  1. We both know that's not true. He hangs around and keeps coming back no matter what.
  2. In what way? For me, OG Asuka's bitchiness and attitude were an essential part of her character, they were a way of masking her extreme inferiority complex and self loathing. Unlike Shinji (who internalizes), she externalizes her feelings. She is desperate for love and affection from others but doesn't want to lower her emotional walls to let anyone else in. She lashes out and projects her rage and pain onto others (especially Shinji and Rei, who both embody things she hates about herself). She's ambitious, arrogant, and desperate for external validation because fundamentally, she can't see any inherent value in herself as a person. Her foreignness just emphasizes her feelings of isolation and being an outsider. Asuka was indeed intolerable and not a pleasant person AT ALL, but I don't think she was ever supposed to be. I felt like I could strongly relate to some of her emotional issues when I first watched this show when I was younger, though. I had not yet seen a character like her, or one whose character flaws were explored in such a way. And actually, this is something more recent shows with Rei and Asuka clones get wrong --- they are just generic tsunderes and moeblobs, completely missing the point that in NGE, these were NOT portrayed as positive personality traits!
  3. I'm glad this series will be available for a newer generation in at least SOME legal form. It's one of the most influential anime ever made, for better or for worse. Though, precisely because so many series have aped its concepts and characters, I imagine there will be some people who think it's "unoriginal" despite being the OG... (kinda like how some newer viewers don't see anything special about JoJo --- because some of the tropes it invented and popularized are so common by now). Some Eva fans are unbearably pretentious and toxic twats, that's undeniable. But I can say that for me personally, it's one of my favorites. At the time I first watched it, I was going through a period of extreme depression and was essentially a NEET, so that might have made a difference --- but really, I had never seen an anime that managed to encapsulate depression itself in such a way. (Anno was struggling through depression and a lot of disgust towards the industry when he made it amd EoE, and it's really obvious. EoE is pretty much a giant middle finger to all the whiny nerds who bitched about the original ending). And on that note, I liked the TV ending, fundamentally it had a positive message. The series doesn't end with some big battle, but inside Shinji's own mind, with him finally accepting himself and the value of his own existence, and choosing to reject Instrumentality and live in reality. It's still a simple but powerful message to this day in Japan, where people literally work themselves to death, are so lonely and socially isolated that people refusing to leave their houses and preferring waifus over human beings are documented social phenomena, which has one of the highest suicide rates and lowest birth rates in the world. Hits a little too close to home for the otaku audience it was aimed at though, which is probably why some of them got triggered and sent Anno death threats. Much easier to run away from your miserable life into media escapism! See: the current glut of "generic self insert nerd escapes into another world and becomes cool and powerful" titles. Anyway, it's certainly not perfect or as "deep" as many of the fans try to make it sound, with many unlikable (by design) characters, but the Eva experience was very therapeutic and cathartic for me, so it still holds a place in my heart. Which is why I'll hang on to my long OoP boxsets even though they're going for a decent amount of money now. 🤣 Feeling a little uneasy about the supposed redub though...I'll keep an open mind, but I'm skeptical.
  4. It sure felt like more than 43%. Of course, the other problem the Bleach anime had was that even a decent amount of the canon material was just...not very good. Especially in Hueco Mundo, which was so poorly paced that it made the rampant filler arcs necessary in the first place.
  5. Bleach was just unlucky to come out before the anime industry started changing their model ("seasons" vs. continuous long-runners). Something like half of the final product was filler episodes. It was ridiculous.
  6. That post is even more ridiculous because the Eclipse is the most infamous moment in the series. Even people who are not familiar with Berserk know about it.
  7. Don't forget "cute girls doing cute things" anime. Many of those series featuring a predominantly female cast are fapbait aimed at otaku men. Which uhhhhh...I mean there is a niche for that, but it's definitely not "representation". I feel it's worth mentioning though that having a lot of shounen on the block isn't automatically some turn off to women. Many shounen, and other "male oriented" series, that have achieved a lot of success were in part able to do so because they appealed across demographics and were able to attract a lot of female fans --- with JoJo being one of the early examples. Like I can tell you many ladies were perfectly okay with a series starring the likes of Joseph Joestar. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
  8. Well hey, as a female between the ages of 12 and 34, I can say that I don't really watch Toonami anymore. And I'm not gonna lie, I would rather watch romantic Hallmark schlock over stuff like Black Clover, Super, or the Narutos. (Not that I really watch much TV at all, but if I HAD to pick...) Romantic schlock is a one-and-done with with at least some possibility of satisfactory payoff within two hours of viewing time. By the way, I think it's a little disparaging to talk about "romantic schlock" when a lot of the block could pretty much be described as...well, shounen schlock. Of course most women are going to prefer schlock that's oriented towards them.
  9. Not sure why this was needed, and live action adaptations of anime don't exactly have a stellar track record, but...ok. Casting choices and the soundtrack are going to make a big difference in the likelihood of this turning out to be remotely decent at all.
  10. You've really mellowed out over the years. You used to be really relentless with your hateboners at every possible opportunity, but maybe that was just an inevitability of the more toxic environment of the old boards. It's a good thing.
  11. What do you mean by this?
  12. No time like the present to read it
  13. Gotta say I'm loving this recent trend of older, completed manga works getting a second chance at a proper adaptation. There are so many good manga out there. Fruits Basket was my first shojo and a "gateway series" that got me into manga in general, so I hope it turns out well.
  14. Kind of hoping the final arc eventually gets animated just for completion's sake tbh
  15. Speaking of shows airing this season whose previous franchise entries have aired on Toonami before: new SAO. I'd say it's just as likely (if not more so) that Toonami might attempt to get it vs. TG;re. It seems to be getting pretty decent feedback so far, too. Apparently the "no Kirito" factor makes a big difference lol.
  16. Have not seen any of Black Clover yet, so that comparison is lost on me. But this sounds promising. I don't hate all shounen, but I guess you could say that in some ways I've "aged out" of them (and have seen enough animu that I recognize all the common tropes), so they bore me a lot more easily now. Mostly because teenagers are boring. Of course, I'll admit that I've enjoyed a lot of the shounen series I have because of the quality of the hawt dudes, if there's some good husbando material for me to fawn over, I can be pretty forgiving. (Cool badass females and interesting, developed characters also requested, of course). Hey, at least I'm honest. Mama knows what she wants from her Chinese cartoons.
  17. Idk, the Shadow Realm had strong connotations with hell, so despite the censorship attempts, the implications still kind of ended up being just as disturbing.
  18. Never seen or read MHA, seemed like kind of run-of-the-mill shounen to me. I guess this is a good chance to check it out and see if that initial impression was accurate or not. Even if it is, I might still be able to enjoy it is it's well-done or different enough.
  19. I liked the game a lot and found the storyline very intriguing and surprising. But it takes a while to get there. For better or for worse it's one of those games where most of the interesting plot progression is heavily stacked towards the endgame. So you kind of have to be interested in the setting/gameplay to get to that point.
  20. >keeping an ex on your friends list
  21. Do you have any oil under your house?
  22. I loved Yu-Gi-Oh! so much in middle school. I suppose it was a "gateway anime" of sorts for me. As an adult, I recognize that it's extremely campy and kind of dumb. But I still can't help but love it and have a soft spot for it. I have a lot of good memories with it.
  23. @CaptainStarwind I never said that it was likely to be true, just that there is precedence. I agree It's most likely a glitch.
