using gofundme for animal shelters - tired or wired?
wacky1980 replied to wacky1980's topic in Free-For-All
thank you for your knowledge. it sounds like we can probably make this work! if i can get enough people interested to support it, i'll probably be in charge of putting something together...unless someone else wants it, which would be fine with me. i still need to get a few of the right people on board before i start getting shelters' permissions. and hopefully if everyone comes together, the momentum won't be spent by then. -
you said you were leaving after your self-promo post in the "banned" thread...?

using gofundme for animal shelters - tired or wired?
wacky1980 replied to wacky1980's topic in Free-For-All
i'm thinking, it has got to be pretty expensive to bring a few hundred animals up to speed on shots and getting them fixed...plus flea/worm/etc treatments, feeding, grooming, and housing. the shelters would eventually recoup some/all of those costs if they can find enough folks to adopt, but that might take awhile. if we could toss maybe $20k at them, that's like $50 per animal...should take them pretty far through the process. -
using gofundme for animal shelters - tired or wired?

we're sending items to three different shelters so far, all of which have taken some animals from this bust. one is a humane society, one is a privately-funded no-kill, and i'm pretty sure the third is also private. the humane society one is the biggest question mark for accepting cash. the no-kill is one we've worked with on different fundraisers in the past, and i know they accept cash. unfortunately, all three shelters are 45+ minutes away. we're a drop point to make it easier for people in our town to contribute. -
so there was a bust over the weekend of a local pet breeder. they had ~300 cats and dogs removed from their properties, but i know they hid more in random remote areas around the county that have not been uncovered yet (they somehow got a tip from law enforcement before the raid), and from the rumors i'm hearing, the number of recovered animals could go as high as 500 before it's all said and done. the local animal shelters are all over-run with cats and dogs right now...many suffering from neglect, and pulled from horrible living conditions. we've started accepting donations of supplies and food at the bar, and have loaded up two trucks in two days to take around to the shelters. but lots of people are interested in donating cash, and i'm not too keen on the idea of handling potentially lots of untraceable cash for all the obvious reasons. so ... gofundme? i've never set up a donation thing online before, and i've yet to reach out to the local shelters to see if they're interested in the idea, or if they can even accept crowdsourced donations like that. so before i dive too deep into this rabbit hole, does anyone on here have experience with this sort of fundraising? is it a good idea, or are there better options out there?

fucking murphy's law. we applied for a state grant back in may. it required a FUCKING TON of paperwork, including 3 years of tax returns. i couldn't get my accountant to move our return filing up in order to meet the deadline on the grant, so i had to instead provide a P/L estimate. my best guess on that was a 2019 loss of about $3600 on paper. so pretty much break-even, which is where we'd like to be historically. we submitted the application -- in may, with a stated 30-day turnaround -- and waited. and waited. in the meantime, we finally got our taxes done in july, and quickly left that accountant behind. and as it turns out, we did turn a profit on paper. great, cool, whatever, passthru corp so we had to personally pay the taxes on the profit. no big deal, right? well i finally got a response on the grant this afternoon. we were denied...because we showed a loss in 2019, making us a risky investment for the grant program. so we got denied. denied because of my fucking stubborn loyalty to an accountant who was going thru some health issues and had fallen behind on her work, but had been our accountant for 10+ years prior to that. denied, because i chose to make as accurate of an attempt at a P/L statement as i could, without having the actual books in front of me. i could have easily make those numbers show a profit, but i wanted to be 100% honest. fucking denied, because some asshole bean counter over at the capitol decided a measly $3600 loss in a year when we took on $75k of new debt to expand the business, was overwhelming proof that we were a risky investment. fuck this game. if playing fair doesn't count for shit, i'm done doing it.

our first official haunted hop garden is postponed til next year. i was actually kinda excited about that project too we're assuming trick-or-treating will be cancelled. regardless, wife and boys have been up my ass about decorating and getting ready for halloween for almost a month already. they went to spirit halloween today and got some decorations and costumes. i think each of them plans on having a few costumes to burn thru. and apparently we're doing a family-only halloween party in our house, with each room getting its own halloween theme decor. ugh. i'm just ready to hibernate until this bullshit is all over. -
y'all missed the patron shots. sorry about that.
