The Doubled Up One Piece Situation
Toonamiguy321 replied to CountFrylock's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Every potential deal from CR going forward should be considered stand alone. They may be able to work some magic on MHA while at the same time CR tightens up the door on Toei content. As I mentioned when MHA was confirmed for a short rerun, landing S6 is certainly something to be excited about, however it’s not a confirmation that Toonami can freely access CR shows again. I think the best way to put it is every CR show we manage to get on the block should be considered a small miracle. Can another happen? Maybe. Is it guaranteed? Not at all. Sketch has a good point too. Dressrosa is a major commitment, even at 2 episodes a week. And even hardcore fans of the series had their tolerance tested during that arc. If it was up to Demarco, it would stay. If others higher up need to be convinced, they may opt to end the series run on a positive note at the end of Punk Hazard. OP has done better at retaining viewership than it’s 2013-2017 run, but it also has not done anything spectacular to justify renewal for such a long arc that is certain to suffer from viewer decay. -
The Doubled Up One Piece Situation

If we apply Demarco’s words on this matter from the past, every single episode they air costs them money. The reason One Piece stayed at one episode it’s entire run up to its cancellation was that a second episode was a similar cost to an entirely separate show. If that’s still the case in 2022, OP has been burning 2x money the entire year. As annoying as that is to non OP fans, there’s no argument that content access has been very difficult this year, it’s not like the good times of 2019 where the block was overflowing with shows and needed every slot available to it. I think there are a few possibilities for why they are making the change now. 1. Crunchyroll has sealed up the loophole Toonami used at the start of the year, and the block now has a finite amount of episode left before it’s removed from the schedule again. No telling if that’s in X amount of weeks or the end of this arc, but Demarco is fearing the bottomless well may have a bottom. 2. Toei has either raised the price due to perceived success of Film Red, or Toei simply no longer cares to keep the show on the block. As with above, that pushes them to conserve the episodes they do have. 3. Zaslav has decreed that Toonami needs to lower their expenses, and cutting an OP episode was the easiest way to do that without actually getting rid of anything entirely. Whatever the case may be, I have my doubts the Two Piece combo is coming back anytime soon. I find it very suspect that Toonami chose to shroud the cut hour and cut OP episode under the DST schedule so they wouldn’t have to speak a word about the change. -
I’m in the exact same boat. Without a doubt in my mind when Bleach was announced and I was thinking about the dub, Urahara being recast in the original because he died came to mind. Bleach is tricky when it comes to a modern dub. It has an enormous cast, and it was dubbed in a time when lots of VAs kind of just evaporated after a few roles. Then you have others like Laura Bailey who took huge strides in their career and may just not be available. I believe the further away we get from the main cast, the less Viz is going to feel it’s necessary to get the original VA for a character, especially if they have an insignificant role in the new season. I’m sure Viz will at least try to get the original, but if they are bigshots or moved to a new career and aren’t interested, then they are just going to move to someone new. Ichigo, Rukia, Renji, Yoruichi, and Orihime are some of the most prominent and most likely for people to notice a change, and all of those seem locked down by their originals.

Yikes…. those ratings are GREAT. 2 (presumably 3 with MHA) over 200k? When is the last time that has happened? Why the yikes? Because once again there is irrefutable proof that the core issue with the ratings the past month was Demarco’s original. They put so much stock into the original projects and time and time again they fail the block. And it’s not like this was stiff competition, it was a rerun of MHA in the middle of an arc, and we are looking at at minimum 60k more viewers than 3/4 of HCC. Looking further down the night, it’s interesting how moving Yashahime down completely resolved it’s major retention issue. Not sure if it’s the time or if MiA is just a better match for it.

He got in a pay dispute over his work and walked when they would not meet his demands. Not sure how much impact that had on the dub since this was long before tight simuldub windows, but im sure it gave Viz some issues. And being honest, that tweet of his comes off very passive aggressive. Like he knows Viz won’t contact him so he is acting like he has a jam packed schedule they need to work around for him to grace their presence. Im gonna hedge my bet that he likely will not return. I do agree about Seitz, no hate to him, but he really was not the man for the job in this case. Wendee Lee is obviously signaling she wants to remain in the role. I hope she resists any social media bullying that tries to get her to give it up. What happened with Todd? I’m so used to hearing him tell me to put those motes in the bank that I just assumed he didn’t have an current issues.

We lost an hour of premier content just to get MiA S2, so I’d have to guess whatever price tag was on the movie, which they can only air a single time without killing ratings, just wasn’t seen as worth it. As for why canon content is in a movie, not every series is created equal. Sometimes you don’t know if a S2 is ever going to get the greenlight, so if you get a pass to take a step forward with the canon material, it’s foolish not to take it, even if it may cause problems down the road. A movie format also opens the door to having to do less internal censorship. The TV anime already cuts out/covers up a lot of nudity from the manga, and I do believe some of the gore was tamed down for the TV anime as well.

Debt essentially is Monopoly money. The US has like 30 trillion in debt, it’s meaningless, it’s just numbers on a board. It’s never going to go down. As long as WBD can still make periodic payments to those they have debt towards, it will never matter. Unlike the US though, WBD could hypothetically knock out their debt and get back in the black. It will take many years of strategic spending and successful content, but it’s not entirely impossible. Once the stock price starts to rebound (and it will), that will put a dent in some of the problem

I can tolerate Chad having a different voice, because he really never got to say that much anyway. But I’m gonna be majorly pissed if this evolves from a single VAs personal choice to the entire cast feeling pressured to dump their roles if they don’t have the right skin tone. Anyone else but Wendee Lee as Yoruichi is unacceptable. If you want to take this stance, be willing to make an exception for a legacy role. People want to hear as many of the correct voices as possible. Slightly related, I wonder if David Lodge will reprise Kenpachi. He said he was willing to, so it falls on Viz willingness to forgive him for his sloppy dispute back in the day.

I don’t think anyone is surprised, just disappointed we had to waste a slot on this for 24 weeks. S1 had similar retention issues. Toonami has always had a bad habit of “we started it so we gotta air every season no matter what” rather than basing future season pickups on ratings. On the topic of ratings, should we assume going forward that rerun numbers are now just entirely inaccessible? MiA numbers disappeared at the start of the month and SBD somewhat acknowledged they aren’t getting them. Not a huge deal for the end of the night shows, but it was nice to get a feel how marathon nights did. Plus, we may not get the lead slot numbers for November at this rate which are a bit more important for the context of the rest of the night.

Golden age of content isn’t over, yet Adult Swim doesn’t have a damn thing announced to fill in all the gaps from the shows cancelled this year. Maybe AS just isn’t part of that golden age? The results of this in a few years will be interesting. There are only 2 possible outcomes. Either Zaslav ends up looking like a hero who made countless tough choices to save the business, this will cement his legacy as a master businessman, or everything continues to crash to an irreparable state and Zaslav will be seen as pure toxin to put in charge of anything.

Got accused of being a groomer cause of some weird sketch she did in the past. Interestingly, the accusers completely dropped their case after a few weeks. But it just goes to show how destructive a claim like that can be, I heard a ton about the allegation when it broke, I heard zero about it being dropped. Personally I think T&B was doomed regardless, so I doubt this ended up being much, if any factor in the choice to cancel the show.
-
Even before the controversy, I had a feeling this was going to happen. It seems like this year every new season that airs of a show is followed by an announcement it was cancelled a few months later. The only safe one is Rick and Morty. What is even going to be left of AS for next year? The way things are going it feels like there will be months long gaps between single new shows.

This time around hasn’t been performing that bad surprisingly. Either the upgraded pace or the simple fact the block has been airing stuff the fans like even less, it hasn’t been like pre 2017 where almost every night it was the clear problem show. With that in mind and the fact content is hard to come by anyway, I can’t see a reason they would want to drop it again. Toei was the one desperate to have it on the air, so I don’t see why they would pull out either. Unless they don’t believe 150k or so viewers per week is good enough exposure to keep the deal going.
-
Problem is, most of them don’t. Toei and TMS are prime examples of leadership that is stuck way in the past. Toei in particular has always been desperate to make One Piece popular in the west, going back as far as dumping it on 4kids without a second thought. Most other studios aren’t even thinking about what a series does outside of Japan, let alone how it performs in the middle of the night on a Saturday. The One Piece news is the most unusual thing about this new schedule. It has been on 2x speed for almost the entire year, maybe that wasn’t the actual plan and they are running dry on episodes? If so, I’d hope in the new year they replenish their episode pool and drop the rerun to get it back to 2x. Because Dressrosa at 1 episode a week could be listed as a war crime.
-
I really doubt they would start the MHA rerun 23 episodes deep if they didn’t have SOMETHING like 90% certain that they could park in the midnight slot next month. Going back to MHA at all is a strong pointer towards S6, but there’s also no telling how deep the CR funny business goes and it’s just there to keep the spot warm for Bleach. We will find out in the coming weeks what’s going on there, but it’s obvious set up for something. We have no need to think about schedule filler anymore considering they chopped off the rerun portion. If they would have stuck with 2x One Piece, we may have seen a block that is straight premiers in December. I do agree they need to be more open to less popular shows, especially going into next year. Even if they pull off MHA, that won’t mean they can pull that off with every popular show they have aired in the past. They need to patch up some of the gaps with B tier shows from Sentai.
-
To me, it seems like the prices would be fairly equivalent. Bleach is high because it’s the biggest deal of 2022, and MHA is high because Crunchyroll are dicks. Either way they go, the wallet will hurt. But, that shouldn’t be a huge deal since we are quickly approaching the January reset. Of course, that assumes Zaslav sees fit to give the block any budget next year. The problem with rights is very rarely are broadcast rights a separate deal in this day and age. And even if they were, Toonami needs the stream rights anyway. The block could probably do a lot more if it was only dealing with broadcast rights, but that would mean our only audience would be cable viewers, and we have seen the trend those numbers have been taking, both on Toonami itself and cable in general.
-
That’s exactly what I was thinking. In my eyes, Bleach still has a better chance than S6. The elephant in the room is obviously, why rerun MHA then? And I’d say two reasons, one they have a habit of parking a show in its intended slot and never moving it, so MiA S2 is not meant to leave 12:30. Secondly, the only real option for a lead otherwise is Yashahime, and we have all seen the ratings that has been pulling. At the end of the day, MHA S6 or Bleach doesn’t matter, either would be a slam dunk pickup for the block.

https://twitter.com/swimpedia/status/1585840501546438656?cxt=HHwWgMDS0ZbihIIsAAAA Check this out, looks like MHA is NOT starting at the first episode of the season, but rather episode 23. That changes everything. I don’t want to raise the S6 flag just yet, but this is clearly not meant to be permanent. Which begs the question, why didn’t Demarco clearly articulate this to the fans yesterday? Why didn’t the Facebook post clearly state it’s a late season episode? Two simple changes could have completely flipped the reactions to yesterday’s schedule drop. But they instead opted for vagueness which forced everyone to assume the worst. Also, if it holds into the following week, looks like Jack and Black Dynamite will be the show taking over the 3am slot. Outside of the block so they don’t have to spend money on bumpers id assume.

Let’s trim it up to premiers. I also believe you forgot AoT 1. Assassination Classroom S2 2. Made in Abyss S1 3. One Piece 4. Attack on Titan 5. Shenmue 6. Lupin the Third Part 6 7. Housing Complex C 8. Yashahime S2 9. Made in Abyss S2 10. Naruto Shippuden 10 and a half. Half of Black Lotus So for the entire year, 10 1/2 new shows. One which has been with us since 2014, and one that was only 4 total episodes. Not quite as devoid of content as it feels like, but this year still is going down is very underwhelming. But at this time next year, we will probably look back and say “wow 10 and a half new shows! We were spoiled!”

It has not. The bill quickly passed senate, then got stalled in the house. It’s not dead though, and I believe they have till spring to make a choice on it. Once the elections wrap up they may get to it. At least I hope they do, no more DST is a dream for me. I think the intended cycle, even if it did pass, was next weeks DST would still happen. Then March springs forward and we never play with the clocks again after that. The wording for which one stays and which goes never made sense to me, but whichever time is the one where it’s night at 5pm is the one meant to go away I believe.

That doesn’t make sense. Unless the deal is going to take over 6 months, if a deal was close, they would have chosen a more temporary option like a double up or a briefer rerun. People held this same optimistic opinion when we got the Super rerun at midnight, and that ended up staying the lead show for almost its entire rerun.
