Reoccuring Dreams.

I have this reoccuring dream about my old family house. I’m sitting on the porch, watching my family go one by one.

Realistically, it’s how it went. My step dad had ptsd and was an alcoholic and i don’t think there was anything we couldn’t do to get our ass beat, but we were bad kids. He was the first to leave.

My biological mother has munchausen syndrome by proxy and is bipolar and wasn’t the best person to be around. Even though she had her ways i loved her. She’d leave some times for days, weeks...once a month at a time, but she’d always come back. One day, she just didn’t.

The dream i have is just me, sitting on my porch, watching my family leave one by one until it’s just me then it gets pitch black. When i spoke to someone about it, they brought up me having abandonment issues and being afraid of just being stagnant. Not going anywhere. Not moving.

The dream itself changes very little. I’m just surprised i have it so often. It’s pretty weird and i don’t like thinking of my past. What i was born into and where i came from. It’s affected me greatly. When i think about it, i remember things i really shouldn’t. I was far too young to remember, yet i do. I remember things that happened to me. My brothers and sisters. It just makes me angry and insane.

Do you have any dreams like this?

I don't often remember dreams, but there are two I remember having more than once.

Seeing/Meeting Leonard Cohen. Once in my aunt's kitchen in a dream. Once in a restaurant in France I'd visited when I was in high school. In that one I told him I'd had this dream before, and he confirmed it.

Low gravity situations. I used to dream that, at the crux of the moment at which I was sure I would fall and be injured, I would drift and float with ease toward the ground. There was still a level of anxiety regarding the loss of control, and a sense of need about getting out of the air, but otherwise it was not an unpleasant recurring dream.

The oldest reoccurring dream I can remember  started in like 1st grade. First time I had it I was locked in the back seat of a car and it was moving around out of control and I remember it as two skeletons in the front seat. More of a straight up bad dream. Then I was in the passenger seat and would move to the driver;'s seat and it was still wildly out of control, and some vague sort of idk law enforcement would try to talk me through controlling it over the phone. The last few years I've had it I've been in the driver's seat and have been like. Trying to drive it semi passably, while still being way dangerous with tons of close calls since it's always locked/won't stop completely. Kinda makes sense in the progression from kid with married parents > older kid, one parent, cell phones kinda > adult who gets a ride places. I wonder if they would stop completely if I learned to drive

i don't really have recurring dreams, but i do have a recurring theme which is that i'm seldom in my own dreams.

that is i'm usually someone other than myself. i still see everything from the first person, i'm just some strange man or woman living a life that is completely alien from my real one.

yeah. weird.

I used to get reoccurring dreams, but the only ones I've had (and for a long, ongoing time) is one where I'm in a house I've never been in and there are people I do not know/recognize.  Occasionally, a person I know will make a "cameo appearance" but they disappear quickly.  I know that the house/rooms/faces should be/could be people & places that I may have seen in passing, but of the friends houses and rooms I've been in, these do not exist.  There's always a vague feeling that I should not be in these places or among these people.

Most recently though, I had a real strange one where I was being honored for something really ridiculously minor at this event...and they brought in Kid Rock to emcee.  I kept thinking, "all this because I just did 'X'?  But it was just 'X'!"   I don't know any of the songs he does, so I have no idea why Kid Rock was in the dream.

Do you have any dreams like this?

Home
In particular, to see your childhood home, your hometown, or a home that you previously lived in indicates your own desires for building a family and your family ideologies. It also reflects aspects of yourself that were prominent or developed during the time you lived in that home. You may experience some unfinished feelings that are being triggered by some waking situation. Alternatively, the dream may represent your outdated thinking.

Porch
To dream of a porch represents your personality, your social self, your facade and how you portray yourself to others.

Sitting
To dream that you are sitting indicates your indecision. You do not know what you want to do about something. It also suggests that you are idling and wasting your life away.

Watching
To dream that you are watching someone or something indicates your passiveness. You lack initiative to take a position or to take action. It may reflect upon your real life and how you are watching life pass you by, instead of participating in it. You need to take more initiative. Alternatively, the dream symbolizes your neutrality in some situation. You do not want to take a side.

Leaving
To dream that someone is leaving you refers to feelings of rejection or of not being able to keep up. You are questioning your abilities. Perhaps you are not utilizing your full potential. Alternatively, the dream indicates an end to something; you are ready to let go of the past and move forward.

Abandonment
To dream that you are abandoned suggests that it is time to leave behind past feelings and characteristics that are hindering your growth. Let go of your old attitudes. A more direct and literal interpretation of this dream indicates you have a fear of being deserted, abandoned, or even betrayed. It may stem from a recent loss or a fear of losing a loved one. The fear of abandonment may manifest itself into your dream as part of the healing process and dealing with losing a loved one. It may also stem from unresolved feelings or problems from childhood. Alternatively, the dream indicates that you are feeling neglected or that your feelings are being overlooked.

Black
Black symbolizes the unknown, the subconscious, danger, mystery, darkness, death, mourning, rejection, hate or malice. The color invites you to delve deeper in your subconscious in order to gain a better understanding of yourself. It also signifies a lack of love and lack of support. More positively, black represents potential and possibilities. It is like a clean or blank slate.

Why Do Some Dreams Recur?

Most dreams contain messages that serve to teach you something about yourself. However, soon after you wake up to go about your daily routine, you tend to quickly forget what you dream about. The message in recurring dreams may be so important and/or powerful that it refuses to go away. The frequent repetition of such dreams forces you to pay attention and confront the dream. It is desperately trying to tell you something.  Such dreams are often nightmarish or frightening in their content, which also helps you to take notice and pay attention to them.

Recurring dreams are quite common and are often triggered by a certain life situation, transitional phase in life or a problem that keeps coming back again and again. These dreams may recur daily, once a week, or once a month. Whatever the frequency, there is little variation in the dream content itself. Such dreams may be highlighting a personal weakness, fear, or your inability to cope with something in your life - past or present.

The repetitive patterns in your dream reveal some of the most valuable information about yourself. It may point to a conflict, situation or matter in your waking life that remains unresolved or unsettled. Some urgent underlying message in your unconscious is demanding to be understood.

Following are some tips to help you in overcoming your recurring dreams.

1. To start to understand your recurring dream, you must be willing to accept some sort of change or undergo a transformation.

2. You need to look within yourself and confront whatever you may find no matter how difficult it may be.

3. Look at the dream from an objective point of view. Try to get pass the emotional and reactive elements of the dream and get down to the symbolic images. Often times, dreams are masked by elements that are disturbing, thus preventing you to delve any deeper. This is a defense mechanism that your unconscious is putting up.

4. Each and every time you have a recurring dream, write it down in great detail. Look for any subtle variations. These variations are the most significant as it indicates that you are one step closer to understanding why the dream recurs.

5. Pay attention to what is going on in your waking life when you have these recurring dreams. You may start to notice a pattern.

6. Be patient. Do not get discourage if these dreams still recur even after you thought you have come to understand them.

7. Learn to accept yourself truly and fully.

Once you discover what your recurring dream is trying to tell you, these dreams will change or altogether disappear.
