This is a consequence of the media pushing the idea of "red" and "blue" states for decades. Makes everything seem cute and neat and like there's some kind of clear division when in reality people's beliefs are quite a bit more messy and complicated than that. I say that as a "blue" person who lived in "red" states almost all my life. There were plenty of people like me (and the reverse too, "red" people in "blue" states). At any rate talk of secession is stupid at best and dangerous at worst, and is not the kind of talk we need. I really can't take it seriously when the topic comes up, because I don't think most people who suggest it seriously, GENUINELY understand the implications of what they are suggesting (because that would require historical knowledge as well as awareness and acknowledgement of the ugly human consequence of population upheaval, economic collapse, and potential war).

...that pretty much is what "de-nazified" means, it's a dog whistle. Saying "Ukraine does not exist",which Putin has, is also a dog whistle. Russian media is very good at using this kind of doublespeak. (Like how it's a "special operation" and not a war).

Things were already getting worse in Russia economically even before the war happened (although sanctions are accelerating it obviously). At least for common people in the regions outside Moscow and St. Petersburg, who have always been ignored by the Russian government. The pandemic took a big toll on them. Cost of living and food prices were already rising (and their salaries/pensions are much lower than here, so stuff like that has a big impact). Sanctions could cause pain comparable to the late 80s and 90s though --- shortages, very high levels of poverty and sharp increases in associated social ills (crime, suicide, alcoholism, etc). Ironically, playing off of Russians' fears of returning to that era is a factor in how Putin has remained in power.

Bleach - Thousand Year Blood War Arc to premiere October 2022
Winter_Rain replied to Jman's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
There's a masochistic part of me looking forward to this. Seems only right for the last arc to finally get animated. Can't decide though if I want the anime to improve on the source material, or if Bleach deserves to be animated exactly as it is, in all its trainwreck glory. -
One Piece is BACK on Toonami this Saturday
Winter_Rain replied to 3ngag3's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Didn't expect One Piece to come back to television, but I guess their chosen starting point (post-timeskip) makes sense, it's the easiest spot to jump into for new people. Doubt I'll be watching though because while I do follow the manga, I've heard the anime's pacing can be pretty bad. 😅 -
Yashahime: Princess Half Demon to replace Promised Neverland
Winter_Rain replied to Jman's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
From what I've heard this "sequel" is pretty much animated fanfic. 😶 -
Did you do enough research into the show?? The characters aren't explicitly Japanese, but they're also not whitebread white people either. Spike has a Jewish surname, Ed is brown, and Faye is from Singapore, a multiethnic Southeast Asian country mostly populated by Chinese, Indians, and Malays. The casting 100% deserves to get questioned if it just "happens" that the actors all end up being white with Northern European features.

I thought most anime was late night TV? And there is always the infamous Chapter 16.5 for the people who want their SAO a little more spicy... 🤣 The "no personality" thing is exactly what makes Kirito so popular, and is exactly what propelled Twilight to success. Because then the target audience can use the protagonist as a self-insert. Only difference is that one is for girls and one is for boys.

I mean You could take it as a massively unsettling BAD END downer ending when you look at it that way. Because otherwise the entire series was pretty much pointless. Essentially nobody and nothing changed.

Tbh to this day I'm still not sure if Kubo is a hack writer whose good content was a fluke, or if he was really a troll consciously writing bullshit.

I missed out on this show the first time around, so I'm interested in seeing it now.

It's pretty much the light novel version of Twilight. Became puzzlingly popular despite being amateur and spawned a million emulators. And hell, one of the Twilight emulators (50 Shades, which started off as Twilight erotica fanfiction) became crazy popular in its own right. It's clear --- the next stage in isekai evolution involves BDSM. Really badly written BDSM.

That actually could have been an interesting plot if his seeming plot armor and Gary Stuness (like the dual wield) really was just dumb luck and his version was just buggy and glitched somehow. Then he gets to find out he was never as good as he thought, it could have been anybody, and gets crippling survivors' guilt! 😈 But in general, my core problem with SAO was that it felt like a first draft --- potential is there, but the ideas needed a lot more refinement and some things should have been axed completely before it was allowed to be formally published. Then again, the LN crowd doesn't exactly have discerning tastes, from what I've seen...

Off the top of my head I can think of: -JoJo -Parasyte -Ushio and Tora -Karakuri Circus -Cutie Honey -Banana Fish There have also been some older anime getting more modern "remakes" (Space Battleship Yamato, Legend of the Galactic Heroes) As well as other properties that have been re-adapted or re-imagined in some form in recent years (Sailor Moon Crystal, Megalo Box/Ashita no Joe, Captain Tsubasa) There might be more I'm missing, but those are all pretty recent, and that shows a greater willingness of the industry to tap deeper into the vault for ideas. Downside to this is that there's a ton of anime being produced right now, and having to fall back on remakes isn't always positive, especially if it's poorly done. Hollywood and the TV industry seem to be clinging to this "nostalgia trend" too, unfortunately. It's not good to be too stuck in the past and constantly trying to recapture lightning in a bottle instead of just...you know, making something new.

It's a very scary time for young men in America.

Ichigo and Rukia had good chemistry in the actual series, Rukia getting downgraded from the main female character to just another Soul Reaper side character that shows up occasionally was just some majorly bad writing. We spent the beginning of the series developing her and Ichigo's dynamic, and entire (long) arc for him to rescue her, fighting her brother and her friend along the way (which were partly such great fights because, y'know, they had actually meaning against plot-relevant characters instead of just being random fights for the sake of fights), and then in the end is able to accomplish the goal of saving her, but the main villain escapes to fight another day (which by the way, Aizen's whole villain reveal at the very end of the arc was another very good moment, because the Obviously Evil Gin was being set up for that role the whole time). We spent all that time showing what a corrupt and crappy place Soul Society is, with deeply entrenched inequality where only the privileged (nobles) and lucky (people with spirit energy) get a chance to live anything remotely resembling a decent (after)life, while the millions of other souls get to spent the rest of eternity living in squalor without even the prospect of seeing their relatives again. At the beginning Rukia makes us that the afterlife is a good place, but when Ichigo and co. actually GO there they see the truth about what a craphole it is, with most of the Soul Reapers being indifferent to these problems at best and downright assholes at worst. Like --- this is a really good setup for something bigger and Kubo could have explored some really interesting themes with this. Aizen could have been a really interesting and complex antagonist, as a defector who wanted to dismantle Soul Society's structure itself, from the top, and allied himself with Hollows who regained their humanity. Instead he was just being some generic God-complex villain. (And the final arc villains DEFINITELY had a good reason to hate Soul Society, and that arc could have been fantastic under a better writer who was actually interested in an overarching thematic narrative instead of just bullshitting with 10 chapter long fights against nothing characters until he literally got shoved out the door by the Jump editors). Bleach was just infuriating because it got me hooked in with a strong beginning and have a lot of potential to be REALLY good and then it's like...during the Arrancar arc he just didn't even know what he was doing with the story anymore and it all went downhill from there. And I, a glutton for punishment, followed it every week for years until it finished...holding out that tiny glimmer of hope that maybe it would become good again. Goddammit Kubo. The whole final pairings things was just icing on the shit cake and was almost as cringe-worthy as the pair-offs at the end of Naruto. Sakura and Orihime weren't my favorite characters by any stretch but they certainly deserved way better than getting stuck with their childhood crush for their whole lives, as if a girl is never, ever allowed to emotionally mature and grow as a person.

Admit it, you like that. No one will ever love you as much as Onee-chan!

Different strokes for different folks and all that. It also helps that I was able to just simply watch it for what it was without any preformed opinions about whether I "should" like it or not. I had a general idea of the storyline and some of the characters, and mostly watched it because it's a very well known and influential series and I wanted to have that frame of reference. I like watching some of the older shows that blazed the trail for later series. (That's one reason why remakes like Devilman Crybaby and the licensing and adaptation of some older series are really good trends imo --- they're bringing classics to a new generation of viewers).

Yeahhhhh...that kind of nonsense is what happens when dudes' only knowledge of women comes from porn and anime.
