We often think the next internet will be virtual reality based. The matrix, essentially. It will "progress" to the point that no one will ever leave their 4x8 sleeping pod. We'll all just be avatars in an experience machine.

No. That's kind of the point. We're more likely to get depressed from watching an anime that depicts life exactly as dismal and abrasive as it truly is. In part because life is so very dismal and abrasive, but also because why are We wasting Our time watching that?
There are lots of chemists that also do not give a shit about wood.
There are also lots of non-chemists that do give a shit about wood.
What is the relevance of these two subsets?
We don't believe people are capable of sharing embarrassing things. Maybe things that they were embarrassed about at the time, but nothing that they currently are, because if they truly were, they wouldn't actually share it.
Depends on how you define change. Like, a person who has not just thrown up a little in their mouth is clearly different from a person who has.
But at the end of the day, it's not a very meaningful difference.
Yeah. We actually have doubts about its structural integrity, too. But that's not as easy to judge from a photo.
Further, a throne is meant to impose majesty. And being luxurious, in addition to its own benefits, furthers that goal.
