  1. I think we all resigned ourself to this inevitability once the Crunchyroll sale to Sony was made official and Sony decided they wanted all the anime for themselves and didn't want to bother with that late-nite block. Not to mention Warner is a mess right now, with animation being cut because that's where Zaslav thinks the cuts will be easiest (and clearly needing the money since they're facing a class action lawsuit for cooking the books prior to the buyout). And it sucks because of all the Crunchyroll Originals, Shenmue was the best one, and probably the only one to be a success outside of Tower of God. But given Shenmue's own history, it's kind of fitting legal bullshit keeps the story from continuing. It SUCKS, but no one can say this came out of nowhere. That being said, if Sega announces in November a Yakuza anime with a celebrity VA as Kiryu, we'll probably be able to hear the screams from Atlanta.
  2. Capcom adaptations are hit and miss but that’s a lot of talent.
  3. Elvis - 8/10. Runs too long and some beats are predictable, but Austin Butler needs to win Best Actor. His performance as the King is transcendent. The “If I can dream” scene is worth it alone.
  4. By Rogers' own admission, he had to make it a comedy at first although he didn't want to, because pitching a dramatic original cartoon when you're not Japanese will still have most executives look at you like you have smoking turds in your mouth.
  5. It's essentially the tax equivalent of an "at least you tried" award. Since a production requires hours, investment, and the employment of individuals, declaring it a failure allows the company to recoup some of the investment on the logic that the production did keep people employed and put money into the economy. Therefore, the company and its investors will not be so hesitant to do it again fearing a flop because there is some incentive to at least try.
  6. On the one hand, it is definitely an example of the “I’m making this as a form of self therapy” genre that seems to have defined Western animation the last 6-8 years or so. On the other hand, Zaslav’s merciless almost suggests a personal beef with Western animation. Obviously that isn’t the case but still.
  7. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2022-09-24/hidive-to-stream-new-urusei-yatsura-anime/.190131 The show will be simulcast…on HiDIVE.
  8. Zaslav continues his war on animation, but Toonami is thankfully unaffected.
  9. I think the LA movies were enough, since they’re genuinely good samurai films and probably the best LA adaptations of a manga around (I’m hesitant to count Edge of Tomorrow because they changed so much, even if it is a great film).
  10. The cold hit and I broke out the jacket. One day you're by a pool, the next, you're sipping pumpkin spice coffee.
  11. Cyberpunk Edgerunners 10 Bastard!! 16.
  12. Plantasm will be debuting at New York Comic Con on Thursday, October 6.
  13. The ad says Prime Video, but that’s probably for just Japan. Here it’s probably HIDIVE bound.
  14. Cyberpunk Edgerunners 8-9.
  15. Crunchyroll has it, fresh off of their latest anti-union fuckery.
  16. Some research shows Netflix has been using exclusively union actors for anime dubs since 2019, which both explains Gus in Cyberpunk and makes me feel a bit better about them vs this anti-worker practice. Just a bit.
  17. It worked when Hulu didn’t want to rehire John DiMaggio for Bender.
  18. We’re better off for it.
  19. Yeah, based in Texas, because why share the hundreds of millions from your niche blowing up like it has?
