Lol, this horse must be built like a dachshund.

It's too short, right? :D

I forgot about those horses!  Didn't expect to see that!  Horses in space!  And why does hers have evil red eyes?

And showing they can look really good in modern animation too

But do this show and Lupin fall victim to "too old" syndrome?  Demarco always used to say they wouldn't get shows that were too old because they got bad ratings.  I guess because some people just won't watch something if it looks too old?  Like some people won't watch black and white movies just because they're in black and white, which is stupid.  Both shows have modern (and good) production values, to be sure, but still look retro.  I wonder if this show will suffer in viewership for it.  Though the time slot isn't exactly a good measurement for that anyway.  I did hear that Lupin did not do well though.  Don't really care about ratings that much, but it's just always something that bugged me is people not giving older or retro-styled stuff a chance.

I guess it's possible but I don't think these look all that old anymore as I think both of these update the designs/shading a whole lot toward giving them a much more modern feeling.  Not to mention the animation of them is really good like you said. Though having seen the old on Toonami I guess it's not like we can easily avoid noticing and having impressions influenced by how hugely updated they are compared to how they used to look, unlike someone who has never seen them before. So I'd hope they're not seen as looking old and it's just that they are targeting a more mature audience and mecha fans than something targeting the ultra smooth style of a shonen, which probably in itself probably puts some kind of a cap on ratings.

Like I thought Lupin part IV didn't even look all that retro. Those updated designs looked pretty modern to me since they really took on inspiration from recent artist Takeshi Koike's art style for the characters, just not as stylized as what he personally did for the also recent Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine series.

Also, like I guess Gundam Unicorn still had some of the retro style but many of the designs looked quite modern to me at the same time. Though Unicorn probably did have the advantage of being mostly new characters. So less old-style designs like that big-headed dude above who still needs to look like an evolution of his old design.

It seems like only its legs are short, as in dwarfism.  Either that or she's about 6.5 - 7 ft tall (where she's grasping the reins should be about 5' or more above the ground and yet it's well below her shoulder height).  I mean, her knees are even with its belly, so her lower legs alone must be ~2.5' long!  Maybe she has one of her minions carry around a half-apple and place it for her when she dismounts so she won't look short.  :P

Yeah, I know I'm nitpicking, but it was just so jarring when she hit the ground way before I was expecting that motion to complete.  Gotta say though, she does fill out those tights nicely. ;)

I'm ashamed to admit it - okay, maybe not really - but I enjoyed this more than I did the Food Wars premiere.

In the same vein, I was more turned on by Kycilia's domineering attitude (and this was sans OTN mask!) than I was the innuendo-laden dialogue of that urban developer lady.

I thought Kycilia was hot until she took her helmet off.  Then her hair just pissed me off.
