  1. I watched the Welcome to Eltingville pilot. Knowing that Evan Dorkin, the creator of the comic eventually stopped writing it out of sheer disgust with the fandom he was mocking and satirizing makes me wonder how different the world would be if it was picked up. It cannot be understated that the pilot only scratches the surface of the sheer utter contempt Dorkin has for geek culture as it existed in the 90s before Netflix, before tabletop role play became the purview of live-streaming voice actors and Hollywood writers, and before Marvel made all the money.
  2. Is it too much to hope Yu Yu Hakusho gets a similar reception? I’m standing my prediction that once the strike is over Lionsgate will fast track Naruto for release, and Amazon will probably do the same with Voltron and Hellsing. I’m also still relieved that the SNL One Piece skit can’t be a thing, because you bet if the late night shows were running right now, everyone from Kimmel to Oliver would be making cracks about that dumbass stretchy kid that wants to be a pirate.
  3. Finished the first season. And now I need the strike to end so I can have more.
  4. I think the entire internet has agreed to this. Get her an audience with Oda.
  5. For better or for worse, when this strike is over, every single anime IP major studios own is probably on the fast track for production. Also I want a season 2. I want a live action Nico Robin dammit.
  6. My concern about One Piece is twofold. First, the cost is definitely going to go up now that the Hollywood chatter is Netflix may have their next friggin Stranger Things. You had a show that while somewhat popular in the United States, but was definitely the least popular of the big anime domestically now being seen as the next IT show. The price for the adjacent material, namely the anime, WILL go up, and Toonami got rid of One Piece before when the price was not to their liking. The second fear is executive meddling. Will higher ups want to keep around a show that advertises their competition? It’s one thing with the anime, that’s a niche, but now it’s a case of “As seen on Netflix! You like Netflix, right kids? You could be here and watch MAWS or you could go to Netflix for Lincoln Lawyer, Suits, and My Happy Marriage!” Not sure if Zaslav will be down with that.
  7. Well the pacing is certainly more brisk, and in the translation from cartoon to live action, there’s a lot of subtle adjustments to personalities. I dare say someone who might have found toon Luffy a bit too much would appreciate the tweaks.
  8. Well, I tried it, and it worked for me. Dammit, my one friend (who’s no longer with us) loved VB. He even got the shirts direct ordered during that last season, like the Blue Morpho shirt. He would have loved this.
  9. I don’t think reviewers from The New Yorker or USA Today are that focused on manga accuracy.
  10. It’s official - Of all the anime to get a big budget adaptation and be GOOD, One Piece is the last one I would have chosen. I thought this was a joke when it was first announced. Now we have the Hollywood Reporter and USA Today declaring it the next Stranger Things. This also for better or for worse makes me wonder if the anime will keep airing on Toonami.
  11. Toonami is sort of indicative of the marketplace, and right now the marketplace is “we’re streaming all this”. The shows we are getting are shows with contracts from before the buyout and leftover kids stuff that they didn’t want to interrupt their regular schedule for. Also, I am seriously wondering if One Piece is going to be sticking around much longer.
  12. Just keep kicking him till the engine starts I guess.
  13. It bears repeating that the few negative reviews are people mad that it’s too faithful to the original.
  14. Well, we're here for the season finale of the most controversial portrayal of the Man of Steel since Zack Snyder put Henry Cavill in his live-action adaptation of Birdy The Mighty Decode. (Snyder has admitted this). What cliffhanger will half of the 20 episode order leave us with?
  15. That's the thing at the end of the day. The anime that's popular is serialized. But as much as DeMarco despises it, the magic of streaming would make airing anime mere advertising for the streamers. That's why it doesn't work to air it outside of that Toonami quarantine zone. What's the point of directing people to Crunchyroll or Netflix? Although given how the reviews have been, Netflix may have genuinely turned One Piece into their next big hit. We'll see how the ratings pan out, but things are about to get VERY interesting on that end.

I didn’t know you were legally liable for that.
  17. Right now it has a 76% critic score and a 96% audience score, when usually it’s the other way around. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/one_piece_2023/s01 Edit - 83% Critic score.
  18. Meanwhile Mitch had software issues again -
  19. Final trailer - And they made the cover of Variety, in an article where Steven Maeda admits live action Bebop sucked. https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/one-piece-live-action-tv-show-netflix-manga-bet-1235703851/
  20. Looks like this is getting a full blown release instead of a limited one. https://deadline.com/2023/08/killers-of-the-flower-moon-release-date-theaters-1235530528/amp/ I dunno, I think I’d prefer the ability to take bathroom breaks on my own time. (God I miss my laser projector. Second I get some space I’m buying a new one).

  22. Viewing habits of serial vs episodic television. If you watch King of the Hill, you’re not in a rush to see the next one. If you watch Naruto and want to see what happens next, you could wait, or you could find the whole damn thing on Crunchyroll and watch it at your pace.
  23. I’m pretty sure at this point the people in charge (not necessarily Zaslav himself but other higher ups) just view airing anime as advertising streaming services that aren’t Max. So why keep that going?
  24. Baki Hanma S2 18 Persona 4 The Golden Animation 1. I just beat the game, but I guess I’m not done with this cast of characters yet.
