It's been 22.3 years

22.3 years ago . . . back when Kenny was dying every other episode, Chef was still around, the moral preaching bullshit was much less frequent, and South Park was still somewhat funny.

Edit: Also around the time they had their most iconic episode: Scott Tenorman Must Die.

Ah, the zoomers. Who have given us other hits like

Pass me the tide pods

It's 165°, and I can't find my hoodie.

I can't drive.....that's it, I can't drive.

And who can forget my entire generation will go viral, that'll show corporate.

also the generation that watched the world let an equivalent amount of people die every day during the height of the pandemic, when they were supposed to be coming of age. there's also the whole planet being made unlivable by climate change in their lifetime thing. and living in an increasingly shitty capitalist dystopia.

it's really not surprising that they have a dark and difficult to understand sense of humor. given everything

Dark humor is relative to the trauma experienced; it’s not so much about laughing at someone else’s pain as much as it is giving an apocalyptic event an external perspective.

Every generation thinks that.  With the exception of Boomers who were born into a post war recovery, every previous and subsequent generation has dealt with a gradual erosion of their ideals.  If you’re thinking the death of our ecosystem is a recent development, you might want to check out Silent Spring.

I'm a big proponent of jokes, comedy, dark humor, and I get that these jokes effect everyone differently, so I'd rather laugh in silence at good jokes about tragic circumstances, than in the faces of those effected by circumstances.

And mind you, it's the internet, a LOT of fucked up shit has gotten me to cackle, probably going to hell for that honestly. I'll be the first to admit, the internet and anonymity have probably made worse in a lot of ways, largely why I don't go on it a lot, and when I do, I focus more on trying to get a laugh out of people.

I'm not trying to devalue the validity of your sentiment, but I kinda of think it's steeped in a bit of tunnel vision.

What about kids that came up during the civil rights movement...COVID wasn't my first pandemic, it was just the first one that worked because of how easy it was to spread bad information and opinions. Bird flu, swine flu, mad cow, typhoid, AIDS...all of these things would have been far more hectic had the internet been a thing during their time.

Some of my friends never came back from Iraq, dark humor as a coping mechanism with gross cynicism isn't new but we can see it in HD, so to speak, because of how far we've come technologically.

Just my opinion... I'll not tap that vein of the perpetual bleakness of the majority minorities in this country in any given timeline....and no, I'm not trying to pull some sort of ethnic rank on you here because iirc, you're part Latino. (God I hope that's not my memory shitting the bed rn)

I'm not saying what zoomers are experiencing is somehow unique, but there are aspects of it that are somewhat unprecedented. ecological collapse on a massive scale is pretty much guaranteed at this point in a way it never was. in the past, wide scale problems like the hole in the ozone layer were adequately addressed, but that's not happening with climate change. at best, we might get really lucky and see regulations that lesson the worst of the ecological collapse, but that's supposing a drastic change in how things are done. zoomers aren't facing anything new, but they're far more likely to see what will probably be the worst ecological collapse in human history than we are, and gen alpha even more so.

I'm not trying to say that what the zoomers are facing is the worst thing ever, though it is likely to get way worse in their lifetime, more so for them than for you or I. I'm just saying we really shouldn't be surprised at their dark humor or that they're making jokes about 911.

you're right about things previous generations faced, though, and i hope i didn't come of as dismissive of those experiences. I'm also glad you pointed out how much more magnified the grim reality is, along with dark humor as a coping mechanism.

i do think it's a good idea for older generations to try and empathize with zoomers a bit, though. I think it's good to try and break the trend of dismissing younger generations or the things they face. it was bullshit when older generations did it to us, and i don't want to fall into that trap of thinking I'm somehow better and immune to that.

(and yeah, I'm part Latina lol)

It’s fair to say Zoomers are dealing with unique challenges because they are, it’s just not necessarily worse than the challenges previous generations faced.  The point isn’t to minimize what they’re experiencing as much as to refute the key point that Zoomers have an inscrutable sense of humor.  Joking about 9/11 isn’t a bad thing as long as the jokes aren’t designed to belittle the feelings that came out of that tragedy.  I’ll admit I laughed when my Twitter feed popped up a picture of Mickey on his steamboat heading toward the Twin Towers.  By all accounts it’s offensive ( can’t find it now) and someone who lost someone there may not process it,  but as someone who experienced the national trauma of the event I can find the humor in perspective.
