Well that explains why they had to do fast damage control, this wasn’t their announcement to make. 
 

This feels like it could be its seasons fun meme show like Vending Machine Isekai or the current seasons deer girl show. Unusual main character. Hopefully Demarco keeps his dick beaters off of it as much as possible. The very first fight we see in the trailer being beamspam has me wary though.

Probably something for next year. Since Viz is jointly responsible for cracking the whip, I don’t expect an Uzumaki repeat.

Ranma looks to be a Netflix show.  They’re probably the only ones who could show nipples and not raise a stink.

Working with Viz is very interesting. I've been saying for years that they should be getting in on the ground floor with a adaptation of a action manga and while this is far from the most conventional pick it also feels very Adult Swim and probably was an affordable project.

Is it keeping the nudity? Usually when an old series gets a modern remake, step number 1 is deleting all the nudity that made people like the show in the first place.

Ok, I read the tweets explaining it wrong then. Thats marginally better. But that also means the first hour of Toonami will be subbed shows. That will be rough for whatever airs after it. 
 

I’d say there are two options. They either run dub then sub on Halloween, or run dub then HCC after, assuming they still have it.

Invincible Fight Girl: I still don't understand why this is on Adult Swim, but if they have a whole episode planned to go live, I should expect this to be the November original.

Mr. Frog in a wrestling ring: A neat gag, but I haven't seen enough Smiling Friends to love it as much as others do.

Uzumaki: Not only is the show ACTUALLY coming out this year, but Toonami's getting the subbed version first. Scratch that, the US is getting the anime sub BEFORE the dub. I don't think that's ever happened in the history of anime on television. At least, never to this extent.

Swordsmith Village: No schedule update this week? I guess they don't want to have another Rooster Fighter scenario on their hands.

I guess between Rick and Morty, Uzumaki, Invincible Fight Girl, and Demon Slayer, Toonami's all but booked until January.

We still have the Naruto opening coming up, but after that things are pretty tight. So here’s a pretty good guess at our Aug 17th schedule

12 - Rick and Morty Anime (sub) 

12:30 - Demon Slayer: Swordsmith Village

1 - One Piece

1:30 - Naruto Shippuden

2 - DBZ Kai

2:30 - Ninja Kamui

The question to ask, how do they wedge in Uzumaki on 9/28? The way I see it there is 2 options

Cringe option - when Naruto ends, double up OP for however many weeks till Uzumaki takes 12:30 on the 28th

Based option - actually get a new show to replace Naruto, and come 9/28 either drop Kai or do something to make sure Ninja Kamui ends the week prior.

I know which one I prefer, but seeing as they are likely farting out the last puff of the budget on Swordsmith, I doubt we will be so lucky unless Aniplex sends it over with a bonus like they did with Lycoris. 
 

IFG remains in wildcard territory. None of the material thus far has implied a Toonami run. So it could end up somewhere else on the schedule, or it could premier Thursday and rerun on Toonami.

Wouldn't be the worst thing for double OP to replace Shippuden a few weeks but that's not preferable to a fresh show by any means. That said, Demon Slayer will only premiere for 11 weeks and be done by November unless they actually got the Hashira Training arc (fat chance of that) so they're probably gonna save a premiere for November given both Rickanime and Uzumaki will be done by then. A fine time to bring in Mashle or something else Aniplex might throw in with Demon Slayer or whatever else they might have acquired from the few distributors still willing to work with them.

I see I was spot on thinking they would pair up Rickanime with Uzumaki at the top of the block for 4 weeks, I was also thinking a subbed power hour wasn't out of the question but I still didn't think they were crazy enough to do it. Evidently they are actually that crazy. I did not however bank on Uzumaki airing outside of Toonami on Thursdays. On one hand its pretty stupid for Toonami to not air the dub (they might still toss it in the back, we'll see) but on the other hand it's pretty cool that Adult Swim is willing to show the subbed airing before 3am. The thing that really brings the subbed hour down for me is the fact that Rickanime dubs premiere on Thursday and it looks like Max will have the sub before it even airs on Toonami (not confirmed yet but I'm very weary of that reality).

And if the Demon Slayer panel doesn't tell us Swordsmith Village is coming on August 10th then hooooo boy. Hopefully they have something else before Uzumaki.

Now for my thoughts on the previews...

Uzumaki looks great. Hopefully the story isn't a mess due to pacing it for 4 standard length episodes.

Rick and Morty: The Anime has a mid-2000s cerebral anime vibe and feels very little like R&M. It was rather confusing if there was even point being made in that first episode. The side characters in the dub also give it a mid-2000s sci-fi anime dub feel to me. Some of them were amusing. Morty's voice is good, Summer's is fine, Rick has his moments but Beth and Jerry just don't sound right. Luci Christian is voicing the new girl and she's great as per usual. Its just so freak'n weird to watch Rick & Morty dubbed by Sentai Studios. Overall, I didn't dislike it but I'm not eager to watch more.

Women Wearing Shoulder Pads is very different for Adult Swim. Some dialogue is witty but it's not particularly funny and played straight even when things get ridiculous. The closest thing AS has shown to that is The Shivering Truth but that was dark humor most of the time and this isn't dark humor so far but maybe it could go that direction. Also it was shown in Spanish with English subs. AS really is open to subtitled shows now huh?

Common Side Effects is also quite different from Adult Swim's usual. The closest comparison I would make is the Max series Fired on Mars. It has some jokes but overall it looks to be a serialized drama. It's got a interesting vibe and I'm the most excited to see more of that. I hope the audience is receptive to it because I want to see more mature animation like this.

Invincible Fight Girl was not boring Kinikuman. I enjoyed the first episode a lot. Its a very silly premise but it had a lot of charm to it. The animation was great. This show looks expensive so the one season is probably all that we'll ever get. The wrestling was pretty brutal for CN daytime so I somewhat understand why they got cold feet but it should be fine for tweens. This show should be promoted to kids but it's a darn fine all ages show that I don't think would feel entirely wrong on Toonami next to My Hero Academia.

With anime airing outside of Toonami and shows like WWSP and Common Side Effects being made for the network. I really feel like Adult Swim is looking to grow beyond it's trappings of  being a stoner comedy block. I'm quite interested to see how these shows do with the general AS audience.

Other completely meaningless delays? Absolutely. It’s election year, maybe another Calamavote style event? Mike Lazzo's whole thing was "Bring the funny or look for another job."  Rebrands like this usually mean they lost support in key demographics.

Dressrosa’s pacing is worse than most One Piece arcs if not all of them. We’re just trying to ease that suffering a bit.

There will certainly be a marathon on October 26th and maybe one on November 2nd to stall or milk Rickanime one more time but they’ll likely start IFG in early November so that could avoid more interruptions till the last two weeks of December. I won’t rule out the possibility of a Thanksgiving weekend preemption of some kind but it depends on what they have going on mid November.

Another attempt to get people to vote? I suppose that could happen but maybe it won’t affect Toonami much if at all since they have 5 hours before Toonami to work with.

As for Kinnikuman But Boring, I saw some quotes that really put my issues with a lot of this "Diet Anime" in perspective, and why I'm hoping between X-Men 97, Invincible, and Creature Commandos, we see a return to the 90s era comic art in animation, something that feels like its own thing, rather than aping the parts of others poorly.

 

 

There's too many people who see 5 seconds of an anime and think they can make their own version, but they consider so much of anime "prOBLEmaTIC!" and they create this boring slurry.  No one commits to the bit because the bit offends them somehow.  If you’re going to do anime, you gotta go for it.  Blood, dynamic angles, stuff that looks original, etc.

If you were going to make a Diet Anime wrestling show, you should be required to marathon Tiger Mask W first.

This dude just wants to ignore the problem. Everything that is cited as Calarts trash has earned it. If your character has the beanmouth, you have already failed. You will notice no one ever bitches about Primal, because it actually checks the box of having its own style. Calarts slop is not “its own style” and that’s why those shows are rightfully roasted. But Genndy seems to be a dying breed of people with their own style so we end up with either Calarts garbo or pretend anime. And you can’t really blame people for going the pretend anime route since every single year anime eats up another slice of the market.

What I wonder is now after seeing the finale, that absolutely reeked of “we know we aren’t getting a new season so let’s wrap it all up ASAP”, will S3 take advantage of the show being on AS? They clearly did not get their renewal notice until well into the move to AS. Or will they want to keep the tone for its demographic on Max?

And that's why Lazzo's not there anymore. He was just kinda incompentent IMHO now looking at some of the things... And when everyone's basically a stoner in some form now, the novelty kinda wears off, especially if you're been doing it for 20 years and kinda been screwing over your fanbase while you're at it. AS gets what they deserve. They made their bed, now they gotta sleep in it, and Family Guy showed us that.

Bruh......all because it has the CalArts style or the people come from CalArts, IT DOESN'T MEAN THAT IT'S AUTOMATICALLY BAD! The style just got that reputation because networks stopped giving a fuck in the late 2000s.....and trust me, as someone who predominately was a 2010s kid and shit, when I saw the 90s/2000s shit in reruns, I started noticing too......

 

Also, it's also the networks' fault why US Animation is dying.......And that live-action crap on Disney and Nick....and just kids....US Animation basically has no future at this point.....I'm just gonna go indie.

I hope they keep it consistent. All because it's on a teen/adult-oriented network doesn't mean that it has to be all-out edgy. Calm shows like MAWS is actually nice to have to calm down/warm up with the edgier stuff.

Not true. Lazzo knew his shit and wasn’t afraid to tell people harsh truths. People don’t like everything he did but he ran a smart ship and the decline in AS quality is notable when he left.

I think they can strike a balance. Dont go full edge, but do drop some of the obvious censorship things like everyone’s weird giant space guns.

It's always the most obvious choice. Well this ensures Toonami isn't a complete snore in August. Now we await the disappointing reveal of what they do when Shippuden ends. Aniplex is coming in clutch this year (Viz too). Hearing Aiko at Aniplex said "Toonami a special place in our hearts" gets me a little choked up.

I suppose MHA could replace Shippuden if they get it soon but at that point they might as well save it for November when they have 3 show openings rather than bring it in then move it in 3 weeks when Uzumaki starts then move it back up when 3 shows end. It’s bad enough they’re gonna push Demon Slayer to make room for Uzumaki because they can’t even give Toonami 11:30 temporarily to house Uzumaki or RickAniMorty and not bump every other premiere later for 4 weeks in the process.

The only reason I think they would opt for starting something else before November is to avoid having 3 holes on November 2nd (November 11th if they stall with an extra marathon).

Looks like someone missed out on all the mentions of Sony (Aniplex's parent company) being too expensive for their budget during that period. Whenever the question of "when new Demon Slayer?" came up, the answer was always some form of "it costs too much".

Good, good. That explains Demon Slayer, the most popular anime of the 2020s and a cultural phenomenon all on its own. Unsurprisingly, very expensive. 
 

So, what about the rest of their catalog? Demon Slayer being too expensive doesn’t automatically mean they were priced out of every show Aniplex owns, just the one that was selling out movie theaters.
