  1. If it can just get through its run without huge stretches of being boring, it can take the crown for best original thus far. That’s where every original so far has blown it, it reaches a point where I don’t care and the characters just drone on. At least mindless violence is something to have a laugh about. Real ones watched Akudama Drive for Hoodlum, this entry is all wrong.
  2. I wonder why Entertainment District isn’t hitting when Mugen Train did. It’s got one more chance to turn around but let’s hope Ninja Kamui hits a little better with the midnight crowd. More importantly, look at that huge spike in viewers Lycoris had. It was one slot away from being the highest rated show on Toonami this week. It’s been a very long time since we have seen a later show have a sizable spike over shows before it. Hopefully Demarco takes notice that the audience actually does like getting some niche shows now and then.
  3. Probably the most damaging thing were his interviews about Prog and Alt. Outright admitting he thought things in the original were a problem that needed changed in HIS version destroyed his credibility for any anime he would be involved with. Uzumaki has been given impossible odds with all the delays. Even if it’s great, people will shrug and ask why such a short project took so long. The short clip they showed didn’t make it seem like it’s going to have the animation quality that leaves a years long impact on viewers.
  4. I actually did an archive check on /a/, which I’ll admit is not always 100% accurate, and the singular thread I found about Ninja Kamui specifically was from 2022. And it didn’t even getting any discussion, basically just “ok”. There are other sporadic posts in JJK related threads discussing the show being part of the reason Sungwho Park was leaving, but no actual talk about the show itself. Basically no traction at all on 4chan. Even in the Toonami specific threads, its first real discussion happened last week. And surprisingly, a lot more positivity about it than expected. Will be interesting to see if /a/ bothers following it once it starts. ANN is where all the normies go and reference, so if they think it’s doodoo then that won’t be good for the show. Same goes for MAL. You couldn’t pay me to go wade through Resetera, but knowing how they operate, negative opinions are not allowed so I doubt anyone there has said anything bad about the show. Reddit has mixed opinions, obviously the Toonami sub all love it and think it’s the best because they aren’t allowed to wrongthink, but the slightly less biased anime sub is mixed. Some are optimistic because of JJK, while others are concerned with western influences. If you get away from Toonami circles on twitter, optimism for the show is not high. I guess we will see what happens, but the effort required to find discussion about the show outside of Toonami circles really highlights their issues with advertising. That aside, seeing as an abortion like Grunge was able to do OK, I’m not too worried about this flopping.
  5. I have seen a little bit of discussion about the show on other sites, but this is how it usually boils down. ”Ninja Kamui? Huh well it looks like it might be good” ”Says here Adult Swim/Jason Demarco is involved?” ”Oh yikes nevermind, guaranteed shit” It’s genuinely amusing seeing how toxic Demarco’s association with a project is in the non Toonami anime community. This show could end up being decent, but a lot of people have already written it off because Demarco had his fingers in it. I agree their advertising sucks. Even if they waited to start running ads, I think they should have gotten it announced earlier. Give it some time to get some buzz spreading outside of AS circles. The entire point of originals was to lure in viewers who didn’t have a reason to watch the block before, and they have been terrible at showcasing these shows elsewhere.
  6. This is the most important point for Lycoris. It held onto Dr Stone pretty tight, and only dropped 0.01 from the lead. The overall performance of the block was subpar, but Lycoris worked with what was available. It’s also not unusual in recent years to see January and February kinda suck and then things course correct somewhat in the spring. And the good news is, if Demon Slayer keeps sucking, it’s only gonna be the lead for two more weeks anyway before we swap over to Ninja Kamui.
  7. I mean, can we really blame Lycoris when Demon Slayer started the night with a near record low? That’s where all the issues lie. Id assume a big issue for Demon Slayer is the promo they ran for the ENTIRE week was for the wrong damn episode. Some people might of panicked and bailed thinking Toonami was airing the wrong episode. And we certainly can’t write off that the episode itself is kind of a snooze set up episode. Next weeks is actually being advertised properly and looks to have a little more meat to it so hopefully things turn around.
  8. Yea, I wouldn’t hold your breath on this doing well. R&M has been on a steady downward slide in relevance, and most anime fans aren’t going to consider this anime. Soon as those subs start scrolling, a lot of people will tune out, and the anime crowd probably won’t show up in the first place unless it’s tacked onto Toonami when they are already here. Smiling Friends has got to be close. Luckily for them Ninja Kamui is coming, it may not be a Sunday show, but at least they can say they have something new on the air.
  9. They seem pretty set in their opinion that subs tank viewership. Demarco’s plan to premier Uzumaki subbed in 2023 seemed to get vetoed pretty fast. Honestly I’m surprised they are even giving it a try. Rick and Morty anime will likely premier in a fairly decent timeslot, so we will get some kind of measure how subbed content does at a better time. This gives me hope that if we do get stuck with Rick and Morty anime reruns, they are gonna get parked at 3am. Whether 3am is properly Toonami now, or they just advertise it with the block because no one but Toonami fans would care about a subbed run remains to be seen.
  10. Huh, well that’s an unexpected development. Between the nature of being subbed and being a rerun from a few hours ago, I have my doubts it will do well, but it’s an interesting experiment. I wonder if it will actually be ON Toonami, or if this is another stunt where they say it is, but don’t actually adjust the bumpers accordingly. I wonder if the subbed run will count as a “new” show in regards to the ratings, cause I’m sure we are all curious how this does. Let’s hope for its sake, the show is actually good. Imagine if they tried this with Fena or Black Lotus snoozefests.
  11. I guess that will depend on if the recaps are considered part of the season or not. Where I’m looking, they say S7 starts May 4th with Stars and Stripes. So if that’s the case, we might be in a bit of a pickle if we assume CR wants at least 3 weeks to get moving. If MHA is locked in, we might see them do what they did back with S5 where they reran X amount of episodes at the front of the block before S6 could start. If Swordsmith isn’t in the cards for them, that would probably be their cleanest way while also quietly signaling the smart audience members that S7 is en route.
  12. Since it’s airing alongside LatAm AS, the Toonami run won’t be able to take any pointless breaks, so we should be marathon free until it ends. What I expect them to do is either put the show replacing DS or Lycoris on double duty for a week or two, or sliding the Ninja Kamui marathon to the week after it ends. That may end up being a “pay it forward” type of deal on Memorial Day where we just don’t have one that weekend. Similar to how in 2023 we skipped the thanksgiving marathon due to the 3 weeks off we had in Oct/Nov already. Something else to consider is it may end up boiling down to how the show actually does. If it flops, they may not want a repeat of the Fena marathon.
  13. Just as expected. Strange that they don’t plug Toonami in the post. Perfect opportunity to get some more eyes on the block. Hasn’t even gone up on the Facebook page yet. I assume it’s set to auto post at 7pm.
  14. I just hope you are right about Boruto, my man. NEVER underestimate what a fucking idiot Demarco can be. If the call falls to him and no one else, it will come back just like One Piece shouldn’t have. If he has to run it by someone else, they should slap it down based on the audience hating it and it being a waste of money.
  15. One of the characters in the show during the promo said it that way too. I don’t care what anyone says, they are pronouncing it wrong.
  16. Even the most optimistic fans don’t think Toonami is ever going to reach Wano in the first place. For the foreseeable future this shouldn’t be much of a concern, but it does look like Toei is getting out of the stone age in regards to media distribution, if the live action keeps doing numbers, I could see Netflix making a play for a tighter window of exclusivity and Toei actually going for it. But again, probably not a concern for at least a couple years, the block will have plenty of other problems to address long before that’s an issue.
  17. I think it might have been closer to the summer. Adult Swim was announcing something new on every commercial break when it happened, so it was some kind of big event.
  18. Always a weird feeling when we are about to sign off on a show for the last time that has been with the block for such a long time. I still remember the surprise on air reveal they did when they picked up S1. The hype was real.
  19. Oh, so it is. I don’t know what series I was thinking of. No matter, I still see it as a strong contender for the block. May not be shonen, but they have been leaning on Lupin for a long time so it’s hardly something fresh, especially since it’s one of those shows the audience seems to glaze over whenever they pick it up. And the only reason Urusei is ever suggested is because it’s Rumiko content, so another tired, “safe” pick. I want to see more stuff like Lycoris that is completely unpredictable. Don’t even care if it’s shonen, at least Mashle is fun and aside from a brief discussion at its release, not something most viewers have on their prediction lists.
  20. Mashle is my most likely pick that Aniplex would want to promote and Demarco would agree to. It’s the exact brand of non-Jump shonen that the block has gone for in the past, and its OPM/Black Clover mash (heh) up vibes are sure to hit with the audience. It’s just now starting it’s S2, so maybe a replacement for Lycoris? Depends how consistent Aniplex wants their block presence to be I suppose. Lycoris S2 will definitely be coming too, but probably later in the year. If luck is on our side, I think Swordsmith is doable, especially now that it’s yesterdays news with the latest season incoming. That said, Hashira Training before 2025 seems a bit too optimistic, even with a cooperative Aniplex. But for sure on the short list of 2025 pickups.
  21. I think it just boils down to preserving budget (for new stuff like IGPX) or just outright forgetfulness in regards to something like Demon Slayer last week. They probably figure it’s 3am and very few people will notice or care. And it’s not like this practice is new, how many times has a Rick and Morty short been on a schedule graphic only to air after the later? Blum costs money every time and it’s just not worth it for one off bumpers in the dead of night. I’ll bet post Toonami hours fade in and out of action content. Perhaps fading out less often now that AS has steady supply of in house action material they can keep on loop there. I know it’s off brand for me, but I’m actually a little optimistic that we can at minimum avoid the worst case scenario. If Aniplex stays as supportive as they currently are, they just have to push for one more show they want promoted and the trajectory for the whole rest of the year is saved. It certainly helps feelings of optimism to start a year on day 1 great. 2022 was a pointless drip feed of news week to week, and 2023 had no action for 5 months. We knew Jan 2024 was gonna be stacked in Nov 2023.
  22. The way it looks to me is that Aniplex remembered they can make their own choices and decided to be cool with Toonami again. They didn’t just give us shows, they are actively promoting that Toonami is airing their stuff. I don’t think it’s just age that made Demon Slayer possible. Anyway, maybe I’m remembering wrong, but I could have sworn Demarco recently stated that R&M was getting a Toonami run, after a year or so of saying it was an AS only thing. I’d love to be wrong on that because I have zero interest in it and would rather avoid it wasting a timeslot for however many weeks, but I doubt we will be so lucky. If it absolutely must run on the block, I’d rather see it in the rerun slot rather than the lead, or even before the block starts, because let’s be real, Demarco’s decade long point about subs killing ratings will still hold true, and viewership would be in the can during its whole run if it’s at 11:30 or 12:00. Scavengers I think will be one of those things that is unpredictable and out of their hands. Max will decide when they are open to it getting a cable run, and it won’t take into consideration anything else. Meaning Toonami will either have to make a hasty change to fit it in, or it will get a standard AS run first, and have its Toonami run later on when there is room. One more thing I noticed in your schedule, depending on how literally you want to take TOMs words, he said this would be the last run of Mugen Train. The Facebook post also phrased it in a way implying it’s not going to be on cable again. Of course, that could just be marketing, but I could also see them only being able to afford a limited run deal over their typical year long contract for it. With that in mind, I don’t believe the rerun portion of the block will necessitate an expansion.
  23. It was especially important to manage expectations since the actual prank block set an impossibly high bar. They really needed to be up front that the block was a trial run at a revival and high dollar shows like DBZ and Gundam weren’t gonna be options in 2012. Things worked out in the end and that info did get around, but through niche Tumblr q/a sessions months into the revival.
  24. That seems awfully optimistic. Lot of Crunchyroll controlled things in there too, so far we haven’t seen any non sequel without Aniplex make the cut, so things like JJK and Spy X Family don’t feel possible. Even if they did, I feel like they wouldn’t be able to afford that many high dollar pickups in a single year. You also forgot the already confirmed for 2024 Rick and Morty anime.
  25. This is how schedule drops should be. Demarco’s obsession with keeping things hidden till two weeks before air time was always moronic. He still tries though, Entertainment and Lycoris only got made Facebook official 2 weeks ago despite being revealed over a month ago. I really like this because it means the schedule is fully locked in till mid April or so. We have like 3.5 full months where we don’t have to play the schedule guessing game. Just chill and watch.
