Jeff Harris shares his extensive thoughts on the state of Toonami
Jman replied to Sketch's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
The biggest issue remains that Warner’s siloed content means that DeMarco lacks the resources a Netflix has. DeMarco can’t snap his fingers and get Sakamoto Days. -
Demon Slayer: Swordsmith Village premiers on 8/10

The arc is on Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll. Also odds are by the time this does air, Netflix will have the Hashira Training Arc. What’s going to really screw over the Toonami airing is going to be the Infinity Castle movie trilogy because Toonami doesn’t do movies and Netflix is going to want those as soon as possible. -
Jeff Harris shares his extensive thoughts on the state of Toonami
Jman replied to Sketch's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Mr. Harris isn't coming out of nowhere with these ideas. He's been watching this block pre-foundation of Adult Swim. And for all that history, he has been fairly consistent with the idea that he believes Toonami is an action block, not an anime block. He was the one standing up for things like the 2003 Masters of the Universe when even DeMarco felt like his arm was being twisted to air it. The problem is that for a lot of the stuff, Toonami isn't getting the best action stuff from Max. Instead of Suicide Squad Isekai and the upcoming Creature Commandos, it's stuck airing Kinnikuman But Boring, and a Rick and Morty spinoff that probably made more sense two seasons ago when Rickamania was at its peak and running wild all over the internet. At the very least, they should have dragged in the current voice actors. Nostalgia for what it's worth is also a fickle thing, due once again to the rise of streaming. Reminding people shows exist will more often than not have them go to places they don't have to wait on the network's schedule. I think that's also part of the reason that MeTV Toons has seen success, the material there is interchangeable, not serialized. It's clear that the block isn't dead at this point, MAWS, despite its contentious take on the Man of Steel, has done pretty well with its main demographic, but a lot of the newer shows are getting the bulk of their viewership from Max, not Toonami. -

No but you can campaign on it. -
I know Olympic coverage is shaped by what we have good athletes in, but I’d rather watch Olympic judo and boxing than swimming.

It’s been a while since I hated on a show to amusing unreasonableness, but I have half a mind to just put a link to Tiger Mask W when Invincible Fight Girl comes out just to show how to do a wrestling show correctly.

Replace Mashle with Suicide Squad Isekai and I think you’ll be mostly accurate. -

They’ll be almost caught up. I’m still pretty sure Netflix is getting Hashira training first, to say nothing of the Infinity Castle trilogy. -

Thundarr is the one I’m most interested in admittedly because he was a staple of their advertising despite no new material, and because the original show was designed by the duo of Alex Toth and Jack Freaking Kirby, the King of Comics himself. That is a pedigree right there. I’m also…pretty sure if the creators didn’t buy the rights back we’d be seeing the SWAT Kats instead of the Herculoids. I wonder how long before a Centurions comic is allowed?

It's that or "I won't be running again in 2028, I don't give a shit." It looks bad any way you slice it. -

As for Kinnikuman But Boring, I saw some quotes that really put my issues with a lot of this "Diet Anime" in perspective, and why I'm hoping between X-Men 97, Invincible, and Creature Commandos, we see a return to the 90s era comic art in animation, something that feels like its own thing, rather than aping the parts of others poorly. There's too many people who see 5 seconds of an anime and think they can make their own version, but they consider so much of anime "prOBLEmaTIC!" and they create this boring slurry. No one commits to the bit because the bit offends them somehow. If you’re going to do anime, you gotta go for it. Blood, dynamic angles, stuff that looks original, etc. If you were going to make a Diet Anime wrestling show, you should be required to marathon Tiger Mask W first. https://tubitv.com/series/1854/tiger-mask-w -

I'm not sure how wise that is. Mike Lazzo's whole thing was "Bring the funny or look for another job." Rebrands like this usually mean they lost support in key demographics.
