Ukraine “will never” recognise any Russian annexation of territory it occupies, even if it is to try to secure a peace deal, Zelenskyy added, and he repeated that he would only accept a ceasefire if it was followed by robust security guarantees that had the confidence of his country’s people.

Though Russia has said it will insist on incorporating territories that it occupies, for Ukraine it would always be “a temporary occupation”, Zelenskyy insisted, even if his country lacks the military muscle to expel Russia from all of the country at the moment.

I.E. they want the territory back but are willing to let it go for purposes of getting a deal, but not without getting a solid security guarantee. Of course, we know that's something Putin and his little puppet are never going to give them. That's forcing Zelensky to work with Europe to try and hammer something out that they could find acceptable. Heh, Trump cut them out negotiations, and now they're returning the favor. That's justice for ya. Bottom-line though, seems to be there's just no fixing this mess sadly. U.S. isn't going to help Ukraine, and the sooner everyone accepts that and moves on from depending on us the better.

Fortunately, seems Zelensky has gotten the message loud and clear and is only keeping the door open to still making a deal with the U.S. for the purpose of optics. I'm pretty sure he knows there's no chance of it really happening now. The question I think now is has the rest of Europe and the free world really settled with that, and I'm not sure they have just yet.
