  1. WarnerMedia is notorious for the right hand not knowing what the left is doing. I have no reason to think the story is false if Variety posted it. It’s weird because the virtual convention made it a point that Toonami was working primarily on co-productions and a week later WarneMedia goes “we’re selling the company.”.
  2. Not if WarnerMedia unloads it and it gets picked up by a rival service. This made sense before they very publicly declared their intention to sell it ASAP.
  3. Na na na na na na RATINGS! That and the Toonami audience, as has been said, was starved for fresh content. Let’s see if next week, sans competition from a UFC PPV (a free card should be over right when Gotham Knights is starting) can do similar.
  4. DeMarco having shit taste is a meme, but there are things he does that make sense from a business perspective, and things that...don’t. The Uzumaki thing is fairly simple. You can’t beat the streamers on speed of the big shows, or even ease of access unless you’re talking about areas that have poor internet accessibility. And there’s only so much money DeMarco can pour into originals (and there’s going to be a lot less cash to go around if WarnerMedia sells off Crunchyroll to Sony or NBC Universal, to name a few prospective candidates). So doing something in black and white stretches the dollar further. A Blade Runner anime? Blade Runner’s still a name with clout even if no one saw 2049, and we all know how DeMarco feels about Watanabe. My main concern is a lot of these originals rely on Crunchyroll co-funding. If WarnerMedia sells it off and they bail with those co-productions, leaving DeMarco up shit creek without a paddle, 2021 will be just as anemic even if we have the vaccine.
  5. You say that when there’s an adaptation of the Killing Joke that added a completely pointless Batman and Barbara Gordon sex scene. Or the ridiculous attempts to make Damien Wayne and Raven a thing. Miller’s heavy, bulky designs aside, this is a great story at its core. It’s the story of someone beaten down by his life finding new motivation to continue helping people.
  6. I loved how they did the fight here compared to the original comic. The choreography was a lot more elaborate with Bats rocking the Jiu jitsu against a younger and stronger opponent.
  7. I’m sure DeMarco has $1 billion in Rick and Morty money to buy it, although if DeMarco bought it it would probably be to mothball it.
  8. Funny thing is Year One and DKR are both based on Frank Miller’s best Batman work (everything afterwards has been awful to “Oh Dear God, you’re serious”). Year One is the prologue, DKR is considered by many to be the definitive Batman story. Both are worth it IMO.
  9. Code Geass 8-15. Netflix, if you want to make a live action adaptation of something and add sex to it, this would make a lot more sense than freaking ATLA (and yes I know the rumor was baseless, it’s still funny).
  10. https://meaww.com/kiss-anime-kiss-manga-taken-down-by-japan-leech-piracy-law-parliament-manga-anime-copyright-websites You can’t kill piracy outright, but the internet is for all intents and purposes, furious.
  11. The internet thought it was, but upon review it wasn’t for the WHY. They are gone, and that was confirmed. Title will be updated.
  12. Edit - While they are gone, the reasons are unknown at this time.
  13. Even with cable declining, we’re still years off from channels being folded. The CN Name, if nothing else, has value as a brand.
  14. Where the hell would it move? Warner trying to unload Crunchyroll makes it perfectly clear they don’t need or want an anime streaming service, so that’s right out, not to mention DeMarco hates streaming because he misses being the sole tastemaker for the industry. As for the block’s future, it is what it is. And what it is is well, a block with a limited budget, a limited amount of shows, and no real way to expand that. So at this point, you should enjoy the time you have with the block, because there’s nowhere left for it to go.
  15. https://variety.com/2020/digital/news/warnermedia-selling-crunchyroll-anime-sony-1234733441/ Warner wants CR gone ASAP to pair down their debt. As for those Toonami originals, if they are primarily Crunchyroll productions, and the service is sold to let’s say, Amazon, odds are good that the shows never see Toonami, which would put DeMarco up shit creek without a paddle.
  16. https://variety.com/2020/digital/news/warnermedia-selling-crunchyroll-anime-sony-1234733441/ Warner is not playing. They want all non-essential assets GONE and have courted multiple buyers for Crunchyroll with a $1 billion asking price. Potential buyers have not been listed, but I would be unsurprised if Amazon or NBC Universal was looking into buying the service to boost their own streaming offerings.
  17. However, Sony turned it down as too expensive. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2020-08-12/report-at-t-offers-crunchyroll-to-sony-for-usd1.5-billion/.162867 Warner is still in a selling mood as they’re doing anything and everything to pair down their ginormous debt (see the mass bloodbath over at DC Comics and all but shutting down DC Universe streaming) so who, besides Sony, do you think would be interested in buying?
  18. https://www.theinformation.com/articles/at-t-wants-1-5-billion-in-crunchyroll-sale-to-sony Next on the chopping block - Crunchyroll apparently. AT&T is apparently in the middle of negotiations to Sony with a $1.5 billion asking price.
  19. For the most part Adult Swim has been fairly easily integrated into the HBO Max streaming service. It has its own section, several Adult Swim bound shows were placed on HBO Max first and foremost (most notably Close Enough, which even though it looks like ass, is still an original property for them) but I have no idea about the people in charge. DeMarco’s hatred of streaming is a running gag on this board, but Toonami is the single part of the Adult Swim apparatus with the most disconnect between it and the HBO Max end goal. Sacking executives who still miss Blockbuster is, while far from a guarantee, not outside of the realm of possibility.
  20. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/fresh-prince-bel-air-drama-reboot-works-1306799 In other news, 2020 continues to suck.
  21. TNT executives were among the first announced layoffs. Particularly notable was Kevin Riley, who greenlit All Elite Wrestling. https://www.sportskeeda.com/wwe/news-tnt-executive-supported-greenlit-aew-released-possible-serious-consequences-wrestling-promotion
  22. Sports are back, and even in limited quantities people are hungry for them. Scripted programming, especially programming available elsewhere, won’t cut it. At least Batman is somewhat fresh.
  23. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2020-08-10/shueisha-cancels-publication-of-act-age-manga/.162773 Shounen Jump appears to be cracking down, but it helps when you have people chomping at the bit for your spot.
  24. https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2020/08/att-layoffs-continue-with-600-job-cuts-at-warner-bros-and-hbo/ Put bluntly, no division is safe, no channel is safe, expect massive consolidation and firing of asses at the networks as everyone scrambles for a place in the HBO Max hierarchy. Particularly, if Toonami gets to remain an independent entity or becomes a Crunchyroll subsidiary will become clear in a few weeks as the smoke clears from the firings.
