Why would anybody steal Immodium?

I went to the family dollar this morning, and while I was waiting for the clerk to find her way to the register, I took a look in the locked case to see if they carry my brands. They didn't, but what they did have locked up was the Immodium and all the generic equivalents thereof. I asked the clerk, and she said that they had to, because people were stealing it, and she had no idea why. (Answers delivered through gritted teeth; whether there are a lot of idiots like me asking, or because there's a sordid story behind it, I don't know).

So tell me, all you trend setters out there, what is so alluring about Immodium that it has to be locked up? I've never even seen that done with Robitussin DM. Is there some kind of never poop again fad going on, or is it something more arcane?

I didn't know this, I just googled it quick.

(Actually, I read the article - thank you. I just wanted a chance to say that in a thread about an anti-diarrheal.)

In my neighborhood, the stores keep all the mouthwash behind the counter because street bums would steal it to get drunk.

Yeah, the active ingredient is an opiate.

That's what makes the clerk's reaction even weirder - nobody has ever seemed to have a problem telling me that I have to sign for real Sudafed because you can make meth out of it, or that they need ID for Robitussin DM because the kids drink it to get high. But this chick - the look on her face was like I'd asked her where a good place to get kiddie porn was.

Ya know what I hate....strangers walking up to me and asking me to buy them sudafed, with their own money of course :catlol

I don't know if they do anything special with the immodium or take really, really large amounts of it

From what I read, they take extremely large doses of it, to just get... kinda high..... which they deem dangerous with all the other shit in it.

Back in my day, we just took a shit ton of coricidin.

I did some more readoing about it, and apparently what they take is metric fucktons of it. The max recommended daily dose is 16 mg for an adult, usually in 4 divided doses...people who are trying to get some kind of opiate-type effect(beyond constipation) are taking 200-400 mg/day. My colon would never speak to me again, no matter how high I got.

Edit: I might as well turn in my decoder ring and resign - I've hit the point in life where normal bowel function is more appealing than getting high.

The  generic drug and OTC drug lineup are behind the counter with the cigarettes at my DG maybe its all DGs

This was a Family Dollar. I'll have to check at the drug store the next time I go; I wonder if it's a general thing, or maybe just a chain by chain thing.

There's the embarrassment factor.  We were constantly finding empty packages of Mydol, Monostat, tampons, Prep H, etc.

When my older daughter was in middle school, she saw some woman take an antiperspirant stick off the shelf, use it, and put it back. From that day to this, she will dig to the back of the shelf before she'll buy one, and she'll inspect it as soon as she gets home to make sure that it's unused.
