jackiemarie90
I was just posting a thought after I met a councillor, but I see it has worried people, sorry. Edited February 8, 2018 by jackiemarie90
GunStarHero
I actually tried calling one several years ago and it was the most infuriating thing ever. The guy just called the sheriff and hung up. Then the sheriff shows up and offers to chat but recommends the hotline, which just repeated the cycle. Sheriff wouldn't do anything unless I was actively harming others, either. Useless.

Quite honestly, society needs to change before they do shit like that, people like this are just born to early, I'm sure in a more "progressive" time people will care about mental illness but no one gives a dam right now, all they can say is, "same". Codename: Jackass
I feel like people just post the suicide hotline number to salve their own conscience or make people think they gave a shit. It's like "Hey I don't know you or really care that you wanna take yourself out but I did something by posting the hotline number. See?! I totally care. Not my problem anymore."
GunStarHero
I do hope things get better or at the very least taken more seriously, due to the aforementioned incident, I get offended when someone drops the hotline number and leaves it at that. I do recognize many people dont seem to know what the right move is and in lieu of making the wrong move they opt to give out a phone number they were taught to use in such situations. Just shitty that it's such a useless thing.
Azalar Hex
Those suicide hotlines are a crock of shit anyhow, probably. I've never called one, but I'm thinking a complete stranger who knows shit-all about you or the problems you are dealing with isn't going to be any use outside of telling you "This is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Your family loves you. Life is worth living. You mean more to this world than you realize. If you were gone people would notice and miss you." A lot of people don't like assuming personal responsibility. Its why we got a lot of racists running around for trump. Which is of course is more depressing, and thought of me ruining their day is enough to keep me alive. I love being an asshole.

But idk, took alot of drugs now.

I can see both arguments here but I imagine what most peoples thoughts are a trained professional is probably a lot better to help with this matter. Like if you came up to me and were like "yo I scratched my hand" I'd be fully capable of delivering first aid by cleaning said scratch and applying a band aid no problem. If you came up to me like "yo I got mauled by a bear" I'd do what I could but definitely tell you get real medical attention.

Maybe they feel better shifting the responsibility onto professionals. But are those people really professionals.....Like I'm really asking because I have no idea. I would think a shrink or something would have to be on the other line.....Or at least a hypnotist. Also, I have no idea why my brain shifted to this, but I think there was a Boy Meets World episode about this.....
Codename: Jackass
I'm pretty sure the people who work suicide hotlines are volunteers, for the most part.

Juice McKenzie
It takes balls to kill yourself. The ability to fight your will to survive like that is impressive. I think about suicide a lot but I know i'm too much of a pussy to do anything about it and someone else trying to reassure me doesn't change anything because I don't really care what others have to say. It's why I don't bother telling others what I have to say.
nameraka
When I used to work in a call center we would get suicidal callers from time to time and there was a whole set of procedures about how to handle it. Thankfully I never got one. I was having suicidal thoughts pretty much daily at the time and really wouldn't have been in any condition to be talking someone else out of it. Agreed that the hotlines are pretty fucking useless, but I guess I'm saying you never know what shit other people are dealing with themselves. Even now that I"m doing better, I"m not sure I'd feel comfortable trying to talk someone out of it when I still get up every morning and have to remind myself why I didn't go through with it. garbagepailcat
I have interacted with one of those hotlines before, and it was helpful-ish. I was dealing with something that I didn’t want to burden the people in my life with. I’m sure if I had reached out to people irl, they would have listened and would have been understanding and helpful, but I didn’t want people to think that I was struggling or going crazy or whatever someone might think about a suicidal person. Idk. I used a texting hotline, and the person I spoke with provided me with useful resources. I think that giving out a hotline can be impersonal and show a lack of care, but it can also be a viable option for someone who A) wants to just talk through some shit with a stranger who can’t pass judgment and B) needs to be directed to the proper help. Of course, I didn’t commit suicide, and I never tried. I just found myself in a position where I thought about it more often than not, which was scary, so I sought help. Every situation is different, and depression impacts people in varying ways. Though these hotlines may not directly help you, they can lead you in the right direction.
