I will admit having a show that won an Emmy as a frontrunner kinda makes sense if you can't have a premiere.

On a not-quite-new episode of Ass Class: You heard him! 12:30 Tonight (5/21-22/22); ONLY TOONAMI!!

My theories are below: For whatever reason, they can only premiere ONE Sentai show at a time, and right now that's Lupin III. Either Food Wars Season 5 or Made In Abyss Season 2 will probably replace it. Viz's contract with Hulu for Yashahime has an exclusivity clause for each season's entire run plus 90 days afterward. That's why Season 1 showed up at the end of June, replacing The Promised Neverland Season 2. If I'm right, it will replace Ass Class, but something seems to be a little off. Ass Class has 4 episodes left, which would mean it ends June 11th. The only thing that would extend it to June 18th is a marathon of something next week... The other problem with my theory is that Yashahime has never gotten topicals. Would it if it replaced Ass Class, which shocked us by having ITS topicals return following Shenmue? Will Primal Season 2 premiere on Toonami? And what about Housing Complex C? So many unanswered questions...

Episode 2: River of Snakes Last week, Spear and Fang became a team. This week, they deal with their differences, but a fearsome new enemy slithers on the horizon! Midnight tonight (5/21-22/22)! ONLY TOONAMI--on Cable TV anyway.

Of course that's not really saying much since it IS arguably the WORST premiere on [as] yet in 2022. And there's the danger to Toonami premieres: if they can't find anything better on Sunday night, Season 2 of PRIMAL may premiere on Sunday nights, leaving Toonami with reruns.

From what I can see, Shenmue got 0.14 twice throughout its premiere run, so PRIMAL reruns have at least matched that so far in week 1. We'll see if it can keep it up next week. Can't fight quality, and PRIMAL is that in spades! Black Lotus peaked at a 0.15 in week 3 and went downhill from there, even doing as wretchedly as a 0.05 at one point in 2022. I think Shenmue has to be regarded as the bigger "hit" since it seldom missed the Top 50 and didn't do anywhere near that bad. I think it bottomed out at a 0.08 which ironically made #50. It's easy to see why it got a 3 AM rerun, while Black Lotus is relegated only to streaming. However, at 3 AM in reruns, Shenmue seems to be doing a steady 0.05, so I guess it doesn't have much replay value.

I could get used to this, despite the fact this is arguably the least fresh Toonami block we've had for a while: Genndy Tartakovsky's PRIMAL - 2019 rerun Assassination Classroom - 2016 Lupin The 3rd, Part 6 - 2021 One Piece x2 - 2012 Naruto Shippuden - 2014 Shenmue - 2022 rerun Attack On Titan - 2022 rerun But I digress. PRIMAL has turned out to be a pretty strong lead-in so far after all, as is seen by the performance of the shows which follow it! https://showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-saturday-5-14-2022-top-150-cable-originals-network-finals.html Pretty remarkable when BOTH episodes of One Piece make the Top 50, and all Toonami shows are maintaining a good range in Adults 18-34, only unable to beat sports shows in that key demographic!

Maybe Harley Quinn Season 2 was too hot for Midnight? Then again, Season 1 DID began at 10:30 when it marathonned. If they ever DO get to make HQ a mainstay on the block, it should not start with Season 2, but Season 1 episode 13. It's a travesty that Toonami STILL hasn't gotten to air that, nor the last 2 episodes of Ballmastrz 9009!

This BETTER air on Toonami! I guess in time we'll know. If Yashahime The Second Act doesn't show up at some point (my money is on it replacing Ass Class in June, either the 18th or 25th, depending upon whether or not we get a marathon on Memorial Day Weekend), then Fire Force Season 3 probably isn't coming, and Dr. Stone Season 3 may also be doubtful.
