Let’s take a short break from bitching about how much Toonami sucks to instead bitch about how much this years April Fools prank will suck. The schedule for midnight 4/1 just populated on the AS website, and nothing seems to be out of the ordinary. Perhaps the 2 week schedules will have a better hint.

What, if anything, do we expect this year? Last year they raised the bar a little, two episodes of Smiling Friends redone completely with puppets. Amusing, but also extremely short. And the first year in a long time where they didn’t force R&M into the prank somewhere. Not great, but an improvement over 21/22/23.

Unfortunately, I don’t think we will go 2 years in a row without R&M as the focus. And with season 8 still sitting with an ambiguous 2025 release date, this seems like the perfect time to either stealth drop an episode like 2017, or somehow drop the actual premier date in between a joke episode.

While this would make sense, I think a 10-minute sneak-peek at Lazarus might be a potential prediction, since we know it'll premiere five days afterwards.

Or maybe the entire first episode of Lazarus aired BACKWARDS.

Hell, maybe the whole Toonami Block from 4/5 aired from Midnight to 3:30 in reverse? With the screen upside-down?

THAT would be BONKERS!!

I'm actually not really expecting them to do anything this year...

AS as we knew it is dead.

Here you go.

For two weeks from now when it's time to eat your words.

We’re going to keep getting April Fools content till the channel is sold because it’s one of the few remaining avenues for creativity that the block seems to have.  The early Adult Swim counterculture environment is long gone, corporatized into another cog in the Max machine, but April Fools?  They get to spread their creative wings and have fun at the audiences expense.  An increasingly shrinking audience but an audience all the same.

The year where they did remotely nothing at least captured in one promo how miserable “what are they gonna do next?” can overbite a gag that’s timidly fun in the first place.

They always have that in mind if and when they try less.

Ok time to place your bets

1. they are spoiling it 12 hours early because it’s an R&M advertisement and they need maximum eyes on it

2. they are pretending to spoil it with the most obvious choice for a prank but it either won’t be directly associated with S8, or won’t have to do with R&M at all

I'm betting on #1 myself.

Here's my toss up thoughts for the night [ since I'll probably be asleep before it starts anyway ].

Potential random pop-ups of portals before, during, and after each program. Maybe even sucking in and spitting out characters during the actual shows.

Start out with 5 seconds of the first episode of season 8 before cutting to something else. Will it air completely? If it's ready to rock, I'd put it at the absolute tail end of the entire evening's joke phase as a reward or punishment for sitting through all the things.

Maybe have a portal at the bottom of the screen that spits out a little Rick and Morty to run across the screen, making comments about the program they are interrupting ala MST3K.

Words censored with belches. I'd actually be sad to miss some of that.

What was the prank?

This. This was the prank.

Little piece of advice for the future: it's usually faster to Google search and find the answer yourself than to ask and wait for people to just hand the answer to you. As a bonus, it saves you loads of embarrassment if the topic is a touchy one.

Spoiler

One time I asked what a masectomy was on the progenitor of these very boards. Not the biggest mistake I ever made, but it was up there.

That was unexpectedly pretty great. Granted, I haven't seen the last few of their April Fool's pranks, but generally they seem like they put about 0 thought and effort into them. This one looks like it took years to complete.

So it was a live-action reenactment of a bunch of Rick & Morty scenes done in different styles. Interesting, though it feels too close to last year's gag (Smiling Friends redone with puppets) for me.

And while there was no stealth premiere of the first episode, we did get a date and teaser. Here it is separate from the gag:
