It’s for sure going to harm its performance. I don’t expect it to crater the entire block, but they likely paid straight out the asshole to get this locked down and are probably going to get numbers comparable to peak Superman. Then there are two ways that goes, either they recognize it’s pointless to wait on big names, or they decide acquiring shows at all is pointless since no matter what they air it caps at about 270k viewers.

Or it’s not an error and they are using the fact that Demon Slayer’s title takes up two lines to quietly slip it in like they did last year by using the DST hour to make it appear to quick lookers that the block was the same length. Error? Maybe. Intentionally hiding double Naruto for no good reason? No chance.

Just a thought, Scavengers has been received incredibly well by reviewers and audience alike, perhaps they aren’t in a rush to get it on cable now that they know it can carry its own weight. The only reason it would air on AS at all is to shill it to people who aren’t giving it a chance, but it seems plenty of people are giving it a chance with no extra push. Would not be surprised at all if Max wants to keep that exclusive for the foreseeable future just as a Max exclusive draw.

Being honest, I’m a little grateful we are even in a situation where it feels like a show is being shafted. The entire year has been nothing, so being in a scenario where it feels like multiple shows could be the lead show feels good. Personally I think this is just gonna be a one week thing, DS will cut down to one slot the following week and Dr Stone will slip into 12:30. The open slot will either go back to OP, or be cut to give us a clean 12-2 runtime. I think DS in the lead is the right choice just on popularity alone. Even with Demarco pushing some viewers away by telling everyone they would never air it, it’s still leagues more popular and might even be able to scratch that 300k mark we haven’t seen in a long long time. Even if DS does good, no single show is a magic cure-all to Toonami’s problems. Yea, this is a nice pickup, but if you polled the audience on if they wanted a consistent year of rotating B shows, or a year of reruns and stalling just for one part of DS, I don’t think DS would win. It’s concerning for next year, are they gonna blow the whole wad in January for the next part too? Agree that it’s not a good look for them that spent this entire year begging at Sony’s feet for a tiny scrap instead of calling Sentai. We can officially mark this year down as only have 3 pickups and 0 non sequel shows. A first time low. A saving grace here is unlike 2018, they aren’t all copy and pastes of Naruto and OP. Dr Stone is light on the battle aspect, and Demon Slayer is right on the brink of fitting an older skewing magazine. Would I like more variety? Absolutely. But with Demarco’s shonen obsession and refusal to branch outside of sequels, this is about as diverse as we can ask for. I’ll never grasp their attitude towards One Piece. In theory, if their relationship with Toei is as good as they claim, they should have no shortage of episodes. Perhaps the renewal period is coming up and they aren’t going to? Or maybe we are overthinking it and it will just fill in the time left open if DS trims down to one episode. Absolutely, I believe I said this when they got MHA as well. When CR brings a brand new deal to the table, we can consider them an ally. Until then, it’s best to assume they are begrudgingly giving up shows because AS found some loophole to leverage their old deals to get new seasons.

Well, that wasn’t on my bingo sheet. Know why? Demarco said they wouldn’t fucking air it so I watched it on my own. Note it’s specifically the Mugen Train arc, which is only a meager 7 episodes. Thanks for stalling the entire year to spooge the entire budget on a half season Demarco! I assume the double up is to make sure we get it all squeezed into 2023. Also notice on the graphic, one less slot. I told y’all a cut was coming. Not a big fan of the block ending on a :30 though.

Honestly I’d love it if Shippuden stayed doubled up for the rest of its run. You are right, anyone who has stayed dedicated to the Toonami run for Shippuden deserve some kind of reward, and reaching that fabled finish line a little faster is the least they can do. But that’s where my faith in Demarco ends. He has long been a believer in making things last as long as possible, and right now when the options are incredibly slim, it actually makes sense. Even if they do get it off faster, for what? They didn’t get a damn thing in 2023, no reason to believe 2024 will be different. Rushing off Shippuden is something that would have me believe a time cut is certain, cause they don’t got nothing to replace that anchor. There are even quite a few sunk cost fallacy fans sticking with Toonami purely to see Naruto end since they were here from the start. Once it does end, there are going to be a lot of people who don’t have any ties left to the block.

So then the English version isn’t on CR then? Weird but they aren’t completely erased at least. It’s a hard challenge to meet. If the rules are too forgiving, companies will mass write off everything that isn’t their top shows and pick them back up later. I think the way it is now is fine, it forces companies to decide they are absolutely certain they are done with a show before they write it off. Before Zaslav, CN and AS weren’t really writing anything off. If I’m remembering right, the last write off was Thundercats/SBT/Beware the Batman.

Not surprised about the cartoons, but I am surprised about Fena and Black Lotus. The way I interpreted what Demarco said about them was that AS washed their hands of them because they couldn’t come to an agreement with Crunchyroll. I assumed that meant Crunchyroll would still keep them in their backlog of forgettable originals. Do we know if any other CR originals are being erased? Or is it exclusively the AS associated ones? Id say this should probably be taken as an early warning sign for Shenmue which will probably meet this same fate soon.

You are right, nothing is actually stopping them from doing so. But like I said, I have the tiniest bit of faith in Demarco recognizing they have laid FLCL on pretty heavy this year and it’s time for it to take a break so it doesn’t grow permanent audience animosity like Primal S2. Even the Shoegaze marathon promo calls it a “final curtain call”. Backlog wise, they have enough to fill slots up, but that’s the wrong question. Sure, AoT could fill up slots for 6 months or more than a year, but is that actually going to put asses in seats to justify making bumpers and stuff for it? Or could they just thoughtlessly throw Futurama in that time for the same or better returns without the Toonami packaging legwork? Full disclosure, I don’t think a cut is coming, but I do find the secrecy around 11/11 suspect now that we know IGPX isn’t anywhere close to being ready for a full run.

Stuff has been weird the past few weeks. Going from stretched, to cropped to cropped a different way to what I believe is now the correct way. Hopefully they stop messing with it now that it’s right.

Hmm, that’s not what I expected, I guess that explains why Toonami is even getting DST this year in the first place. If they were gonna do something simple like that, they could have just given us the full schedule rather than announcing Dr Stone without a graphic or timeslot. Naruto simply cannot keep up this 2 per week pace, they have already lost about 3 months worth of episodes. Here are the two possibilities I see. 12 - Scavengers/New acquired show 12:30 - Dr Stone 1 - One Piece 1:30 - One Piece 2 - Naruto 2:30 - any rerun but FLCL Or, using their trickery from last year 12 - Dr Stone 12:30 - One Piece 1 - One Piece 1:30 - Naruto There is also a mix and match option where they do add Scavengers, but still cut 30 minutes

Oh, it’s a full 12, I misunderstood the article about it and thought it was only 6. With that, there is no real urgency to get it on the schedule then, and I agree with you that it’s better to have it run with Dr Stone so they end the same time. With their dub capabilities now, they could have the special dubbed before Thanksgiving TBH. Then either air it then over a pointless marathon, or they slide it in sometime in December.

Normally I wouldn’t, but there are just a bunch of abnormalities here pointing to one. A Saturday schedule update, Dr Stone announcement with no timeslot or graphic, Naruto’s rapidly declining episode count making further double ups seem unlikely, just a lot of signs pointing to there being a little more to this than what they have told us. And for now, I’m still leaning towards midnight Scavengers being the answer, they will just run an episode before the Thanksgiving marathon to get it all in before 2024. So it still won’t be two acquired premiers, which is usually the thing we never get. Max probably just had an embargo on when they can reveal it, and if they said Dr Stone at 12:30 that unintentionally reveals too much.

I feel like if double Naruto or more reruns was the answer, they would have dropped a graphic for the 11th. Announcing Dr Stone here was a clear “we know this schedule sucks hard please don’t quit” move, but no graphic makes it feel like they haven’t finalized the 11th yet and may have one more surprise waiting.

It’s times like this I wish we still got full ratings, airing the same thing back to back is just a slap in the face. Toonami doesn’t actually run during DST, they could have just aired 3 episodes of IGPX then, even making it 5 wouldn’t have made a huge dent in its future role as likely our 2:30 rerun. What’s most interesting here is they low key announced Dr Stone AGAIN rather than putting any hype to it. Last time it was slipped on a schedule bundle without a word, this time it’s an extra sentence tacked onto a shitty schedule. No timeslot and no schedule graphic, does that mean they have something else? I suppose Scavengers could still fit if they run an episode ahead of a couple marathons.

I know our prevailing theory right now is Scavengers premier on Thursday with a Toonami rerun on Saturday, but the online schedule for November 2 is up on TV Passport, and Scavengers is nowhere to be seen. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean anything, it could premier on a different day, or AS could change the schedule before this point, something they are not averse to doing. But, it does give us an excuse to theorize an alternative schedule to end the year on. Smart money is still on Dr Stone, without Scavengers, likely our lead show, but that does leave room to squeeze in one more show and have a slightly less pathetic send off for 2023. Fridays have been our Facebook news days lately, perhaps a big reveal in the morning?

As brainless as I think Demarco is, I do think he has a little bit of sense to recognize that the audience is FLCL’d out at this point. 2 runs of the original, 1 of Prog and Alt, and 2 runs of Grunge and Shoegaze is an FLCL overload. Maybe they tag back in 6 months from now, but I don’t think we are gonna see another loop this year. Reruns always seem to be a wildcard, now and then something cool falls in their lap to play, others they just throw whatever on because they know no one will watch it anyway. Wouldn’t be surprised if they opted to wait on using Superman for marathon fodder until next year when the new season is closer to airing. Makes for an easy two night marathon before the new season premiers, not on Toonami of course.

Can’t even blame the voice change, the episode itself was just bad. Mr Poopybutthole is a funny side character, not someone who should have an entire episode dedicated to them. On top of that the episode just lacked humor, and is falling into the late stage Fox show rut of just shoving in celebrity appearances with no thought to them at all. Unfortunately, the fanbase of this show are easily pleased morons. The next 8 episodes could be equally bad, so long as that 10th one inches the Rick prime story forward, the season will end with an 80% minimum.

Demarco confirms Scavengers will get a Toonami run, though if it was airing 2 weeks from now he doesn’t seem to be acting like it. That said, in recent years he doesn’t seem to have a clue what scheduling is doing till they do it.
