Aurora Borealis

Recommended Posts

Saw it once as a little kid, maybe 5 yrs old, riding home from my grandparent's house.  I asked my grandfather why the sky looked like it was raining, but there were no clouds & no water.  Being a science teacher, he knew why.  Since then, it's always been cloudy or too light polluted to see when they've occurred.

Well, that’s partially why I had to go to an 8,911 ft summit to see it.  You can see the light pollution from downtown Reno at the bottom.  Luckily, there weren’t any clouds at 10pm; there were passing over Lake Tahoe earlier in the day.

I imagine a lot of people in the main band that cut across the country didn’t get to see it because of light pollution.  We were at least 4-500 miles away from the edges it’s band, which is why a time lapse was needed to catch anything.

Man, had I remembered I would have driven out to Black Mesa for this

As it stands I got some light polluted shots tonight that are most likely just the walmart parking lot reflecting off the clouds

However

^Someone snapped these in the Panhandle last night (near black mesa)

That’s some good stuff.  Seeing it in daylight is an all new look.

.....

Those were taken around 1 am'ish?

It's the night setting on my phone's camera, it uses a longer exposure to capture as much of the surrounding light as possible (I think)

Oh, gotcha.  Nonetheless, it looks pretty impressive.

I almost wish I had taken my DSLR and tripod with me, but I’m not sure it would have been much better.
