You’re making me wish DeMarco got an American studio to do his little train wreck.

I think, for better or worse, there’s a reason the most popular anime on Netflix are things like Baki, Kengan, and Record of Ragnarok. Although the considerable success of shows like My Happy Marriage and Delicious in Dungeon also show there’s more than one way to be successful. But when DeMarco gets the purse strings, we get FLCL Part 5: Jason Takes Manhattan, or a Rick and Morty anime that doesn’t appeal to anime fans or Rick and Morty fans. They have nearly 30 years of exhibit proof as to what has consistently worked and what hasn’t worked. But that vision of a “bespoke” action block, a goal that should be an admirable one so we don’t all drown in an endless deluge of Shounen Jump adaptations, has resulted in flop after flop after flop. Even so, DeMarco has avoided the Eye of Zaslav so far because Toonami is a niche block, but now he’s executive producing an animated Lord of the Rings film that by all rights should not exist, starring a Girlboss character so important to the lore Tolkien never even bothered to name her. If that bombs, I don’t see DeMarco being long for Toonami, because that will be a much bigger failure.

No you are not. DeMarco is the original Tumblr anime “improver” it seems, liking aesthetics but failing to understand the story while declaring tropes as “problematic” and the like. It’s clear for his love of FLCL, he failed to get why it worked.

Kind of curious how it does this week, since Netflix finally put up the Eternal movie, and with that they have the entirety of Crystal up.

I know some of the translations called her “Ms. Bloody Sunday.”

They hate it because it’s a Girlboss story like Rings of Power. I hate it because it ignores Tolkien’s mountain of lore to tell fanfic and retain film rights…like how Rings of Power uses appendixes to tell a fanfic story that ignores Tolkien. We are not the same.

Was debating where to put this but it’s clear this directly affects Adult Swim and Cartoon Network. What’s left of the latter anyway.

Time was during the dreg days of Adult Swim Action (2007-2012) the fear that the block would be canceled forever was due to economic factors, the Great Recession, and DeMarco's shit taste. Production of anime was down and if it didn't mean their punishing standards, well fuck you, besides a few years of SyFy and Ani-Monday, they were the only game in town and very willing to lord that fact over the viewers not willing to shell out $30 for 4 episodes of a show. Family Guy was going to take over Saturdays and that would be it. That was a tangible issue people could whine about. Get different shows. Loosen up your standards. Etc, etc. Now the problem is that cable is dying. Even sports are migrating to the streaming model, with the uber-service being blocked, sports included with Max, Peacock, and other subscriptions, not to mention the billions in losses on the traditional studios blamed squarely on the linear channels. Do the shows they get really matter if no one is watching the channel anymore? It's starting to feel like the house is falling down around us and we're arguing over the wallpaper.

I’m pretty sure all of those are off limits, but the last one especially since it’s likely exclusive to Amazon.

I would have saved double OP for Season 2 of the Netflix series. Granted I don’t know if Cartoon Network, much less Toonami will last that long.

This seems to reinforce my belief that this show was not designed for an ongoing story and that the Adult Swim Stoner Series as a whole is incompatible with longer form, more complex storytelling. Granted we’re three years from having enough Space Ghost comics to make a proper anime that lets him be a serious character again (the comics four issues in are surprisingly good) but that’s really the only Adult Swim original that would benefit from a switch to serialization and upgraded animation.
