after seeing several posts on here about dollar stores and realizing i hadn't been in one in a very long time, i decided to go to one and compare a few items i actually needed. some of it was food items and some weren't. most everything i found, save for one or two of the items, were cheaper at the walmart i normally go to. i guess wrapping paper or whatever is cheaper but i didn't see much that i couldn't find for a better price

Walmart is cheaper because they specifically price it to be cheaper, even if it's only a cent. It's all so they can brag about having the lowest prices. I used to work at Dollar General and most of our prices were whole dollar amounts ($1, $2, $5, etc), Walmart will price the same item at $0.98 in hopes of luring you in and having you buy something make up for the small percentage they're losing by selling items at low margins.

I haven't been in a Dollar store for almost 3 years. We have so many in our area placed closely by other stores that it just defeats the purpose of really going into one. I mean, you have Dollar General and Dollar store right in front of each other on one street. While, O'reilly's auto parts and Autozone are just a few steps away. O'reilly's right in a more convenient location. Save-a-Lot also sits right near the corner where these stores all coincide, so... what's the point? And shock me horrors, down the street there are two more Dollar stores!

Yeah, they all have different prices and stocks of items. But, if I need a can of Gunk Engine Degreaser and WD-40, which store am I more likely to go into?

Dollar General has a better variety of stationery, to me. Whenever I'd need to stock up on things for a semester, General Dollah is where my $30 would go. I could easily beat campus prices plus tax with Dollar General.

Dollar stores arent generally cheaper but you gotta know what u can and cant get from there

except for cards and wrapping paper it seems like too much effort for stuff to go to two different stores for when the walmart has pretty much everything around the same price. idk maybe i'm not their target audience

Dollar stores are the worst place to look for food items. Party supplies yes and ceramic kitchen wear if you hate plastic and you're prone to breaking things like I am these days.

hell i dont even shop at Walmart...it’s been about....3 years since I’ve been in one of those

I go to Walmart even though it's further from me than other grocery stores because it's usually 80-90 cents cheaper per item on average. Food is one of those things I try to be careful about because it has a tendency to blow out my monthly budget

I definitely don't buy meat at Walmart...Their meat is overpriced and generally bush league....I'm lucky there is a local butcher here....Unless it's a spur of the moment thing and the butcher is closed, I can't see buying meat out of there...Especially beef.

You're correct on meat. I do usually just buy from the local store for that. It's about the same price, except for chicken where the local store is way cheaper, but I don't like their quality on that. Most everything else is about the same

Except for balloons. Dollar store balloons are never worth it.

Damn things might as well be made of tissue paper with how fragile they are.

I just want to da a little side bar here and say I really kinda want to see what you actually do with balloons....I say this because I completely believe you.  Over the years I have just taken a rather cynical approach to the things people say here...

I never believed Raku was eating noodle, I don't believe Zeni is a pedo or stalker, I still can't subscribe to Bucket being as turdish as he puts on, and so forth....I don't even believe Pacman is as retarded as he exhibits despite proving me wrong constantly.....But you....I just know you are popping to you heart's content..

Anyway, back on topic....Walmart is the only place to get a Krispy Kreme around here....And even though it's not the same as getting one out of an actual KK, they are still better than our local shops.....Every shop here only ices once side of the donut...Where the fuck did this stupid practice originate.

I find Walmart quality is poor...I used to buy the meat there but...I switched to smaller grocery stores for that...and it’s a MASSIVE difference...Walmart meat tastes putrid...it’s not worth the few cents I’d save...

As for everything else, we buy in bulk from sams or Costco....we maybe stop in a grocery store once every couple of months to pick up stuff we don’t use as often

I just can never think of one thing I consume or use so much of to validate me joining Sams or Costco.  Maybe it's because of the kids and how their taste buds change every few months, but I went with my father in law a few times and I always wind up not finishing, or having to force finish anything I buy in that capacity.  Oh, except water.....Stocked up on 40 packs of water for pennies on the dollar.

Honestly, my balloony antics consist mostly of just lots of hugging and cuddling. Anything more explicit than that is a bit more rare. Also, popping is something I very much go out of my way to avoid most of the time.

Ah, yeah I could use an ample supply of TP and rice.....We used to go through eggs but now just my daughter eats them outside of a recipe.

Absolutely correct for that reason and also because it's much more cost efficient to buy a helium tank and balloons in bulk and then a few fancy ones tgthr...a dollar for each balloon? No way.

And now I'm wondering how many other people here have a balloon drawer 😶

Yeah I have Sam's to get like toilet paper or whatever but for food it's just too much since I'm by myself. I guess I could freeze stuff for months but I don't really like doing that. I do agree that the meat at Walmart is pretty terrible and I do avoid that

The noodle thing was a schtick. I admitted it several times. It was to make fun of two certain users. One doesn't have a job and lives in a basement

Wish my Walmart sold Krispy Kreme 😕

You can also skip out on the helium tank to save even more. After all, blowing them up yourself is like half the fun of having balloons in the first place.

And especially now that internet shopping is a thing, you can easily buy the bulk bags that balloon manufacturers sell to vendors. That's usually how I buy my balloons. Get a ton of balloons for about 65%-70% the normal cost.

Balloon drawer? Try a stack of 3 jumbo Rubbermaid balloon storage containers.

Well I was talking more for arrangements.  Which I also have a kit for non helium arrangements too.  No I know you likely don't use helium for your balloons 😆

Yeah thaswhat I mean, buy in bulk online ^_^

:P You have to have started somewhere tho, right?  I have an antique buffet table with a giantass drawer in it.  It's deep.  But it needs to be reorganized, as do most of my drawers.

It's pretty much the last thing. If you live in a town or city and Walmart is a reasonable distance from you.. it's worth it over your Dollar General/Family Dollar type store. But if you happen to live in a rural area or you don't have reliable transportation to make that big Walmart run then that's the only way to go. When I was working at DG my district open four stores in the time I was there and all of them were in small communities where it could take upwards of an hour to get to the closest Walmart. Obviously people who live in those areas go to Walmart for big shopping trips, but if you're on your way home from work and you need milk... DG is pretty much the only place to go in those areas now.

i guess. we have like a ton of different places to go around here. i guess i could see it in a rural area but they must be selling something to keep open around here with the amount of options we have

Again it comes to transportation for a lot of people. Our DG was like two blocks from two different low income apartment complexes and a trailer park. It was much easier for them to walk to us than to Walmart which is about another half mile away.
