise, but I was still a kid, so I hated him right out of the gate.

What surprised me though was even a lot of parents hated Barney. My exposure to Barney was just very small clips of him doing his laugh and the "I love you... you love me..." song. I figured that Barney was probably wholesome, so the parents of the kids who watched Barney would "like" Barney just because he was wholesome TV for the kids.

I also wonder what Barney has done for nurturing or hindering children's interests in learning about dinosaurs. I fucking loved dinosaurs as a kid. And I think that's why I found Barney so offensive. Dinosaurs are cool! T-Rexes are vicious and bad-ass! Barney is none of these things! I wonder if people who loved Barney as children, when they outgrew Barney, they outgrow dinosaurs in general too? Because Barney is "for babies" so they associate dinosaurs with being for babies.... Or did loving Barney as a little tyke lead to loving dinosaurs even MORE once you left Barney behind?

Another thing that interests me.... I don't care to google which came first, but I think Jurassic Park and Barney came out around the same time.... do you think that if Jurassic Park didn't become the cultural phenomenon that it was, the cutesey loveable purple guy would've been what everyone thought of when they thought of dinosaurs? We may have been lucky that Jurassic Park's tremendous success keeps people aware of how badass dinosaurs are, and we can just ignore that singing purple thing. Without Jurassic Park, Barney may be what everyone thinks of when they think of dinosaurs, and then no one would like dinosaurs when they grew out of being toddlers.

So.... Was Barney around when you were young enough to be in his demographic? Did you like him? Why or why not? Do you think Barney helped shape your interest or lack thereof in dinosaurs as you got older?

Parents.... does / did any of your children watch Barney? What do you think of the show as a parent?

Ehh ... I don't remember Barney teaching anything. I just remember there was Barney, a girl dinosaur .... and like .... a yellow one?

I dont think it had any input into my interests in dinosaurs because dinosaurs are obviously just cool in general. I haven't seen Barney as an adult ... now if you wanna talk about my adult opinions on Sesame street thats a different story

I fucking loved Lamp Chop! xD The episode when she had to get glasses .... I felt that in my soul

Lambchop has been delegated to dog toys now though xD

I see them all the time in Walmart and Petco, and I'm just like .... damn .... you deserve better

My youngest sister watched Barney, and since I took care of her a lot I saw it too. I remember it as trying to teach morals with little other substance. Be nice and make friends and everyone is happy! Which I suppose is fine when you're two.

I think most grown humans see that simplistic message and react negatively out of an awareness of life's complexities. Like people that are asses no matter how nice you are, or the ones that will see your friendliness as weakness. Or maybe I'm looking at it too hard and that stupid song is an annoying earworm.
