wacky1980
soooo maybe i've been waiting for the solar eclipse for several years now. until about a week ago, i had my itinerary all figured out too. then wife decided she wants to come and bring the kids along. well, so much for driving down to shawnee nat'l forest, dumping the truck, and hoofing it out to some remote clearing to set up camp. and of course, it's way too late to book a hotel or a campsite within the path of totality at this point. ok, new plan! since we're technically only about 3 hours' drive away from the centerline of the eclipse, i found a nature preserve outside columbia mo, talked to the site manager, and received his blessing to find a clearing out on the preserve to watch the show. we can't camp out the night before, but since we can drive right up to within a few yards of where we'll set up the cameras and etc, we should be able to get out of the house around 7am and have plenty of time to be set up before the show starts at about 11:46am. got all my solar viewing equipment out of storage (maybe i bought the stuff a few years ago in anticipation) and fired up the old camera. still need to go test it out to make sure i can get the shots i want out of it. hopefully i get some good pics to bring home. i was looking at solar filters for photography yesterday, and anything decent is $100+ so fuck that. i'll build one out of some solar film and a uv filter or something. will probably also put together one of those pinhole shadow boxes to keep a quick eye on things, and also for the wife/kids to check out so they don't have to stare up all day. anyone else making plans to watch the end of the world happen live? making human sacrifices / conjuring up the old spirits / getting really fucked up? DragonSinger
I must have missed hearing about it due to watching news about more discrimination to our soldiers for being trans thanks to the guy you voted into office. Is this the hot topic in Bubble World where you get to ignore the problems that you cause?

wacky1980
i'm taking a whole day. the eclipse will be about 90% where i live, but i've never seen one at 100% so i'll do what i have to in order to get there. then there's the 4/8/24 total eclipse that's also gonna be passing over just south of here. the kids will be old enough to appreciate that one, so mark those calendars now for another personal day. DragonSinger
Thousands in our military are unsure about their job status in the near future thanks to me voting for a sexual predator, but you're totally supposed to ignore that I brought on these consequences and listen to me talk about an eclipse. Nah.

NaBarney
Yep got the day off months ago, going down to my friend's farm in the middle of nowhere w some folks, right exactly in the sweet spot. One guy has a telescope w a component that let's you safely view it, so he says. Should be cool, I'll probably never get to see one again (without moving somewhere far away)
naraku360
Don't forget to look directly at it. No point in going if you don't get the best view.

With a magnifying glass about 8 inches from your eye, if you get it just right you will feel a slight burning sensation.... that means its working. wacky1980
Does everyone have the time of the eclipse as 4:21pm Est? no. it will move from west to east, and will take about 2 hours to cross the continent.

wacky1980
here's a fun interactive map of the eclipse. click on your location and it will tell you what percentage of the sun will be obscured, plus the times of the start and end of the eclipse for you. https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/interactive_map/index.html

DragonSinger
Solar eclipses aren't anything special. I'll go out of my way to see a lunar one because the color difference is more impressive, but solar eclipses always bored me.

Top Gun
If I wasn't over a 10-hour drive from totality I'd totally be doing that. As it is I might see if any stores around here are selling the glasses, or just hit up Amazon. There's always a good ol' pinhole viewer as a fallback. The 2024 totality path is more like 6 hours away, which is far more do-able. I just wish one of the damn things would swing by the megalopolis. wacky1980
i'm about 3 hours from the point where the totality paths of the 8/21/17 and the 4/8/24 eclipses intersect (makanda / cedar lake il) and i had plans to go down to that area for both of them. i can't take the young kids on a backwoods hike this time around though. in 7 years, maybe...
