Kudasai Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 (edited) Sometimes I wonder if I'm the only one that gets annoyed by this but what has become a pet peeve of mine recently is when I see a list that's in alphabetical order and there are multiple words with "The" in the title being listed under the letter T. I'm starting to think my that my English teacher was wrong when he taught us how to alphabetize but from what I remember when you have a bunch of words with "The" in the title you ignore word "The" and start with the first letter following the word the. For example if I'm making a list of tv shows in alphabetical order I'd put The Simpsons under the letter S because I'm ignoring The in the title. But what I'm often seeing is the exact opposite, like the music player in my phone for example, if I want to listen to The Who it's going to be under T instead of W. After navigating through the first crop of artists that start with T I get to the clusterfuck of bands that have The in the title, (disclaimer I have poor taste in music) The Animals The Ataris (what the hell was I thinking) The Beatles The Cure The Darkness The Doors The Grateful Dead The Killers The Police The Ramones The Rolling Stones The Smashing Pumpkins The Strokes The White Stripes The Who I know I'm making something out of nothing and this thread is stupid much like the OP but I guess that's workplace boredom for you. Doom Metal Alchemist Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 It's just easier for the programmers to alphabetize by the first word no matter what it is. I'm sure they give no fucks about grammar when making these applications. That said, it kinda bugs me too. 1
mthor Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 This really offends my inner librarian. Fun fact for the day: There are no articles (a, an, or the) in Russian. 1

MemeCream Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 I love The Ataris. The only song I know by them is the cover of 'Boys of Summer' but it's a good song dude.
tsar4 Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 BTW - my second promotion pre-college was to the "Home Entertainment" dept. (TVs, Stereos, Records & Tapes, etc.). I had to constantly move Van Morrison back under M after the Record Distributor Rep moved him under V, thinking the name was like Van Halen. Same went with bands starting with "The", moving them back under their actual name sans "The".

It's the music player software, making that mistake. Mine has the same problem. Everything from The Apples In Stereo to The Chad Mitchell Trio falls under, "The". So, When I can't find an artist, I dig through seventy two other artists. It's a real pain in the brain.

They're another E6 band and came up together, pretty similar, I like them a lot. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Olivia_Tremor_Control/The_Apples_in_Stereo Their Black Foliage album is really good.
