  1. Meanwhile Robot Chicken got nominated in short form, but again, tough competition.
  2. I’d say the smart money is on Arcane, unless the board goes for the Simpsons’ legacy.
  3. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/2022-emmys-nominations-nominees-list-1235177772/ No big surprises but Squid Game is the first foreign language nomination for best drama.
  4. Can’t say this is too surprising given the large scale holding pattern. Hopefully the new Primals and Yashahime reverse the trend.
  5. You now know how all those hardcore fans felt…especially after the trainwreck that was Shenmue 3. It really is a shame. I was hoping that a hypothetical S2 could make that game’s narrative into something that moved the plot forward, to say nothing of going beyond it.
  6. Apparently the animator is a Powerhouse animation vet who worked on Castlevania. And yeah, you can see both the professional quality and some of the artistic flourishes of such.
  7. Crunchyroll made a big spectacle of getting the rights, and we all know they aren't playing nice with Toonami.
  8. https://www.animationmagazine.net/animated-people/exclusive-genndy-tartakovsky-discusses-the-prehistoric-perfection-of-primal-s2/ He is very clear he doesn’t want to be pigeonholed, going from Primal to a teen show to an R rated comedy for Sony.

  9. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2022-07-11/live-action-knights-of-the-zodiac-film-gets-first-look-at-comic-con-intl-in-san-diego/.187550 Apparently Sony will be showing the first look at the film at San Diego Comic Con. Given that Sony is essentially fumbling in the dark for a big franchise (Remember, these are the same people who released Morbius and keep trying to make movies out of C and D list Spider Man villains), I wouldn't be surprised if they think this can be a franchise lynchpin. Then again, they think Robotech can be their answer to Star Wars (which is why they threw money at Harmony Gold and Big West to make them both shut the fuck up), so I could easily see them thinking of Seiya as a big action movie tentpole.
  10. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/convention/2022/anime-expo/mappa-team-discuss-chainsaw-man-anime/.187194 Sadly no new footage at the Anime Expo panel, but they did confirm that there was actually no production committee involved, and that the show would be completely uncensored from the manga.
  11. If I had to guess, there’s probably a lot of awkwardness and weird feelings towards their former owner, and the idea of wanting Crunchyroll to be its own brand separate from their old WarnerMedia overlords means not doing business with them on their terrestrial channels. They’ll do business elsewhere, I believe their deal with Hulu from the FUNi era is still active, but providing their former owners content may be a bridge too far. Corporations are petty, petty beasts. I wouldn’t count on Jujutsu Kaisen for that reason, Crunchyroll is heavily invested in the series and distributed the prequel movie (the one that did a fairly good box office back in the spring).
  12. Inuyashiki 1-4 - All these years after the original manga, I still don’t know why the main villain, a serial killer, was shown to be a huge One Piece fan. Feels very petty. Contrast that with the old man singing the Astro Boy theme to fly, in what is a genuinely sweet moment. Nomad 1.
  13. If they have something new to the block, they will air that.
  14. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2022-07-11/one-piece-film-red-anime-gets-imax-screenings/.187561 This is an admitted surprise. Anyone going?
  15. I imagine it was much easier to renew an agreement in place for more episodes than to make a new one. Ushio and Tora is on HiDive of all places, but at least we know AMC/Sentai isn’t hostile towards Toonami.
  16. No actually, Twitter is full of female fans making that connection. White haired protagonist kept in line by female lead who doesn’t take his crap. I didn’t expect to go into the show expecting this, but here we are. As for the hyping, I was just taken aback by the fact that the show was getting a very pronounced reaction in a similar way to Baki, to Seven Deadly Sins, and others that were able to keep pace with live action shows. That is what makes me light up. To me it’s not about the service, it’s the idea that the show is on the same playing field as big name live action shows that makes me go “Wow.”
  17. The show is officially a worldwide hit. Which…good.
  18. Holy hell, an actual premiere! Although given how long the arc is going to run, it will probably have people making even more comparisons between InuYasha and Dark Schneider.
  19. Anyone been keeping up? It feels like the end has Kim trying to take Chuck’s place as The Worst, as well as showing us Cinnabon really is hell on earth.
  20. A lot of shows didn’t become big that people thought should have been. That’s show business. A block is just a delivery method of shows. Toonami was the best at it when you compare it to Rerun Central like Afternoon Adventures. Considering we live in a world where Bastard!! is somehow becoming a huge hit, something that would have been impossible in the ASA days (because it would have never gotten past Standards and Practices and I doubt DeMarco would have wanted it), and Primal won 5 Emmys, I say focus our the shows and where they will get the most eyeballs.
  21. You really seem offended by the idea of someone wanting to get his work out to the widest possible audience. The guy who's won a ton of Emmy awards, wanting people to see his work, is somehow offensive to you. ...You know why I like Netflix being in the anime game despite numerous missteps? It's because they don't segregate their anime to some deep, smelly corner. They will recommend you anime to watch if you watch shows with similar genres of themes. Watched The Witcher? Here's Bastard!! Like martial arts movies? You'll love Kengan Ashura! Fantasy shows? Seven Deadly Sins. Etc, etc. One Piece probably got more viewers on Netflix than it ever did on Toonami because they didn't go "You only belong here, in this specific corner, for this specific timeslot." Genndy knows that, he knows his work can appeal to a very wide audience as stereotypes about animation fall apart, stereotypes you seem desperate to want the networks to enforce despite their lack of ability to do so.
  22. Even DeMarco himself has gone on record that he hates the idea of a Bebop sequel (when he was crapping on the idea of a LA version). After the disaster of Netflix Bebop, I think we all concur.
  23. I’m referring to RWBY Ice Queendom, which is what happens when someone actually animated the damn show properly.
  24. To be fair, given Shenmue’s history, it’s kind of fitting.
  25. He’s been pretty clear about it. He thinks his work can appeal on a mass level, and doesn’t think Toonami can do that, especially in its current state. There are anime and action shows that break into the public consciousness, but they need strong word of mouth and good time slots (or streaming) to pull that off. There’s a reason Primal’s trailer specifically mentions all the Emmys it won. That’s proof of mainstream acceptance. Acceptance he feels Toonami isolation wouldn’t get it. There’s also the fact he doesn’t want to get pigeonholed. Probably why he keeps saying his next project with Sony is going to be a raunchy animated comedy.
