It's been a while since I played the demo but if iirc the overworld is similar to Chrono Trigger, it has team attacks, and battles don't transition to a new screen like CT. It has timed hits more like Super Mario RPG though which I thought was pretty cool.

Just watch the live action movies, they are the best form of Kenshin anyway.
