SwimModSponges Posted October 14, 2022 Posted October 14, 2022 Population. 90% off population. In 2 years. We're a billion crabs short. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/fishing-alaska-snow-crab-season-canceled-investigation-climate-change/ Love how they're investigating, like "gee, where are all the crabs hiding? Maybe under there?" 1 Quote
Jman Posted October 14, 2022 Posted October 14, 2022 All you can do is not fish and allow the population to recover. Fucking climate change. 1 Quote

NewBluntsworth Posted October 14, 2022 Posted October 14, 2022 (edited) All populations are crashing. It's the industrial capitalist extraction system that is causing the global biodiversity loss we are seeing across all ecosystems, it is this that will beat climate change in taking out most species. Crabs and those types are especially hard hit by ocean acidification which is well under way, many species can't form their shells in a sea of hot acid. While the usual suspects of mass overfishing is one good guess, it's also quite possible the crabs didn't "go" anywhere, they simply can't grow and exist any longer in these conditions. Seight Posted October 15, 2022 Posted October 15, 2022 Wait, I thought everything was evolving into crabs, now we're running out of crabs? send tweet 2 Quote
katt_goddess Posted October 15, 2022 Posted October 15, 2022 Has anyone tried dipping a Kardashian into the water and giving a little shake? That might up the free-range crab population slightly. 3 1 Quote

Gotta love those sea floor trawlers. Maximum extraction, leave nothing left. Quote
scoobdog Posted October 16, 2022 Posted October 16, 2022 Overfishing is regrettably the best case scenario. Climate change factors make it near impossible to regenerate wild populations. Quote
