2024 Presidential Elections: the schadenfreude commences
Raptorpat replied to NewBluntsworth's topic in Current Events
(I moved your post to the election thread) I think the strategic assessment, which I basically agree with, is that after everything, Trump and Trump-endorsed maga devout just aren't super electable in at least neutrally competitive environments. So to the extent that they remain the largest plurality in GOP primaries, keeping them afloat through to the general election is the best way to keep independents in those races from voting R. -
2024 Presidential Elections: the schadenfreude commences

Mentioned it in the Stormy thread, but more relevant in the election thread: https://twitter.com/juliealdermanb/status/1642851080995217408?s=20 The Dems dropped a public oppo dump on Desantis (who hasn't officially joined the race) so Trump etc. can use it against him in the primary. If the anti-Trump primary vote doesn't consolidate, then Trump probably rolls through like the 2016 primary with a better head start. -
Given Trump winning the primary is the presumed political goal, Dems also dropped their oppo dump on Desantis so the Trump team can use it in the primary.

So here's my overview: We reworked the layout of the site and retired a lot of old folders. Toonami and [as] got merged and were elevated into a main folder (instead of sub-boards), and other media folders were consolidated or retired. But most notably, we replaced the sort-of-asmb-themed Noise folders. People associated them with the old folders and self-sorted, and it just kind of sucked as an experience with the drama and turf wars. So instead, now we have a vanilla "Current Events" folder (it's a peppier news folder without the inherent negativity of rants) and a catch-all "General Discussion" folder for anything without its own section plus conversational stuff (it's a more higher-minded replacement of old FFA). So that's like the "public square" of things where everyone intermingles, and the flip side is that people now have membership-based "private communities" for that underlying desire to self-sort and enjoy separate experiences. The two most notable are the IB club, which is basically an OG IB-style commune folder where people can post all the most absurdist or silly shitposts they want, and the Thunderdome which is a more true-to-form successor to old DF that pooh runs for real instead of as a meme. It's been slow during the transition (though it was slow moving into it) but I think that on the whole it's been a positive shift. More folks are starting to pop back in (and more importantly, stick around) and sitewide activity has gone up too.

I regret that I didn't come here for the 2020 election thread.

absotively posolutely I think this was the thread where he got called out on it: https://unevenedge.com/topic/31172-james-gunn-publicly-posted-photos-of-himself-at-pedophile-themed-to-catch-a-predator-party/ (it also has link to the original meltdown thread via the quotes) -

you've certainly missed a lot. just in terms of big elections, that's the end of 2016, the roy moore special/bucket meltdown extreme, 2018, 2020, 2022. by my math, asmb was around for 13 years and uemb is already at six and a half years. -

I have a thing about the sensation of wet hair touching other surfaces (other than like when drying off with a towel), just gives me the heebie jeebies. So by the time my hair is dry enough, it's irrelevant.

Inflation wasn't determinative in 2022 and the other issues that competed with it (eg. abortion and extremism) remain factors. But when inflation/economics is determinative it is because of the trend (are we going up or down?) and not the real inflation of the moment. That it's easing is probably enough to neutralize it (and again, it wasn't determinative in 2022). This is true. But as 2022 showed, the GOP preaching to the choir via friendly media outlets created a disproportionate echo chamber. And 2022 showed that independents weren't buying into it (independents nearly handed Dems the House, if only more actual Dem voters hadn't stayed home). I don't see Trump changing from that trajectory and given all we've seen from the Dominion case, I don't see conservative media focusing on improving their credibility and broadening their viewership so much as they are continuing to wage war over their existing (also shrinking) audience base.

It's too premature to speculate, given we don't even know what any of the details are yet, but I'ma say my mindset is that it improves his odds of winning the primary (as long as he's not convicted first) because even his adversaries feel compelled to circle the wagons. But I think it increases the odds that he loses a general (should he get that far), and by higher margins. Biden's mediocre numbers have been fairly stable and independents probably won't buy the claim that it's a pure political witch hunt with no merit and it'll be 2022 redux. ALL THAT BEING SAID, any of this could or will change based on what comes out Tuesday.
