tsar4
...and haven't received the email, be prepared. Apparently, there are a lot of people who received the DNA kit for Christmas & are currently bored, so they sent it in. I was notified I have "new" DNA connections, which I've been paging down the "new" list for the past 15 minutes. I think I'm related to half the world...so far. SwimModSponges
Congrats, now a corporation owns the rights to your DNA.
Vamped
When I did mine, the results came back on my birthday. I didnt opt for them to look for leaves or whatever I dont really want other people looking for me.
katt_goddess
Heh, boredom can be a helluva drug. And spitting in a vial is right up the laziest alleys for entertainment. I have steered clear of doing that for the same reason that sponge mentioned. I don't need some weird corporation claiming ownership of my mutated DNA when I'm the one that paid for the test in the first place.
Cau
The Mormons have been after my DNA for centuries, I won't let them have it now.

It took 2 moves & 10 years of ignoring their pleas for money before they stopped sending me stuff.
Distinct Lunatic
In my experience with DNA services like Ancestry it took about 2 years for the results to be refined to what I believe to be accurate (I got the initial results which were considerably different, it updated around a year after, and then the year after that to what I believe is mostly accurate), based on what I know about the surnames of all 4 grandparents of mine and the origins of those names, as well as getting connected to my mom's 1st cousin (my mom being adopted) her confirming things for me. PhilosipherStoned
I've messed around with it before, and it seems like it can be hard to trust. I think I did manage to find a few actual relatives, but it's been forever since I used it. They were sending out dna kits for free? That sounds crazy. PhilosipherStoned
I guess that's not bad for a dna test though.
HardcoreHunter
German part of my family I can only go back a few generations before I hit a wall. Still it's interesting that my Great Great grandfather made the Tetanus vaccine. Moms side most famous people on there are the Penn Family founders of Pennsylvania. Then my paternal grandmothers tree goes way back into sottish and english royalty, so something went wrong along the way.
PhilosipherStoned
My great grandfather on my mothers side had the first and middle name Grover Cleveland. According to my mother he was suppose to be full Cherokee. I found him on ancestry and what she said seems to check out. He worked in oil and married a white lady. My grandfather was born in Tahlequah Oklahoma. I think it might have even been on the reservation. I was able to find some records on my great grandmother through ancestry. They ended up with a lot of kids because she already had like 3 kids before they got together. It kind of got hard to verfiy passed them though, and I don't have any information on my fathers side since my mother divorced him when I was really young and they went seperate ways. If he was cherokee the Grover Clevland name makes sense. Grover Cleveland did a lot of work as president to repair relations with native americans including supporting the Dawes general allotment.. I mean supposingly it was suppose to be a lot better at aiding native americans, but it wasn't able to get enough votes until it got amended to allow left over land to be publically sold, and provided for native americans to basically be assimulated into the american lifestyle.. Due to all that it turned out to be pretty stupid. https://www.britannica.com/topic/Dawes-General-Allotment-Act
tsar4
After 2 hours of paging down, I give up. Too many 5-8th cousins. Saw some surnames of friends of mine showing up, doesn't mean it's the their family tree, but it was kinda cool.
PhilosipherStoned
I mean I actually still have my ancestry account it says my grandfather was born in Elk city Oklahoma.. I just said Tahlequah because my mother showed me a government ID from when my grandfather was a policeman that said the birth place was Tahlequah. I wouldn't be surprised if they were all white though so I've always thought the idea of a dna test would be interesting. It'd be awesome just to know whether my grandfather and gg where cherokee at all or just white since they had white names... I remember seeing their names along side the names of their wives on census reports searched through ancestry years ago that had them listed as white, but then I read something that said a lot of native american heads of household were listed as white on the censuses for years due to that being the policy.. PhilosipherStoned
Due to the expense and not trusting corporations and things like ancestry.com I've never actually done one though.
