Just asked my dad about it again and a correction: he was indeed slapped across the face and hit across the wrists with a ruler by nuns in first and second grade, but it was not at the school I attended. He attended that school too, but only in later grades. This woulda happened around 1966/1967. He also around that time saw a nun pick up a kid whose hair was deemed too long, hang him upside down by the legs, and literally mop the floor with his hair. Yeah...He also remembers being grabbed by the back of the neck in fifth grade for arguing with another teacher, this one not a nun.

In all fairness/truth I don't entirely remember what I disliked about it anymore, only that it definitely bugged the crap outta me for SOME reason as I was reading it. Been too long since I read the series too. The English releases are omnibuses iirc.

Yeah the ending certainly opened up the possibility of them going as they are. Insomnia's a strange book. It's massive and was written before the last four Tower books, but is crucial to the climax... Plot wise it does follow an elderly widower for 800 pages, but I dunno something just clicked with it for me. For such a massive book I finished it very quickly. By my standards anyway. There's also an abortion/domestic abuse subplot that's just...kinda there.

I remember remarking on the old boards when the series ended that I was okay with no kiss because I read one of the author's driving forces behind writing the series was he felt younger kids were getting too deep into physical relationships too early in life. It certainly fit as an ending in context to what came to that point. The anime will never get a sequel, which is unfortunate, but it did at least end in a very similar manner to the manga all things considered relationship wise. Plus it spared us the idol arc, the only section of the manga I didn't really enjoy.
