Rank the Toonami shows that aired this week!

Here's a tradition from a long time ago, back on the ASMB. Some dude with the username "CowboyBebop4Ever" would do a weekly series of threads (such as this one) where people could do a top ten of the anime to air that weekend. I've decided to bring it back in a more compressed form with this thread, because critical analysis is fun. On the other hand, I typically don't watch every show that airs on Toonami every time, so I just rank what I do, hence the more general thread name.

Just for reference, or in case you're too lazy to click on another thread, the current Toonami schedule is below. Have fun.

Spoiler

10:30 p.m. - Dragon Ball Super (dub premiere)
11:00 p.m. - My Hero Academia (premiere)
11:30 p.m. - FLCL Progressive

12:30 a.m. - JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders

And now, without further ado, here's the first reply. This is discussing Toonami for the week of June 30, 2018...

  1. FLCL Progressive (Offering you every single fetish under the sun, plus some surprisingly conservative politics.)
  2. Pop Team Epic (All it really needs is more Touhou references.)
  3. Dragon Ball Super (IMO, pretty much everyone was made a fool of in this episode, and I think Vegeta deserved it the most.)
  4. Hunter × Hunter (It's amazing how a one-off character voiced by LittleKuriboh wasn't even in the top three of crazy things to happen this week.)
  5. Lupin the Third, Part IV (Stop using the word "secrets" so much. It now could mean almost anything to me.)
  6. My Hero Academia (Once you hear Monica Rial's nasally voice, you might never be able to unassociate it from Tsuyu... or, in my case, Tomoko.)
  7. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders (An arc that revolved around video games ended up being one of the most boring in the show? Go figure.)

  1. Pop Team Epic (I am not upset, even if you all are.)
  2. FLCL Progressive (So does the extraction of one's N.O. actively harm them, or does it just cause massive migraines?)
  3. Space Dandy (On the merits of its beauty alone.)
  4. My Hero Academia (Getting the job done fast enough to let All Might de-transform faster.)
  5. Black Clover (I said it before, and I'll say it again: it sucks to be Finral.)
  6. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders (Also sucks to be Avdol, apparently.)
  7. Hunter x Hunter 2011 (Ditto for Killua.)
  8. Dragonball Super (And Vegeta.)
  9. Naruto Shippuden (And Naruto's gay boner for Sasuke.)

I was going to see Super beats them at all but that's right, it was the stupid Arale episode.
Not liking Progressive, and Pop Team Epic was better than I thought it would be but still not good. Already dropped the rest of the shows a long time ago(MHA before it even aired, tried it on VRV and didn't like it).

Damn, did I even see everything?? I guess so...

12. Lack of Gundam

11. Pop Team Epic - Sure, I laughed at it, but it is objectively the worst-drawn show on the lineup.

10. Dragon Ball Super - funny but forgettable!!

9. Black Clover - I didn't expect this show to go the romantic comedy relief route, but it did!

8. Hunter × Hunter - Well, here's where Death Parade got its first arc idea!

7. My Hero Academia - Kind of a transition episode in which not much happens, but that stinger for next week, oh man!!

6. Naruto: Shippuden - Madara is just as menacing as ever!

5. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders - Joseph is such a sly old man, and is Avdol really gone??

4. Lupin the 3rd - Painting the tiger's nails pink? Don't try that at home!

3. Space Dandy - New classic awesome!

2. Cowboy Bebop - Old classic awesome!

1. FLCL Progressive - Two words: "Hello Hidomi-nator" Really looking forward to the finale now!!

This is fun.

1. DBS - Yeah, annoying filler is annoying, but it had some funny gags in it.

2. HxH - Damn, Killua seems much darker when Gon isn't around to actually remind him to not be an assassin.

3. Naruto - Good arcs and good episodes. A little bit heavy-handed with the emotion, but otherwise a solid episode and an example of how shounen can be good.

5. MHA - Eh, it gives some good exposition, but I'm hoping the next arc has a bit more action in it. ( I dropped around this episode on simulcast)

6. Black Clover - Well, at least Asta isn't screaming as much. Needs moar Pecker though, especially since it wasn't much of an action episode.

1. My Hero Academia- If only it had a better main character. Sports Festival that dude with the silver and red hair is a better character than the main guy, the wimp forget his name Tetsay or something.

2. Pop Team Epic- These girls can get it

3. Attack on Titan- Sasha can get it, and she eats like a man, none of that vegan bullshit, can take her to McDonald's instead of some fancy restaurant where she'll only order a salad and croutons.

4. Dragon Ball Super- very sucky, snowballing downhill

1) Attack on Titan - A solid first episode to the new season

2) JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable - An amusing first episode with plenty of character

3) Hunter x Hunter - The King and Poof show some growth and things are ramping up

4) My Hero Academia - Good setup for the Sports Festival, Bakugo calling out everyone else is pretty dang amusing

5) FLCL Progressive - It is still a decent finale but loses points for being a rerun

6) One-Punch Man - Saitama vs the fly is always hilarious no matter how many times I see it but this also loses points for being a rerun

7) Pop Team Epic - The mafia story was a highlight but the rest was just okay

8) Dragon Ball Super - This was pretty stupid honestly and doesn't do much for Krillin or Goku as characters but points for Roshi getting weed

I didn't watch Black Clover, Naruto Shippuden, Lupin the 3rd or Cowboy Bebop

Thanks to Sketch for keeping this thread alive. I completely ignored it after just one weekend because I didn't think my thoughts would be complete without the Lupin rerun. I'm now eight episodes behind on that show, so I have no hope of doing this competently at any point soon.

Now, just as a scratch...

  1. My Hero Academia (Like I said... spider eagles.)
  2. Attack on Titan (That great animation was the only thing enabling my enjoyment of this one. When it ended, I lost all focus.)
  3. Attack on Titan rerun (And this one had none of it, so it's even further down.)

Attempting to revive this concept now...

1/19/19 LINEUP:

#12: Pop Team Epic -- Fell asleep. Zzzzz…

#11: Naruto Shippuden - seriously, you thought being an impostor was gonna work against a boy who makes clones of himself??

#10: Dragon Ball Super - some funny moments, but pretty much went nowhere and only set up next week!

#09: Black Clover - I still have a hard time following this new arc...

#08: Gundam IBO - Ended Toonami with a bang, but otherwise it kinda fell flat!

#07: Mob Psycho 100 - And the shadowy figure behind The Claw is...

#06: Boruto - call me crazy, but I really enjoyed the psychology of this one!

#05: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable - the greed-fueled confrontation with Harvest comes to a hilarious and satisfying confrontation!

#04: Attack on Titan - Great action in the Crystal Cavern, plus Historia's epic CMOA!!

#03: Megalobox - PTSD is NO JOKE!!

#02: My Hero Academia - FINALLY, what One-For-All really is, revealed, and how it actually originated from All-For-One!!

#01: Hunter x Hunter - the thrilling conclusion to the battle between Netero and Meruem stole the show!!!

Finally a weekend with limited BS and more substance

1. Megalobox- about time this started cookin. Some of the earlier episodes were cliched and predictable, and I felt the whole fix thing coming, but good enough to set up some hype for the final eps. 9/10

2. Sword Art Online S3- What I like about SAO is that the voice acting is good and the animation style is cool. The goblin fight was fun, but Eugeo needs to cool it with the vibes he's giving off. 8.5/10

3. Attack on Titan S1- Rerun, but a good start, before I found out that AOT was gonna become a talky shonen. 8/10

4. My Hero Academia- Convinced it's a Naruto ripoff now. It took me a while to realize it, but now it's clear to me. I can't stand that sappy music that plays during the repetive melodramatic moments between Midoria and All Might every episode. If not for Tsu, I'd consider dropping this. 4.5/10

Didn't watch anything else, the other ones suck. 🐺

Don't worry, apparently that's going to change pretty rapidly back again to full-on action with the back half of the season, which is supposedly why they stopped where they did, to give the animators more breathing room. :)

Looking forward to the return of the titans.

At the same time, I still really liked that we got a ton of info with S3 part 1.

Toonami Block airing 5/11/19:

#10: Boruto - A rather electrifying episode, just showing how far this week raised the bar
#09: Shippuden - Nothing makes a good mother like saving your newborn from a giant 9-tailed fox!
#08: Attack on Titan - Pyxis is THE MAN!! But the rest was kinda uneventful until the twist at the end.
#07: Hunter x Hunter - The Alluka/Nanika storyline is starting to merge with the election storyline!
#06: Promised Neverland - Double-Agent Ray, plus maybe searching for secret passages not a good idea?
#05: Black Clover - A drinking contest between Charlotte and Vanessa made for a great time! Cheers!
#04: JoJo Part 4 - A new Queen-themed stand enters the fray, and for one boy it's Groundhog Day!
#03: SAO: Alicization - No surprise the lolis were a trap, but then the fight with Fanatio was just stunning!
#02: Dragon Ball Super - Great episode, even if Funimation slightly botched the presentation
#01: My Hero Academia - All Might vs. All For One was just plain glorious, everything we'd hoped it would be!

Toonami Block airing 5/25/19:

#10: Boruto - Let's screw around on a cute little fetch quest!
#09: Shippuden - Farewell, Kisame, you sharky bastard!
#08: Promised Neverland - Krone becomes an ally, and then gets the boot...
#07: SAO: Alicization - Kirito & Alice, just hanging around...
#06: Hunter x Hunter - Pure political intrigue! And Leorio's a wanker!
#05: Black Clover - Nice volcanic visuals as Asta may finally have met his match...
#04: JoJo Part 4 - Can Kira be any MORE of a bastard? Using the cat plant...
#03: Dragon Ball Super - Cabba mans up but he's no match for Frieza!
#02: My Hero Academia - MHA Cribs was cute, plus Tsu's emotional moment made for a really intriguing start to Toonami!
#01: Attack on Titan - Damn, it's great to have new episodes of this show back! What's in the damn cellar? Hopefully we'll find out soon!

1. Attack on Titan (It might not be Titan porn, but what we wound up getting is good too.)
2. Lupin the 3rd: Part 5 (Zenigata would easily be one of Lupin's best friends if they weren't on opposite sides of the law.)
3. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin (Okay, now I'm starting to understand why some people enjoy the political intrigue side of Gundam.)
4. My Hero Academia (Leave it to MHA to make Bakugo screaming at professional victims a deep moment.)
5. Food Wars! (I liked it better than most everyone else and even I think Gundam had the better premiere.)
6. Dragon Ball Super ("We're fifty-thousand guys now!" "Sup.")
7. Boruto: Naruto Next Generations (Asuma and Kurenai's kid grew up cute, and surprisingly older than I expected.)
8. Naruto Shippuden (Without the context of him being poisoned, Naruto stabbing his own hand really does look like he's got a self-destructive personality.)
9. Black Clover (I'd probably be enjoying this more if the literally who characters had better designs.)
10. Sword Art Online: Alicization (This episode was stupid, and I'm the guy who thinks Fairy Dance was the best pre-Alicization arc.)

Resurrecting this topic, and just off the top of my head:

8/3/19 AND 8/10/19:
#10 Food Wars
#09 Boruto
#08 Naruto Shippuden
#07 Dragon Ball Super
#06 gen:LOCK
#05 Black Clover
#04 Fire Force
#03 My Hero Academia
#02 Gundam: The Origin
#01 Lupin III Part 5

Now that I've seen all 10 shows on 8/17 with the sound on, I can confidently arrange them such:

#10: Boruto - Despite the gray morality, these Katsuki guys are just so uninteresting. Thank you, NEXT!
#09: Naruto Shippuden - Sasori was the first Akatsuki member to die, and now he's the first to die again!
#08: Black Clover - The tournament is winding down already!? Kinda weird that there won't even be a "final match," and the semifinal will do.
#07: Food Wars - A little predictable, but there WAS an interesting twist, and it was still a treat to watch!
#06: Dragon Ball Super - Frieza tries to make a deal with Universe 11 and level the playing field, but it's Gohan who ironically gets sacrificed!
#05: Fire Force - An infernal who can talk? Cool! Company 5 has an Esdeath ripoff with Nia Teppelin's eyes? Not quite as cool.
#04: My Hero Academia - So long, Season 3! Wait, what's that? See you again next week!?
#03: gen:LOCK - No real battles, but this show just LOOKS cool and has dope insert music! Fun to just watch the mechs "play!"
#02: Gundam: The Origin - We meet Lalah, and all hell breaks loose on the moon! R.I.P. Dr. Minovsky; hello Red Comet!
#01: Lupin III Part 5 - Lupin steals the show one last time at 12:30 with the perfect end to an almost perfect arc (A, A, A+, A+)!
