    I'm not sure that's it though. Other anime have characters that have pointy chins and they don't look weird. I think it's the odd shape of the entire head.

    Sadly this tends to be a common Japanese anime writing trait. No matter how weird the original work is, they feel the need to constantly one up themselves to the point of complete incomprehensible insanity. For example, AOT and their mass amnesia wizard king.
