One-Punch Man returns, Lupin & Bebop swap August 11th

Recommended Posts

THIS JUST IN!!! I was checking to see if Pre-Flight from SDCC would be replaced tonight (I kinda hope not), but I ended up seeing THIS shocking new development:

And I thought they lost the rights to OPM on 7/16/18, but I guess they decided to renew it?? While I'm glad that Punchy is back, it's a shame that it couldn't be a Gundam show, as they're remaining curiously absent from the lineup. Also, I have a bad feeling about Shippuden. AOT has to go somewhere, and FLCL: Progressive's rerun has one episode left. Or, maybe AOT S3 temporarily replaces MHA and MHA comes back the following week? Either way, we need expansion of some sort in September to showcase FLCL Alternative. Alternative has already been announced for 11:30, so AOT pretty much has to be either 10:30 (with expansion) or 11 (with no expansion) in September, but it would suck for its timeslot to change right away. Either that, or its previously-announced timeslot needs to change. And if NO expansion, then that means Shippuden would be going "bye bye" on 8/25 right in the middle of the 5 Kage arc before the franchise returns on 9/29 with Boruto. I'm immensely enjoying the 5 Kage arc so I REALLY hope THAT'S not the case!

So hopefully there IS expansion to 10 PM on 9/1 to showcase FLCL Progressive twice, and that continues on 9/8 with Dragon Ball Super, MHA, and perhaps AOT in new timeslots. That way Shippuden can keep on chugging along at 2! Also, this new almost unprecedented THIRD run of OPM will most likely end in early November; could that mean that's when Toonami gets Season 2? If not then, maybe to kick off 2019??

It's official: Viz Media loves Toonami. They'll probably be at second base by the 11th.

At this point, I think it's likely Megalo Box premieres in the next (early) open slot, and we get OPM S2 immediately afterward.

You have to look at the negative spaces. It shows no Toonami shows but R&M is gone and Family Guy is at 9:30, with only a single episode of The Venture Bros. between them. That means Toonami is expanding to 10 PM to welcome AOT, but the question is "in what timeslot"? 10 PM would be awesome but insane. 10:30 would be great as well, and would only displace DBS, and if you're gonna do that and put it in an earlier slot than ever on Toonami, 3 weeks from now would be the time to do it. But MHA would be displaceable as well IF they're going to show the recap on the 11th. It turns out that's not the plan though as they're skipping over Episode 13.5 "Hero Notebook". Kind of a shame considering that might not be a bad way to introduce the show to a prime time audience.

But it's actually quite possible that after AOT Season 2 got snubbed and placed in a late-night timeslot, they'll really be rolling out the red carpet for Season 3 and premiering it at 10 PM! At least it's likely that it will get 10:30. Problem is, I probably won't see it for most of the season at that earlier hour because I'll likely be watching College Football instead and catching it on my DVR, while DBS just might end up during halftime. But if the earlier time works out better, I say go for it!

None YET. Generally they're not aware that WE'RE aware of the backdoor schedule. I'm sure that fanfare will be coming in early August, and people will wonder why they couldn't make this happen sooner. But I believe that there was some kind of tightrope walking this time to avoid the extensive use of "Voice of God" in the topicals that resulted from an earlier simuldub and giving the voice actors room to breathe, yet doing it early enough for FUNi's liking.

So are they not ever going to to put a new show in that slot again?  At least it's a show that hasn't run in a while though.  And it will be fun to have My Hero Academia and One Punch Man on the block at the same time.  And yep, definitely locking things down so they can get season 2 as well.

They need to get rid of Bebop, though.

I thought somebody blabbed to Demarco about it and he had it disabled.  Waiting so late to promote things really doesn't make sense, though.  Most networks will promote stuff months ahead of time so everyone is sure to know by the time the new show premieres, to be there to watch it or set their DVRs.

The Williams Street guys are kind of idiots at promoting things. Lazzo said that the reason they didn't make as much anime promos in the ACTN days was because "promos don't bring people in". And let us not forget when Toonami first came back, and Demarco initially planned to save the announcement of Deadman Wonderland and Casshern Sins for the night of as a throwback to the "tune in to see what's on" days of basic cable, before he was forced to announce them the Tuesday of that week.

You know, I've asked for Toonami to do at least a tiny bit more advertising outside of the block... but since the FLCL Progressive promo that aired during an NBA playoff game seemingly failed to inflate the numbers, I guess I see their logic in it now.

On the other hand, I like that we're getting show announcements earlier than usual as of late, even though Viz is probably contributing more to that.

Yeah but it was an unneeded sequel to a cult hit. They knew it wasn't going to do that great... I mean they aired it after MHA which is years old and had already been seen by almost everyone. AOT S3 and OPM2 is what they should spend their advertising bucks on.

When they have 8-9 premieres before 2:30AM (which they seem to be doing soon) I don't think they really need another one that late.

I'm kinda surprised they're bringing back One-Punch Man to rerun because it looked like they had just lost the streaming rights but with season 2 approaching it makes sense to rerun it. I welcome its return. Saitama makes for good late night rerun fodder.

It seems kind of insane that they're expanding even more but they had the opportunity to slide things down to fit in Attack on Titan and chose to fill the opening with a rerun forcing expansion. Not sure if it's a good idea at this point but we'll see how it goes.

Well the last time they moved the whole block it messed up ratings.  Such drastic schedule changes aren't a good idea.  They won't repeat that mistake, at least according to what Demarco said at the time.  The audience didn't adjust so they moved it back.

It's already been almost two years since the new season was greenlit. Virtually all other anime are announced, produced, and then completely aired in that amount of time. The only way I can rationalize this is so that the animation studio (J.C. Staff, in this case) can make it look as brain-meltingly great as the first season.

Yeah, the first week or so of 2020 is a while from now, but there are lots of other anime to watch. You don't have to hyperfocus on any one that you especially want to see.

I mean, as an animator who took the lead in making a few projects, I understand having to take years to make a full season of immense quality to rival that of the first season!  I DO think that if they have a new director, he MUST take his time to make the animation perfect and it will be a great challenge.
