Every Lupin III show is self-contained.  You do not need to watch 1 show to enjoy another.

Well the ratings itself says another story

Besides toonami seems to be airing shows they like

Kill la kill was really one of the few shows that appeals to bother genders of the audience since then they failed to provide anything decent. They choose super over everything else that was a mistake and I hope it stabs them in the back to the point of lose of bleeding

I'm fine with them airing Lupin. They knew it wasn't going to bring in ratings, that's why they gave it a terrible timeslot right off the bat. It benefits from the exposure and they probably got it for almost nothing.

Making Super their flagship though, huge mistake. A mistake that will probably prevent them from even being able to consider getting Mob Psycho, MHA, Konosuba, Re Zero, Kabaneri, Tanya, Overlord, Gate, and every other recent anime that could actually do well on Toonami.

Sometimes I wonder if this thread is just an excuse to shit-talk Toonami without sounding like you hate it.

Well you have jinga to use as a punching bag

You think they produced these shows to appeal to American ratings??

I do have a problem with DeMarco and Co picking shows ''they'' like, instead of what is known to be good by the most people possible.  Sure they have DBZ and Super, which is their safety net because DB anything brings in the big ratings anyway. But the rest are shows they just pick and that we are stuck with because 6 people decided one day that everyone should deal with their whim and their whims alone.  I mean okay, they have a short block to work with. Sure. But you need to use that block wisely.

They're not even picking stuff they like. They're picking stuff up based on some online tumblr poll that only 10 people know about. They like Gundam and ..... other than that they don't really know much about any other anime.

Unless you think they watched TG and GXP and were like "YES! THIS! PLAY THIS!"

Gundam's gonna continue to be a block staple as long as DeMarco's raging hard-on for anything Gundam continues (ratings be damned, I'm OK with this decision).

We could have had Mob Psycho or MHA over Tokyo Ghoul, but those were both simuldubs for FUNimation's site and the price point may have tipped the scale considering how much cash they probably blew on Super, Titan, and FLCL. I do think those shows will still come at some point.

I saw a post DeMarco made while at AX.  He said that when Jojo ends in Januray, they'll look into either of those shows for possibly replacements.

You can't use those as examples.

TG - they air that due to fan demand, ignoring that fans typically have no idea what's actually well written.

GXP - that came from a time when the crew picked shows differently, and they only saw the first few episodes of it, thereby giving them an entirely wrong idea of the kind of show it was.

Doesn't make much financial sense to get stuff like MHA or Mob and then run it in the 3rd slot. I'm skeptical they can get anything like that until Super is over, or they're allowed to bump it down the lineup.

Posted

Contrary to last week, I actually will post the ratings... for comedic purposes.

Here they are.

DRAGON BALL SUPER            ADULT SWIM 11:30 PM 804 0.4

DRAGON BALL Z KAI/FINAL ADULT SWIM 12:00 AM 725 0.4

ATTACK ON TITAN                 ADULT SWIM 12:30 AM 631         0.3

TOKYO GHOUL                         ADULT SWIM 1:00 AM 565 0.3

LUPIN THE 3RD: PART 4         ADULT SWIM 2:00 AM 472 0.2

DB Super's ratings actually got worse when it was a premiere. Let that sink in for a moment. Now it's on to next week to see if that was a fluke, perhaps due to the DirecTV sort-of outages.

You know what the sad thing is?

Dragonball stuff still does crazy well.  That new video game (that looks better than Super, thanks Unreal Engine 4!) is essentially a license to print money.

But Toonami can't make that into ratings.

The 3rd slot is better than AOT got until its last few episodes! And since JoJo is getting the 3rd Slot back for the first time since Episode 19 on March 4th, I think it's gonna be alright.

BTW, these numbers LOOK bad, but please consider that the "Marquee 3" were FUBAR for a large percentage of the viewership this week, and it's really not so bad.

Never mind the low total numbers. All 18-49s affected by DirecTV's partial outage except Super virtually tied and the ones that weren't affected were up slightly. Meanwhile, the 18-34s were down but still the Dragon Balls dominated despite the fact that the competition in Live PD's final 30 minutes and the last part of CONCACAF Gold Cup ate into a Super and in the latter case, a Kai, that were significantly handicapped. Both of the USMNT's goals were scored during Dragon Ball Super, so that the Gold Cup beat it is no surprise to me, especially since Super was screwed up on DirecTV and possibly ANOTHER cable platform! That a show like that can still manage about 500K in 18-49 is pretty miraculous!

Because lightning probably won't strike twice, next week I'm expecting BOTH Dragon Ball Supers to significantly outperform their counterparts this week. But I guess we'll see.

We can't judge from this. You see numbers that got worse, and I see numbers that didn't get much worse due despite better competition and an unfortunate outage.

Because clearly, everything can be given an educated result just by only 1 week of a premiere at 11:30 PM.

The guides were all wrong. Not many people knew the new episode was at 11:30.  They assumed it was a rerun. Plus people's DVRs recorded the wrong episode as well.

It's only Tuesday, so there's plenty of time to fix this, but it pains me to say they haven't fixed it yet for this week, at least not DirecTV. I can't vouch for other on-screen guides from other cable services, though.

Starting the long awaited S2 of AOT in 4th was a pretty terrible decision as well.

Psh, like Unreal engine 4 was needed to make it look better than Super.

You could easily have said "thanks to a Nintendo 64 and a 40 year old color television"

What is that btw, the 15th DBZ fighting game?

Yeah, but it's only the third 2D one that isn't a cheap cash grab.

With the news that Toonami is shifting back to 11 this week, we'll be in for a period of adjustment again.

It's even weirder than that...

http://www.adultswim.com/videos/schedule

(And click on the "SAT, JUL 29" tab...)

It seems they're actually doubling up on Dragon Ball Super now with last week's episode at 8 and the NEW episode at 8:30 instead leading-in to an hour of Rick & Morty at 9 and an hour of Family Guy at 10. I'm at a loss for words at this point! Hopefully that's wrong and they're showing the last 2 weeks' Supers instead at 8 and 8:30, but I'm not holding my breath.

But here's what we know about the ratings so far for July 22nd:

"Adult Swim changed its late-night block, at least for this week, placing the previously primetime DRAGON BALL SUPER at 11:30PM, where it was at 0.39 (up 0.13 from last week), with DRAGON BALL Z steady at 0.35.  The rest of the line-up had ATTACK ON TITAN steady at 0.31, TOKYO GHOUL up 0.02 to 0.28, LUPIN THE 3RD up 0.02 to 0.24, HUNTER X HUNTER up 0.02 to 0.25/500K, NARUTO steady at 0.20/436K, GHOST IN THE SHELL steady at 0.17/367K, and SAMURAI JACK at 0.15/323K."

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-saturday-cable-originals-network-finals-7-22-2017.html

So now we have...

11:30 PM Dragon Ball Super 804,000

12:00 AM DBZ Kai: The Final Chapters 725,000 (90.17%)

12:30 AM Attack on Titan Season 2 621,000 (85.66%)

1:00 AM Tokyo Ghoul 565,000 (90.98%)

1:30 AM Hunter × Hunter 500,000 (88.50%)

2:00 AM Lupin The 3rd 472,000 (94.40%)

2:30 AM Naruto: Shippuden 436,000 (92.37%)

3:00 AM Ghost In The Shell HD 367,000 (84.17%)

3:30 AM Samurai Jack S5 323,000 (88.01%)

TOONAMI TOTAL VIEWERS AVERAGE - 561,250

For those keeping score at home, that is a new low for 2017, even undercutting the AOT S2 marathon!

Yeah if anything, the ratings for the pre-Toonami line-up are of bigger concern than Toonami itself.

Well I guess adding another DBS showing and expanding/moving Toonami earlier is one way to address this...

Alright, let's wrap this unfortunate turd of a week up, shall we?  :poop:

TOTAL VIEWERS RETENTION

8:00 PM Dragon Ball Super 715,000

8:30 PM Samurai Jack S5 455,000 (63.64%)

11:00 PM Family Guy 947,000

11:30 PM Dragon Ball Super 804,000 (84.90%)

12:00 AM DBZ Kai: The Final Chapters 725,000 (90.17%)

12:30 AM Attack on Titan Season 2 621,000 (85.66%)

1:00 AM Tokyo Ghoul 565,000 (90.98%)

1:30 AM Hunter × Hunter 500,000 (88.50%)

2:00 AM Lupin The 3rd 472,000 (94.40%)

2:30 AM Naruto: Shippuden 436,000 (92.37%)

3:00 AM Ghost In The Shell HD 367,000 (84.17%)

3:30 AM Samurai Jack S5 323,000 (88.01%)

TOONAMI TOTAL VIEWERS AVERAGE - 561,250

Well, at least Family Guy didn't even crack a million. Decent retention for the Super premiere, but Samurai Jack at 8:30 and Venture Brothers completely trashed whatever momentum Family Guy would have had, considering that the ONE TIME DBS actually premieres at 11:30, the #1 satellite company DirecTV had a VIDEO GLITCH that basically made the entire first 3 shows unwatchable! I mean, what are the odds??

It all combined to result in a Toonami block that was down almost 50% from last year's block, but I digress...

ADULTS 18-49 RETENTION

8:00 PM Dragon Ball Super 375,000

8:30 PM Samurai Jack S5 236,000 (62.93%)

11:00 PM Family Guy 542,000

11:30 PM Dragon Ball Super 496,000 (91.51%)

12:00 AM DBZ Kai: The Final Chapters 447,000 (90.12%)

12:30 AM Attack on Titan Season 2 396,000 (88.59%)

1:00 AM Tokyo Ghoul 354,000 (89.39%)

1:30 AM Hunter × Hunter 319,000 (90.11%)

2:00 AM Lupin The 3rd 314,000 (98.43%)

2:30 AM Naruto: Shippuden 256,000 (81.53%)

3:00 AM Ghost In The Shell HD 222,000 (86.72%)

3:30 AM Samurai Jack S5 192,000 (86.49%)

TOONAMI TOTAL VIEWERS AVERAGE - 350,500

The 18-49s, on the other hand, really weren't that bad. That average is actually the 2nd highest for this month, beating last week, and was down from last year by only 42%. And look at Lupin go! It retained a whopping 98% in 18-49, and 94% in total viewers!

CURRENT SHOW AVERAGES

Tokyo Ghoul - 281,400 (15 episodes)

Lupin the 3rd - 210,800 (5 episodes)

It's really sad that the only show left on Toonami that still averages over a million and 600K 18-49 is Dragon Ball Super. Hopefully JoJo will do well and join the club next week, now that ratings drains like Samurai Jack and Venture Brothers are gone from the pre-Toonami lineup! But the bigger question is: how in the hell is college football going to affect this??

Posted

I posted this elsewhere, but if Toei really is the one who is dictating all of these stupid Super airings, then I don't even think it's worth it to air the show anymore.  Or at the very least, move Super down to the latter half of the block after the premieres.  It's become fairly obvious at this point that a rerun of an episode that aired three hours before can't keep a decent audience, so why use it to lead off the block?  Probably a stupid Toei mandate as well, but I made my point.

That's called the end of anime on TV.

Hah, the guy may suck at his job... but he's made himself irreplaceable. He goes, Toonami goes.

Total Viewers - 772,583

Adults 18-49 - 464,167

Adults 18-34 (Estimated) - 305,750[/glow]

What more can be said? Season 1's lowest point was 979K viewers. Season 2's HIGHEST point was only 951K viewers!

Premiere ratings dropped 38.3% on average from Season 1 to Season 2 in total viewers, and 30.8% in adults 18-49.

The 18-34 ratings of S1 cannot be estimated, but at least S2 likely got above 300K viewers 18-34 on average. Let's just hope Season 3 does better next year!

Nobody asked for Toonami to take over, or to air a bunch of crapy anime and no American action cartoons.
