  1. Abysmal. Demarco is gonna have some explaining to do to the higher ups about why they had to bend over backwards to secure this pickup.
  2. It doesn’t bother me so much that they all died, such is life for a character in this series, but more that it failed to build an attachment with the audience for any of the villagers. Most of them are nameless, goofy monster things. The few that do have names just don’t do anything memorable. And the one we are exposed to the most says literally one word over and over again, and has huge ass cheeks that really make it hard to take him seriously. So we reach the end of the season, and everyone is dead and it’s more a sigh of relief because them being dead means we are finally moving forward to something else. The manga releases chapters very slow so I can see why the anime staff wants to make as few cuts as possible, but this taking an entire season really made it feel like it was just spinning it’s wheels till the finale.
  3. Buddy you read every single word of my post. You have no retort, so you are trying to fall back on “h-heh, too long, d-didn’t read that”. This is fair. It builds up so much over the season just to remind the audience that the abyss sux. The sense of adventure isn’t there because they stay in one place the whole time.
  4. “Sir, you aren’t allowed to enjoy that manga, the author sniffs his Nanachi dolls daily. SIR! LISTEN TO ME SIR YOU CANT DO THAT I DISAGREE! IM GOING TO HAVE TO CANCEL YOU!” Thats the behavior you are defending right now. And considering the person who started this has had to go ghost mode on twitter, I’m gonna take a wild guess that his take on the situation didn’t go over well. As a “very little known author”, of course you do that. Judging by how you act, the couple hundred people that follow you are probably exactly like you. If you step one pinkie toe out of line, your tiny following will drop you in a heartbeat. I don’t know a single thing about K-pop, but most of these guys seem to be in the 7-8 figure fan counts. If a couple hundred thousand drop him because of his favorite manga, I doubt he would even notice. And again, based on the response, seems like his fanbase came to a very aggressive defense of him. Manga is written primarily for its eastern audience. All too often to people from the west try to force their western sensibilities on manga, none of which is a positive improvement. Just look at the wasteland of crap that the west puts out these days. If you want more of that, by all means consume it. Someone has to. But don’t try to drag manga down in the mud with you, nor the people who enjoy it. I will reiterate, Made in Abyss was one of the most popular anime of 2017. That’s a very hard title to take for something that isn’t Shonen Jump. If “weird shit” was an issue, it wouldn’t be sitting on that title.
  5. That’s why I remain skeptical for now. I enjoy tossing ideas around, but I’m also being realistic that Lycoris may end up being a one off thing and we go right back to how things were when it ends.
  6. And? If you don’t want to watch/read it, don’t. You don’t have to drag down others who do. Imagine trying to shame someone for enjoying a series that a gaggle of normies voted as the best anime of the year at the Crunchyroll awards. It doesn’t get more casual than that.
  7. Made in Abyss is actually very faithful to the source material. Probably the only real censorship is the anime doesn’t show nipples. The movie does though, not directly though. But said scene also isn’t direct in the manga either. What does this person need to be informed about? “Stop liking what I don’t like!”? Things like this are why there is such animosity towards cancel culture.
  8. I can absolutely see Mashle making the cut. It’s got a new season starting in January. Yea it kinda feels like One Punch Man but he is a wizard now (but not really lol) but that’s a formula that just keeps working. GGO obviously just because the block is associated with SAO so significantly. Engage Kiss is incredibly action dense which to me made the mid action kiss scenes not even noticeable. Bro pipes a nun like halfway in though (like actually pipes not the will they won’t they crap) so I don’t think that one would get the Demarco stamp of approval. I have seen requests for Kaguya ever since the first season. It’s never too late to give a new genre a try and this one is so widely liked the risk of it tanking is pretty low. I know at this point Madoka is pushing 13 years old, but I still think it deserves a Toonami run. It’s one of the defining anime of the 2010s. If Demarco needs to scratch the “old” itch, better something like this than another recycled 90s show. If it goes over well they could air Magia Record. Since they can’t afford movies, they can never make everyone mad with Rebellion. I enjoyed Darwin’s Game, but I think that might be tied up on Netflix. If not, it has my vote. Toonami has never touched video game adaptations, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think Nier Automata wouldn’t be a great pick. 2b is a popular enough character that people will recognize but may not actually know anything about which I feel would drive some engagement. I don’t care what anyone says, I like battle harems. So The Asterisk War and The Irregular at Magic High School has my support. Toonami viewers want to see action and tits, so those would be ideal 1am time filler. I believe Irregular only recently got a dub, so it would be good promotion for Aniplex. It’s also one of the few I have yet to watch myself. The Misfit of Demon King Academy is comedy gold, one of those shows where you aren’t sure if it’s supposed to be a parody or not. I’d love to see this dude spin an entire castle on his finger like a basketball on basic cable. Unfortunately, I’m only seeing S2 on this list, so they don’t have both I guess? Can’t have two without one. I could go on but I’ll just stop here. My concern for the future isn’t lack of options, if Aniplex is playing ball, they have plenty of toys to play with. I have two main ones. 1. How thick is the Toonami budget for 2024? No money, no shows unless Aniplex just gives things to the block. They might offer deals but I think the era of just getting things for free is long over. 2. Is Lycoris Recoil a sign of Demarco finally broadening his horizons, or is it our bi-annual oddball pick that sneaks by to the confusion of everyone? If this is just a pick he liked that fell in his lap, that’s not going to be a recurring thing. If we reach the spring where these new pickups start wrapping up and they all get actual acquired replacements, that might open me up to the need for more time just to squeeze on some of the obligations.
  9. Guess this guy didn’t get the memo that despite its content, Made in Abyss is certified normiecore. Should have tried to pin a more controversial show on the guy.
  10. I disagree about expansion. Right now, we are eating really good and the schedule feels like it’s about to burst, but will that last? I highly doubt it. Dr Stone will be outta here in February, so they already have a little room to play with. Stone, DS and Lycoris all will be out of here before Naruto ends, so they have lots of upcoming space to play with, and even with a more cooperative Aniplex, I don’t think they can plug all those holes with acquired content. Stuff like Scavengers and Superman will serve the same purpose as filler shows did this year, to fill time and save money. The only thing that is really lost in a 3 hour schedule is the consistent double One Piece, which while fans enjoy, still eats up budget and non fans or fence riders would rather see that slot given to another show. I don’t think there is a scenario where we get to keep a flow of new shows and keep double OP. As for reruns, those just pop in as needed and aren’t a significant priority. Mugen Train will surely be the New Years or Christmas marathon, and if they think it still has juice in it they can cycle it again later in the year after it’s rested for a time. They presumably hold the license for one full year, so there is plenty of time to cycle those one at a time. Weird list considering we had Made in Abyss last year. Is he implying he didn’t actually watch it before adding it to the block? Same with Mob. I still stand by Lycoris being a really weird pick for him considering his attitude towards similar content. But that being said, he does say he loves Shield Hero, and among all the isekai he could pick he liked one of the most controversial ones. Mob isn’t Aniplex. Right now it seems like only shows held by Aniplex have a pathway onto the block.
  11. We are on a hell of a roll right now. Glad Aniplex is breaking all this news now rather than the Demarco classic 2 weeks notice.
  12. One more interesting observation about this show. I’ll admit, im giving myself a crash course on it as we speak, but it seems that the whole theme is girl protagonist with guns. 1. It’s not the typical dreck from shonen jump with a male protag who is the chosen one 2. Its got guns, allegedly something Demarco had an issue with in recent years Who picked this show for the block? Because it sure as shit wasn’t Demarco. Or did hell freeze over and we are about to witness a Demarco redemption arc? Gun Gale Online is also an Aniplex title, if Demarco truly pulled the stick out of his ass, could we possibly be seeing that next year too?
  13. Just for the hell of it, here’s a theoretical schedule given what we know. I’d say if it were replacing Demon Slayer, it could just start the first week. Since it’s not, im taking that as a pointer towards more Demon Slayer. 12:00a - Demon Slayer 12:30a - Dr Stone 1:00a - Lycoris Recoil 1:30a - One Piece 2:00a - Naruto Shippuden 2:30a - IGPX As expected, One Piece works as our flex slot. We need the space, so it trims down. If they can’t keep the good momentum going after Dr Stone ends, they simply bump Lycoris up to 12:30 and give OP double duty again. Actually, if that ends up being the case, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Lycoris start its run at 12:30, as Dr Stone would only have 2-3 more episodes left. Whatever the case, im just glad to see some evidence that they aren’t dicking around going into the new year. Maybe Naruto leaving is the kick in the pants they needed to get their shit together.
  14. Bruh what the fuck is this, unexpected and unpredictable Toonami news? Something we all didn’t see coming from 6 miles away? Am I awake right now? Bit of an odd start date though, unless they are going to wedge in the AoT special and maybe even roll right into the next season of Demon Slayer. This has been creeping up my backlog chart, thankfully I kept telling myself “eh maybe later”. Anyway, the true gem of this announcement is that we finally got a non sequel show. 2023 still goes down as getting zero, but 2024 is starting off strong with one. But with Aniplex opening their door here, our possibilities expand quite a bit. This news isn’t even on the Facebook yet, did Aniplex get a little ahead of themselves on the reveal?
  15. I don’t think it’s a matter of people wanting to wait. Demarco told everyone multiple times it was never going to happen. At that point, not watching it is just being foolish, what are you even waiting for? The Toonami audience has always been pretty loyal to a show running on the block. If we weren’t repeatedly told it was never going to happen, I think a lot of people would have backlogged it.
  16. Idk about that. With no other context, yea it’s decent, or more like average. But considering this is the show we sacrificed the quality of the block for 10 months for? Those numbers are garbage. The midnight FLCL rerun 2 weeks ago got 200/0.09. This is barely better and probably has 3-4 acquired shows worth of budget sunk into it. Age? Popularity? Demarco telling people it would never air? Combination of them all? Whatever the case, they gambled hard on this and it looks like they only stand to break even.
  17. I hope you like ketchup man. There aren’t a lot of constants with Toonami scheduling, but taking a two week break at the end of the year is one that has been extremely consistent. The 23rd is way too close to Christmas to blow any kind of premier on, and they always stick another one the week after.
  18. I think an ideal scenario for them is AoT right at midnight. But that won’t do as it would leave Demon Slayer hanging. So they will settle for 12:30 and get an extra week out of Dr Stone. Personally I don’t think they really care about how far behind they get. Less is better of course, but I don’t think they are going to sweat it. Remember the looped episode of the last part of the season? There was an easy way to fix that and keep it on pace, but they took the most roundabout nonsense way they could think of and ended up slowing its run down.
  19. I agree and I wish they understood that the block airs for 45ish weeks per year, and almost all 45 of those weeks need to be decent. The way things are, 7 weeks will be slightly above average and 38 were subpar to downright garbage. Occasional spurts of activity don’t make up for stretches of bad that are this long. They are going to get tested immediately when the new year starts as they will have a slot to fill. Even if more Demon Slayer is on the table, that makes me nervous for later in the year where instead of backloading the budget in 2023, they will frontload it in 2024 and we will have another fall stretch of nothing. They definitely need to get more realistic on what they can get. I don’t think they just wanted WfM or Bleach, they probably put money aside thinking it was a sure thing. And now with Mugen Train airing, we know that no matter how many times they are told no, they keep trying to get the same things. An entire year without a single fresh title, just sequel after sequel. They have plenty of schedule filler crutches for next year too. Scavengers, Superman S2, Rick and Morty anime, that’s 30+ weeks of content right there. Then there are originals Ninja Kamui, Lazarus, Uzumaki(lol), I think the first two are 12 episodes each. That’s enough backlogged stuff to coast on for the whole year while only picking up 1-2 shows and saving most of the years budget for a futile play for Dragon Ball Diaper. The only major shift on the lineup we will see is Naruto will no longer be around to be reliable schedule filler. In theory, that’s good news, an extra slot to play with to cycle more content. In reality, they will most likely piss away the opportunity.
  20. I’ll throw in with you on this gamble 12 - Demon Slayer 12:30 - AoT part 2 2:30 - IGPX Iirc it’s right on the edge of being 90 minutes so I think it’s gonna need a 2 hour slot.
  21. Earlier in the year quite a few people speculated it might be one of the 2023 pickups but that didn’t come to pass. Personally, I’d rather not. The new anime butchers the source material with modern day sensibilities, and without the fanservice it’s a pretty mid series. Air shows by their own merit, not just who wrote them.
  22. Well they don’t have a choice, a week and a half ago they added IGPX into the weekly rotation, it wasn’t just gonna stop after rerunning 1-2
  23. I think One Piece is going to exist as the exception, not the norm in regards to live action anime adaptions.
  24. No shock there, the leaked scripts and artwork made it pretty clear there was no “season 2” and they had 20 episodes from the jump that they just split in half. Standard operating procedure for shows in 2023.
  25. So some good news, Zap2it is showing Shippuden at 2am on the 26th, so it looks like we are free and clear on Thanksgiving this year. I have to assume the past 3 dead weeks plays some part in that choice.
