real life example:

if you are really happy about a friend accomplising something like getting a promotion, but her friends are more interested or popular with her,

your belief to exclude yourself from somewhere youre not wanted actually distracts you from congratulating your friend...

every peer network has standards, and friends can fit many standards.  you need to be realistic with your friends amirte?

I have a particularly strong instinct for a smoked turkey sandwich right about now. Not fulfilling this urge would be... unnatural...

I may be wrong, but I think that the OP is getting at something like this:  You make a friend and eventually are invited to something with a group of their friends.  At the event, they talk and laugh about things that happened to them collectively as a group, which you were not around for and have no input toward.  You're happy that your friend is enjoying themselves, but you're the outsider here.
