Sorry if this one is long-winded. At some point, I wrote a few posts worth of material and decided to consolidate them into one post since they all involve the Labubu. I don’t know why but I associate Labubu’s with the same pure evil that encapsulates 2025. Like why do you look so happy? Everything’s on fire, and you’re fucking smiling. It’s like you’re getting everything you ever wanted as society collapses and enshittification kicks into high gear. The fact that it’s a luxury item provokes me even more. It’s like you’re taunting the people who buy you. “Haha, you spent your hard earned money on an eyesore that looks at you like you’re a sucker for having FOMO.” In a year where abject cruelty is treated like a virtue, the rise of Labubu’s feel like a reflection of the contempt our society has for anyone who gets swindled. “Wanna feel relevant like you actually want to keep up with the world around you? Tie your personality to a luxury product and live vicariously through your reckless spending, teehee.” It’s not so different from sports betting apps that prey upon habits and addictions to associate enjoying sports with gambling on sports. Of course, Mike Tyson will think you’re a badass for wasting two paychecks on a parlay that went south. Of course, you’re treating yourself to a simple pleasure in life if you throw down $300-$1000 on a limited edition Labubu that looks like Tony Tony Chopper. And these are “collectibles” too. At least most Beanie Babies or Funko are cheap enough at regular stores. Tying your collectibles to limited quantities and blind box discounts is even more predatory.

Got to see The Substance and rewatch Scream on Halloween. I was a little bummed out by The Substance cause it seems like they really wanted to dunk on Demi for having to live vicariously through her younger self to win back any respect from the crappy men in charge of the aerobics morning show. Honestly I was stun-locked by why a morning aerobics show needs a younger actress at the helm. Saying Demi is too old for a televised aerobics show is outrageous when those kinds of shows exclusively cater towards elderly people who like to stay active after the morning news. I can suspend my disbelief on a body horror de-aging serum, but a TV aerobics show recasting its aging star to be relevant with the gooner crowd felt like the movie was honking its clown nose at me. The Scream rewatch went pretty well. I was watching it with someone who never saw it so seeing their reaction to all the big moments even after knowing the twist was very special.

I’ve been behind on updating my boosters, but I wear a mask whenever there’s a COVID spike in my area. I’m also an introvert so social distancing is pretty easy.
