I now work at a museum. Random ecks dee

Everyone is saying a horrible recession is coming soon but I had no trouble getting multiple call backs right away and I only put in several applications. Granted these were all low-paying <$20/hour jobs, maybe for realer and/or faker jobs it's different.

I did see this unsubstantiated graphic though that had a list of states that are supposedly already in (a?) recession & mine wasn't on it so maybe it's different in some places, but AFAICT there's still plenty of openings out there for anyone looking to change things up.

I even signed up to deliver DoorDash for fun but haven't done it yet. They claim the average driver here makes $22 an hour which sounds unbelievable but might try it out and report back.

Any recession indicators where you guys are, or anything weird going on with the economy or life in general, or are things more or less still Very Normal?

Man, when I found out he literally worked for a Democratic think tank so many things fell into place for me. Just like when I found out Ginguy was a political consultant. And don't get me started on v*rpetas.

This place has served as quite the clarifying microcosm.

Never figured you to be the museum type. Maybe it's just another gig for you anyway. I've always wondered what it would be like to work at a museum. Is it boring?

It's pretty boring yeah but there's more going on than I thought. Groups of people use it as a place to gather for big meetings and events and stuff, so it's not just like families & field trips.

I thought he was reading shit actively (super passionate about the boards) and it was a dig at me for something unrelated. Idk. We had one civil chat 2 years ago when he was out the door and I missed everything on the Nab Wars, but he’s your pal.

I haven't done doordash in over 3 years. The pay seems horrible these days. Not joking, in 2020 there were hours where I made 50 dollars, and the average was over 25 per hour. It's never gonna be that good again. Inflation wasn't horrible yet either. I heard these days you can be sitting for hours and only make 20 dollars.

My friend who delivers occasionally says he does alright but it's highly tip dependent and he gets fucked over on some orders. I asked if that DoorDash claim of $20+ an hour could possibly be true and he said that sounds about right, so idk. Maybe tomorrow.....

iirc new drivers have a honeymoon period of 3 months where they are given priority for higher paying orders, so perhaps it may be worth it for you in the short term.

I actually work at two museums that are next door to each other. There's a bunch of museums all clustered together, it's kinda weird. I really like it, they're like those big college campus student union buildings but nicer & even more cavernous.

Still haven't done DoorDash, now idk if I ever will. Too busy. Nice getting a paycheck again, things were looking very dire there for a moment (entirely due to my own laziness & unwillingness to contribute anything to the evil American economy)

Out of the 30+ jobs I've applied to so far, one was at a museum in D.C., where my wife and I moved to. Like all the other job listings, they ghosted me. Been so frustrating trying to find a new job since Rite Aid went out of business. My store's last day was in June. Does nobody want to hire an ex-pharmacy tech? And it's not just pharmacy jobs I've applied to. Receptionist jobs, a paraprofessional gig at a special needs school, even a bookstore. They all ghosted me. And on top of that, everywhere I ever worked has closed. I often joke to my wife that I should get some low-level government job just so it closes.

Jesus I'm so sorry. From your experience it sounds like maybe the jobs really are drying up out there. I applied to 6 or 7 jobs on indeed and only 3 got back to me at all, one of which was a full week later. Where do you typically apply for jobs? Indeed, another website, individual corporate sites, in person (lol)?

I have no idea what living in DC is like but my advice would be getting into service industry stuff that serves all the rich fake job-having people there. Maybe look for openings in restaurants or grocery/retail stores or bakeries or catering companies or janitorial services, low level things like that. Might sound grim starting from the bottom of a different industry than pharmacy tech but it could be a lifeline until you find something better. If you have some extra money it might be worth it to get an alcohol server license or ServSafe certification, something like that to put on your resume might get you in the door despite your lack of experience in these industries.

I didn't even know Rite Aid went under that's crazy. The CVS & Walgreens near me are seemingly always hiring pharmacy workers. My friend back home is a manager at a pharmacy and he says they're always short on workers and the young 20somethings they do hire all come in reeking of weed and can't do basic math, two big-time no no's for pharmacy techs.

I wish I had some better advice. :LithiumSmileySad: Good luck out there and feel free to keep us posted with how the job hunt goes!

I used to work in restaurants. I didn't leave that scene so I could go back to it! And the second Rite Aid store I worked at was so low-volume (it was in a small town in DE) that the pharmacy hours were 9 to 6 on weekdays and closed on weekends. My wife works in a special needs school as an OT and works similar hours. Good luck getting that kind of work-life balance in a restaurant! I worked at three restaurants back in Delaware and they all closed after I left, while Rite Aid and a bookstore that I worked in long before that both closed while I was still there. Between when that bookstore closed in 2008 and my starting at Rite Aid in January 2022, I tried off and on to get out of the restaurant business. But for the longest time, nobody wanted to hire me. It's like they looked at my work history and said, "Oh, you worked most of your life in restaurants? FUCK YOU! STAY THERE!" They might as well have shoved their middle fingers right in my face! It made me feel like I wasn't allowed to do anything else. And eventually, you begin to believe it. Rite Aid was a lucky break for me, since they needed all the help they could get during COVID. By the time I started there, the vaccines were already available to ages 12 and up for several months. And it was also the first job I ever held where everybody there only knew me as my true self, not someone masquerading as some guy-looking person.

Since you asked, I've mainly been looking on Indeed.

Corporate announced a second bankruptcy (they went bankrupt before in 2023 because of opioid lawsuits) on Cinco de Mayo/Revenge of the Fifth. I already saw it coming by that point. Probably all of us Rite Aid people did. And toward the end, my boss had fucked off back to Thailand and retired. I still have her contact info, though, so she can give me a reference if needed. Ditto the other pharmacists and front-end staff I worked with.

Funny thing about the weed part: Rite Aid stopped testing for weed during COVID. And we had two techs who would work stoned AND still be effective at their jobs. And this was in Delaware, where recreational bud has been legal for two years now. It was only this past August that they actually started recreational adult use sales, though. Meanwhile, it's been legal in D.C. and Maryland for several years now. Virginia, too, for the last two years, though they're still pussyfooting around with starting recreational sales. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised how many others among us rank-and-file staff were stoned on duty toward the end.

@Real_AirCooledGirl I didn't know you had a wife now. Congrats.

She and I met at a Halloween party four years ago. I went as a hippie that night. She was Spidergirl. She moved around due to her work as a traveling occupational therapist at the time (her current school has since directly hired her), while I was a blue-haired, tatted-up woman behind the counter at a pharmacy in a small town in Slower Lower DE. The whole time wifey was moving around, we kept in touch. We reconnected after she moved back east two years ago. And we began dating last year. We did a courthouse wedding right after 4/20, then had a big ceremony with friends and family in June.
