real life example:

if you are really happy about a friend accomplising something like getting a promotion, but her friends are more interested or popular with her,

your belief to exclude yourself from somewhere youre not wanted actually distracts you from congratulating your friend...

I may be wrong, but I think that the OP is getting at something like this:  You make a friend and eventually are invited to something with a group of their friends.  At the event, they talk and laugh about things that happened to them collectively as a group, which you were not around for and have no input toward.  You're happy that your friend is enjoying themselves, but you're the outsider here.
