Live Action One Piece, from sheer confusion to Season 2 renewal.
Sketch replied to Jman's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Not even close to topping the CW’s ad which declared Superman is coming in Supergirl -
At minimum this is proof that the project isn't dead but I wont set my hopes too high for what they'll be showing off. That said, mentioning it in the description for this joint panel between Production IG and WIT makes me think it won't be a small tease because that would be a waste of time at a joint panel I would think. If MAWS runs 12-13 episodes creating an opening on September 30th or October 7th then I feel the odds are 50/50 that we'll see Uzumaki air before either FLCL series this year.

Fresh July schedules, MAWS at midnight as expected

Yeah it had a marathon but no season got a full rerun even when Toonami could have used a reliable rerun. -

Just couldn’t spare a Dr. Stone or One Piece to make up for a week off I guess. I’m 90% sure it’s a one off but I suppose it does leave them something to fall back on if they don’t have a new show for July 15th. If that happens then I just want them to shift Food Wars down to either 2am or 2:30. It’s just stupidly ironic if this shitty season is the only one they gave two full airings. But if the beach episode is the only one that repairs, that’s for the best. It’s arguably the best episode of season anyway. -
Streaming isn’t profitable enough on its own unless it is ad-supported. No one wants to pay for multiple services every month and subscriptions are declining after they hit new highs during lock down. Netflix and Hulu worked when they were the only major services but now no one can hold subscribers like before. Kids in particular are watching videos on YouTube and TikTok when they have control of what they are watching.

It’s not looking good on that front. Kids aren’t watching cable and the CN brand means very little to them.

We can dream. At this point it’s anyone’s guess when it will finally air and/or stream. As for July 1st and 8th, this is so gunDAM predictable. They really aren’t going to give Toonami an extra wiggle room despite having 11 hours a night. I knew they weren’t going to spare us from a 2nd half marathon of Unicorn. This is about as bad as how they ran Black Lotus into the ground in a short time… arguably worse. -
Love the name. I don’t know how well this will go but I think it’s a fun use of their massive library. Maybe they should have tried it under the CN banner but they’re going hard after the nostalgic 18-49s and being on AS makes more sense for the ad-space.

Lois has always been a tomboy even when she's been presented as a classy lady. People are real quick to point out how much she (absolutely) looks like the lead from the Owl House and it gets the show points with some animation fans and loses it some with others. It will likely have a mixed reception from animation fans but being a Superman thing sells it to a broader audience than just the animation heads. I agree it probably will do worse than UWE but probably not much worse.
-
Those very same shows might have got more interest if they premiered now on Disney Plus but nobody paid attention to them on DXD. Also their animation makes MAWS look great by comparison. I really don’t think MAWS will bomb despite clearly not being Invincible. Despite what a very vocal minority has to say about it being filled with vocal minorities, it’s probably gonna do fine. But chances of there being more all but went out the window when they abandoned plans to market it to the youth.

1) Gunn’s new focus hasn’t even happened yet 2) People watch cape shit that doesn’t tie into anything despite what Disney thinks 3) Looking like anime isn’t a deal breaker given people still want more 2003 Teen Titans to this day But I know there are also cape shit fans that won’t give the show a chance because Lois is Asian, Jimmy is Indian and Clark comes off as a himbo that girl boss Lois will push around because that’s woke or some shit. They’ll be frothing at the mouth if Jimmy is gay or there’s a trans character in it.

They didn’t mention Toonami in the earliest ads for Unicorn either. To play devil’s advocate that article might not know the exact time MAWS is on Toonami and the author just knows Toonami starts at Midnight. But there’s no way I see MAWS encores airing in the back of the block. It’s probably first, maybe 2nd. Following up on prior conversations about the appeal of this show for adults… While I do think it feels more like a CN show than UWE does (mostly because UWE is kinda boring for a kids show) I don’t actually think the Toonami audience will avoid watching it. The majority might even like it. The Thursday night crowd though? I’m skeptical but cape shit does tend to appeal to a broader audience than a lot of what AS airs.

Two more June schedules revealed, still no new shows

DeMarco needs to spend less time on social media, period. Unrelated to that but related to the original topic, they definitely aren’t waiting to announce Lupin Zero. Sentai’s BD coming in September has no dub. But that reminds me, the upcoming BD from Sentai of Eizouken does have a dub but CR has the master license. I suppose maybe that could be a show they had to talk to the Japanese producers to get if CR got in the way. -

The man clearly didn't pay enough attention to Beast Wars but I'm sure being forced to air TF Armada, Energon, Cybertron, DICE, Yu-Gi-Oh and Duel Masters was irritating. I seem to recall he didn't dig the 2002 He-Man despite how good it was. -

TFG1 was a bit before my time so I didn't catch onto Transformers till Beast Wars. TMNT 1987 hit the airwaves when I was 3 years old and I've been a TMNT fan ever since. Probably anyone born after 1980 could be a fan of both TF and TMNT because those franchises have persisted since 1984 but DeMarco is a bit older than that at least so naturally he'd be more interested in the gritty black and white TMNT comic than the sanitized goofy cartoon. Though Voltron and TFG1 came out around the same time so maybe G1 just didn't appeal to him. -

More stalling, but maybe Dr Stone S3?

Aniplex was SUPER reliable until Demon Slayer broke box office records and Sony decided to leverage its value. There was that brief period when Hulu secured some Aniplex titles exclusively but that much like Sailor Moon with Viz Meda didn't at all mean they stopped shopping their series to Toonami. Suddenly they were acting like Crunchyroll did when it was owned by WarnerMedia. It feels like Sony looked at how Crunchyroll did business and decided all of their companies should learn from them. Even though FUNimation bought Crunchyroll (not the other way around despite the CR brand being the one going forward) and ex-FUNimation staff taking over CR, the company hasn't acted much at all like the FUNimation we once knew. When they bought The Right Stuf they also seemed to have complicated Adult Swim's prior ability to get Gundam series directly from Sunrise in Japan (unless G Witch is just a unique circumstance). Somehow they have been able to wrangle MHA season 6, Food Wars season 5 and Dr. Stone season 3 but Demon Slayer and Mob Psycho 100 seasons 2 and 3 remain out of reach while Toonami doesn't even get a sniff of the new era of shounen including Chainsaw Man, Spy x Family, Jujutsu Kaisen, MASHLE and Hell's Paradise. And it also doesn't look likely that Megalobox: Nomad or SSSS.Dynazenon will be gracing the block any time soon either. It's hard to say what is going on with Viz Media now. They sold Toonami the dub premieres of HxH, JoJo Parts 3, 4 and 5, One-Punch Man, Megalobox and Boruto as soon as they were available but Yasha-Hime broke that trend. They still let Toonami buy the broadcast rights but only after the episodes had streamed on FUNimation, Crunchyroll and Hulu. Bleach is another odd case because Disney bought the streaming rights outside of Japan but Viz supposedly has the master license outside of Japan and that would mean Viz sold those rights to Disney. We have no idea if that's going to stay an exclusive deal or not. As for everything else they have (which frankly isn't much) it would not be surprising if Adult Swim wasn't interested in any of it or don't want to pay whatever Viz is asking for them. That leaves Sentai as the best partner they can reach out to right now and while they don't have many huge hits they have some modest ones besides Made in Abyss that Toonami really ought to throw on for the sake of variety. -

With AoTs dub it really makes you wonder what the holdup is since it still isn’t streaming yet. Maybe nobody knows who can premiere it. -

There's arguably no reason to start another show until Food Wars ends unless they expand so that comes as no surprise. Nice of them to give a heads up about the extra long episode of Unicorn I guess. It seems pretty dang likely that the last two episodes of Unicorn will premiere on June 22nd and encore on June 24th bumping Dr. Stone to 1am. Either that or maybe they double up One Piece that week. And I'm already dreading the likelihood that Jul 1st will be another Unicorn marathon. And these schedules also basically confirm they're not showing a DC animated movie the weekend The Flash hits theaters which IMO is a pity because Justice League: Flashpoint is pretty rad.
