The Toonami Ratings Thread 1.0 :You are on a new board

I believe Dragon Ball Super's continued presence on the Top 5 most talked-about shows on Nielsen Social more than qualifies it as a "hit." However, it is unknown whether that has something to do with the fact that new subtitled simulcasts also come out on Saturdays.

-Flip Flappers (C'mon, Toonami, pull that stick out of your ass and get something for the girls from Sentai already!)

Considering the director is confirmed to take on the job for FLCL2, I would say that this is a excellent idea. However I can't see it in anything other than 12:30am or later since I'm not sure how receptive the general audience would be towards the occasional scenes of lolis either naked or in suggestive situations. I haven't actually watched the show but I've seen enough screengrabs to get that idea.

I'm sure people had a lot to say about GT as well =P

What, in 2012 when it came on NickToons!? Because when it was on Toonami in 2003-04 was a VERY different time. But I know it did bad enough in the ratings that it lost daytime Toonami to Miguzi. Don't see that fate befalling 8 PM Super anytime soon.

"Adult Swim’s late-night line-up returned from holiday hiatus as follows:  DRAGON BALL Z down 0.08 to 0.42 (the primetime episode was down 0.03 to 0.28), ATTACK ON TITAN down 0.08 to 0.34, TOKYO GHOUL down 0.09 to 0.29, LUPIN THE 3RD down 0.02 to 0.24, HUNTER X HUNTER down 0.03 to 0.27/653K, NARUTO down 0.02 to 0.23/568K, and GHOST IN THE SHELL down 0.05 to 0.20/521K."

12:00 AM DBZ Kai: The Final Chapters 938,000

12:30 AM Attack on Titan Season 2 795,000 (84.75%)

1:00 AM Tokyo Ghoul 685,000 (86.16%)

1:30 AM Hunter × Hunter 653,000 (95.33%)

2:00 AM Lupin The 3rd 595,000 (91.12%)

2:30 AM Naruto: Shippuden 568,000 (95.46%)

3:00 AM Ghost In The Shell HD 521,000 (91.73%)

Well I guess that's pretty good. Nothing under 500K. But that 0.20 in 18-49 for GITS stinks to high heaven, especially since it WAS a great episode!

It's not just that. They're running an anime block without running any actual mainstream hits except for AOT.

And in addition to AOT getting a bad timeslot, the second season has been pretty disappointing.

DBZ Kai isn't a mainstream hit!??

Yeah but are we counting reruns of 20 year old shows? It's a bad sign when your top show is coasting on nostalgia.

Again, the dub of the current episodes for Kai aren't reruns.  And of course the dubs of Super are dub premieres (but no one cares as much as Super  :P ).

In a way they are repeats only under a new name and better quality

The words "anime" and "hit" don't mix.

The people who made AOT a hit here or jumped on the anime bandwagon because of it have learned to hate dubs with a passion. The sad fact is that the art form known as Japanese animation has outlived TV's usefulness, and Neo-Toonami's viewers (2012-current) who may have been introduced to said shows have abandoned the block to find shit themselves (and not in English as that's the Devil to neo-weebs). In others words, Toonami has created the very thing that will kill it.

Then again, Nielsen ratings for cable's most likely being phased out as nobody's fucking watching Conan, Mr. Robot, or Twin Peaks (at least not live).

First season of AOT did well. One Punch man did well. I'd call them hits for the US audience. The first run of Jack did great numbers.

If you put stuff on that US audiences want to watch they'll still watch.

But if you're going to sucker punch your block by leading with reruns of Jack or low quality stuff like  Super then you can't expect anything good.

Huh, I've never thought of the Toonami revival as Neo-Toonami.  Actually, when I hear NeoToonami, I think of something else...

Does anyone think that AOT couldn't outperform Super if they swapped spots?

Also about the differences in taste between the Japanese and US

http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2017/07/11-1/recreators-attacks-titan-in-newtype-character-rankings

Top male character? Kirito. From SAO. in 2017.

I was saying that as soon as Jack ended, AOT should have moved up to 11 PM and allowed a new show to debut instead at 12:30. Unfortunately that didn't happen, and now we've lost 11 PM, for the time being, at least.

Now don't count out Jotaro from being this year's Saitama, even at 12:30. Stardust Crusaders WILL be a dub premiere (beyond Episode 4) and SHOULD be a huge hit!

Wrong. Mikasa Ackerman is #3.

Why they didn't have her listed from Attack on Titan is sure beyond me though!

It's Japan. They all know who Mikasa is.  Saying Mikasa from AOT would be like saying ice is cold =P

That would be nice, but I'm predicting more of the same type of ratings at 12:30. We'll see though, they need to really hammer home that this is a whole different,  largely episodic, more modern, no funny accent Jojo that has a good mix between humor and action.

I couldn't get the message to go away at first because it prevented you from disabling your blocker... but as it turns out, uBlock is unaffected. That was what got me to (perhaps finally) switch.

Well, Stardust Crusaders does have a few things going for it that either its predecessor or AOT S2 didn't:

1. It'll be a dub premiere, unlike its predecessor, which had a bare-bones home video release in late 2015 so it was out for almost 10 months before Toonami acquired it.

2. Its dub won't be streaming online anywhere but Adult Swim and that will be behind a log-in wall for at least a couple of weeks, unlike AOT S2

3. It contains the technique in JoJo that JoJo is most well known for--the STANDS!

4. For the most part it won't be led-into by Dragon Ball Super arcs that are simply rehashes of the movies, and DBZ Kai has finally gotten to the serious part--the Buu Saga!

JoJo is gonna get the same ratings as the old Jojo =P

Not if they beef up the Saturday pre-Toonami schedule by playing 2 hours of McFarlane shows beforehand, just sayin'.

I believe that may actually have more bearing on whether individual shows are hits than the quality of the shows themselves, though there ARE night-winning exceptions like AOT S1, DBZ Kai, One-Punch Man, and Samurai Jack S5. As for Stardust Crusaders, we'll just have to wait and see. Other than the survival of the big bad from Part 1 and the main from Part 2, I hear it pretty much reboots the series.

I can't say I'm so sure Stardust Crusaders will do much better than the first show.  Most of the people who knew of JoJo and wanted to watch the anime have already done so, and because of that, we shouldn't expect mega hit ratings like DBZ.  Beyond that, I doubt DBS will leave the front of the block, which means we'll be hemorrhaging viewers unless that either becomes the first airing or gets pushed back later, preferably the latter since it seems the former won't help much at all.

Toonami does not have as strong lead ins as before. Venture and Rock are never going to do as well as 2 hours of Bobs and American Dad. That plays a huge factor where the night starts viewerwise

Even Family Guy's ratings have begun to cool.  So it's lower all around l
